They Were Us: Stories of Victims and ...

KShs2,500.00 KShs2,000.00
They Were Us is a documentary project that reveals the systemic causes of extrajudicial executions through the stories of those most impacted by Kenya’s informal policy of state-sanctioned violence in the name of safety. In these cases, police officers are simply an extension of security policies crafted by the political elite, policies that essentially make poverty itself a crime. Police might be the ones pulling the trigger, but popular narratives of security legitimize ‘shoot-to-kill’ policing. Instead of protecting fundamental human rights, policing is imagined as an urgent response to the need to “stabilize,” “control,” and “eliminate.” Benna Buluma, MVSN Convener, arranged interviews with other people who have lost loved ones from police brutality. Wyban Kanyi interviewed them, translated and edited their conversations. Photographs taken by Betty Press.

Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Therapist, Her Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed. One day, Lori Gottlieb is a therapist who helps patients in her Los Angeles practice. The next, a crisis causes her world to come crashing down. Enter Wendell, the quirky but seasoned therapist in whose office she suddenly lands. With his balding head, cardigan, and khakis, he seems to have come straight from Therapist Central Casting. Yet he will turn out to be anything but. As Gottlieb explores the inner chambers of her patients' lives -- a self-absorbed Hollywood producer, a young newlywed diagnosed with a terminal illness, a senior citizen threatening to end her life on her birthday if nothing gets better, and a twenty-something who can't stop hooking up with the wrong guys -- she finds that the questions they are struggling with are the very ones she is now bringing to Wendell. With startling wisdom and humor, Gottlieb invites us into her world as both clinician and patient, examining the truths and fictions we tell ourselves and others as we teeter on the tightrope between love and desire, meaning and mortality, guilt and redemption, terror and courage, hope and change. Maybe You Should Talk to Someone is revolutionary in its candor, offering a deeply personal yet universal tour of our hearts and minds and providing the rarest of gifts: a boldly revealing portrait of what it means to be human, and a disarmingly funny and illuminating account of our own mysterious lives and our power to transform them.

Anxious People by Fredrik Backman

Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree on anything, from where they want to live to how they met in the first place. Add to the mix an eighty-seven-year-old woman who has lived long enough not to be afraid of someone waving a gun in her face, a flustered but still-ready-to-make-a-deal real estate agent, and a mystery man who has locked himself in the apartment’s only bathroom, and you’ve got the worst group of hostages in the world. Each of them carries a lifetime of grievances, hurts, secrets, and passions that are ready to boil over. None of them is entirely who they appear to be. And all of them—the bank robber included—desperately crave some sort of rescue. As the authorities and the media surround the premises these reluctant allies will reveal surprising truths about themselves and set in motion a chain of events so unexpected that even they can hardly explain what happens next. Rich with Fredrik Backman’s “pitch-perfect dialogue and an unparalleled understanding of human nature” (Shelf Awareness), Anxious People is an ingeniously constructed story about the enduring power of friendship, forgiveness, and hope—the things that save us, even in the most anxious times.

Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari

Brief Summary Yuval Noah Harari, author of the critically-acclaimed New York Times bestseller and international phenomenon Sapiens, returns with an equally original, compelling, and provocative book, turning his focus toward humanity’s future, and our quest to upgrade humans into gods. Over the past century humankind has managed to do the impossible and rein in famine, plague, and war. This may seem hard to accept, but, as Harari explains in his trademark style—thorough, yet riveting—famine, plague and war have been transformed from incomprehensible and uncontrollable forces of nature into manageable challenges. For the first time ever, more people die from eating too much than from eating too little; more people die from old age than from infectious diseases; and more people commit suicide than are killed by soldiers, terrorists and criminals put together. The average American is a thousand times more likely to die from binging at McDonalds than from being blown up by Al Qaeda. What then will replace famine, plague, and war at the top of the human agenda? As the self-made gods of planet earth, what destinies will we set ourselves, and which quests will we undertake? Homo Deus explores the projects, dreams and nightmares that will shape the twenty-first century—from overcoming death to creating artificial life. It asks the fundamental questions: Where do we go from here? And how will we protect this fragile world from our own destructive powers? This is the next stage of evolution. This is Homo Deus. With the same insight and clarity that made Sapiens an international hit and a New York Times bestseller, Harari maps out our future. " " ISBN:9780062464316 Author:Yuval Noah Harari

About the Book In Bulla Sahau, a world where the glint of gold outshines the gleam of integrity, Jamila, the blacksmith's daughter, dares to dream beyond her station. But in a society where opportunities are auctioned to the highest bidder and merit is a forgotten currency, her aspirations are deemed worthless. The powerful see themselves as treasures, while the poor are mere doormats, their lives and futures trampled underfoot. Dust and Diamonds exposes a community suffocated by a ruthless materialism, where character is sacrificed at the altar of wealth and systemic corruption dictates every fate. As Jamila navigates this treacherous landscape, she confronts the stark reality that in Bulla Sahau, only money speaks, and those without it are condemned to silence. Her struggle is a searing indictment of a world that cherishes possessions over people, and where the pursuit of power leaves a devastating trail of shattered lives. Can one girl's defiance ignite a spark of change in a society so deeply entrenched in its venality, or will she, like so many others, become another casualty in the brutal game where wealth is the ultimate weapon? This gripping narrative challenges the very foundations of a materialistic world, asking: What hope remains when a society values gold more than the human soul?

About The Book. The book is about a tale of resistance, loyalty, and hidden truths, set against the arid beauty of a forgotten village nestled deep in the savannah. Wayam may appear as just a speck on the map, but beneath its soil lies something priceless; so valuable that powerful forces are willing to erase an entire community to claim it. Under the quiet leadership of Mzee Hassan, a seasoned village elder, the people of Wayam prepare, not just to defend their land, but to protect their history, their dignity, and the soul of their community. This story is a mirror of many silent battles fought across forgotten lands: where greed meets resilience, and where the most powerful resistance is not in weapons, but in unity, courage, and Faith.

This book emerged at a time when I felt disorientated, having lost my direction, passion, and drive. The impact of COVID-19 marked the end of my flourishing enterprise, something I had nurtured like a baby. Returning home, it felt as though the world I knew had crumbled around me, prompting desperate questioning of my life’s purpose. In this quest for one’s life mission, I dedicate this book to all those who have experienced the feeling of discontent at any stage of their lives, especially when it seems like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. In the grand scheme of things, each of us has a unique role to play on this earth. This book serves as a guide, taking you on a journey to channel your dormant passion, talents, and values into a purposeful and fulfilling life. It is my sincere belief that every reader will find words that uniquely resonate with them. May this book bring about the transformation you have been long seeking.

The Men Do Not Eat Wings – A No...

Set in Kenya and spanning almost three centuries from the pre-colonial 1700s to the turbulent 1990s, The Men Do Not Eat Wings tells the intertwined stories of eight men from five generations of a Luo family: Nwanji, Oweh, Osewe, Ang’awa, Luka, Boro, Okello, and Sakawa. In 1999, one of them, Luka, a successful farmer and businessman in western Kenya, is brutally murdered. A poor squatter on Luka’s farm is arrested and charged with committing the crime. But at Luka’s funeral, why does his widow seem to suggest that Luka might have done something that contributed to his death? The answer lies partly in Luka’s recent business dealings and the complicated relationships that underpinned them. The answer also lies in Luka’s entanglement in sinister tribalistic political schemes that soon draw in his son, Sakawa, and his brother, Okello. But most of all, the answer lies in Luka’s family history and Luo culture – both of which are marked by male dominance, bravery, violence, ambition, and love.
