A JOURNEY WITH A MONSTER

A JOURNEY WITH A MONSTER A Memoir by Benson Kimari I was not born in a hospital. I was born in a banana plantation amid heavy rain in Karundu. I am second-born of a single mother who never tasted Muratina. My great-grandfather was respected elder chosen to sacrifice an unblemished he-goat under sacred Mugumo tree, Ficus thonningii. In Agikuyu culture Mugumo was holy where God was worshipped. He brewed Muratina for birth, initiation, marriage and burial. Holy duty became addiction. He died from his own brew near his pots. His son, my grandfather, saw his father die and became man of the book, founder of PCEA Church in Karundu. He left Mugumo for cross to break curse. Yet inside that very church built to escape alcohol, I first tasted monster as altar wine in silver chalice. Container changed from gourd to chalice but spirit was same. For years I did not know my biological father. Later I learned he had bar at Kwa Junction, few metres from stage to Mukurweini Town, under big Mugumo tree where Chief Kabi held barazas. When I saw him, I saw myself. X-factor genes. Same face, same walk. He died due to alcohol, rumored liver cirrhosis. I had no factual report, but due to X-factor genes probability was truth. We were 4 boys. We had done KCPE at Karundu Primary. During Christmas Mzee Japheth brewed Muratina. It was illegal so Chief Kabi would arrest him. He hid five jerrycans in bush so Chief Kabi could not suspect. We found them. We stole one out of five and left four covered with leaves. We hid stolen one in coffee plantation near river to drink on Christmas Day after church. At 10 p.m. while other 3 boys slept, I could not sleep. I heard two voices calling. One was monster calling me to coffee plantation. Other was grandfather warning me. At midnight when all slept, I woke quietly, left barefoot so mother would not hear, and ran in dark to plantation. I found jerrycan where we hid it and drank alone. That night monster entered me. We passed KCPE and joined different schools. I went to Kiangoma Boys with Mwangi. Mwangi was expelled for bhang and alcohol. Wangechi was impregnated after soda mixed with alcohol in disco at Mukurweini. She delivered Blessing. One boy expelled for strike became boda boda rider in Karatina and killed a child while drunk. Mary's father died drunk on Jogoo Road near Maziwa Stage knocked by car. Njeri was orphaned when parents died due to drinking. She was impregnated by man known as Jethro. With no support she became barmaid at Kwa Junction and contracted HIV. Her son Maina was raised by uncle Gatumbo, who brewed Muratina at Karundu and Kwa Junction. Like me, Maina was born in banana plantation amid heavy rain. Mother could not afford hospital. Poverty repeated. At Kwa Junction under big Mugumo tree is stage for vehicles to Mukurweini Town. Under that tree Chief Kabi held barazas. He taught effects of alcohol, family dynamics in addiction, and types of addiction. He said when one drinks whole family drinks tears. Addiction is not only Muratina but bhang, tobacco, soda mixed with alcohol, gambling and fame. At same baraza we saw MPs and Councillors bringing CDF cheques of 2000 shillings for fame, yet money was government. My project Maximum Utilization of Sand became Maximum Utilization of Ethanol. I drank ethanol for experiments. We finished second in district. Five members joined university. I did not join due to poverty. Mother had broken leg and uncle had stroke. I went to Nairobi to aunt who had bar at Huruma Estate. I never stepped in university to pursue BSc Medical Laboratory. Life is riddle wrapped in mystery inside enigma. I completed CPA 2 at NYS. I earned High Diploma in Theology and Diploma in Psychology in Addiction. Ultimately Government appointed me Administrator heading Karundu Sublocation. Today boy who stole Muratina at midnight enforces law under same Mugumo tree at Kwa Junction, and registers births ensuring no child is born in banana plantation like me.

THE LIES THAT LIED TO ME A Memoir of Love, Ego, Betrayal, Accountability, and Rebuilding At forty-six, I have learned that a man can survive almost anything—gunfire, chaos, betrayal, and the crushing weight of public failure—except the truth he refuses to face. Today, I live far from where my journey began, working as a security supervisor. I am stable. I am working. I am quietly rebuilding the ruins. In many ways, I am healthier today than I have been in decades. But there was a time, not so long ago, when the darkness was so dense I was not sure I would ever find my way back to the man I used to be. If I had to summarize my forty-six years on this earth in a single breath, I would tell you the plain, unvarnished truth: I have been to hell and back. My footprint stretches across a landscape that sounds more like a cinematic thriller than a quiet human life. I have worn the uniform of the Kenya Police Force. I have walked the high-stakes, dust-choked perimeter of international security operations in Iraq. I have navigated the ruthless waters of private security, built businesses from the ground up as an entrepreneur, and tasted the intoxication of wealth and respect. I have known deep love, sacred vows, fatherhood, bitter betrayal, infidelity, messy divorces, financial collapse, debilitating depression, psychiatric hospitalization, and, ultimately, the slow, agonizing ascent toward self-discovery. It has been a life that often feels less like a biography and more like a blockbuster movie. Except there was no director calling the shots. There were no stunt doubles to take the hard hits. There was no script to predict the ending. And when the scenes became unbearable, when the pain cut so deep I could barely breathe, there was no opportunity to shout, "Cut!" I lived every single frame. I caused many of the fires. And I lost people I loved more than life itself because I was too blind to see the torch in my own hand.

Michael Wamalwa was born to an aristocratic family in the vear 1944. His enviabe ranks through various schools and colleges was more a reflection of individual brilliance than family resources. But after getting a good education at Chewoyet, Strathmore, Cambridge, and the London School of economics, he enterred the Kenya parliament and stagnated in the back benches for almost twenty years. It took the return of multi partyism for his skills to become noticeable, and as fate would have it, he found himself as the man of the moment in the prelude to the historic 2002, elections that heralded a new political dispensation.
Fortunately, he jumped the right way, and although he died just a few months after taking office as Kenya's 8th Vice president, his legacy of selflessness lives on.

The Price of Freedom Achieng Oneko: T...

KShs4,000.00 KShs3,500.00
Ramogi Achieng’ Oneko’s public life is a story of resilience and courage, as well as sacrifice and betrayal, in the pursuit of the State that Kenyans have yearned for. Oneko was among the most consequential figures in the struggle for Kenya’s independence in the 1950s and in the early 1960s, collectively known as the Kapenguria Six, after the sham trial they endured in Kapenguria, northwestern Kenya, following their arrest on 20 October 1952. Also arrested alongside Oneko by the British colonial authorities in the Kenya Colony were Jomo Kenyatta, Paul Ngei, Bildad Kaggia, Kung’u Karumba, and Fred Kubai. This book is a narrative of Oneko’s heroic life and times, largely as told by himself, and also carefully reconstructed from notes he left behind at the time of his death in 2007. It also draws from other historical sources and authorities, including primary source eye-witness accounts, to give a powerful eye–opener to the true story of the elusive quest for a Kenyan nation. The narrative explores key debates surrounding land, nationalism, governance, and post-independence state formation. Through Oneko’s reflections, you get to gain insight into the aspirations and tensions that accompanied the transition from colonial rule to self-government. This volume is an invaluable addition to the repository of the Kenyan narrative, for anyone interested in the country’s true story.

Emperor Haile Selassie by Bereket Hab...

KShs1,390.00
Emperor Haile Selassie was an iconic figure of the twentieth century, a progressive monarch who ruled Ethiopia from 1916 to 1974. This book, written by a former state official who served in a number of important positions in Selassie’s government, tells both the story of the emperor’s life and the story of modern Ethiopia. After a struggle for the throne in 1916, the young Selassie emerged first as regent and then as supreme leader of Ethiopia. Over the course of his nearly six-decade rule, the emperor abolished slavery, introduced constitutional reform, and expanded educational opportunity. The Italian invasion of Ethiopia in the 1930s led to a five-year exile in England, from which he returned in time to lead his country through World War II. Selassie was also instrumental in the founding of the Organization of African Unity in 1963, but he fell short of the ultimate goal of a promised democracy in Ethiopia. The corruption that grew under his absolute rule, as well as his seeming indifference to the famine that gripped Ethiopia in the 1970s, led finally to his overthrow by the armed forces that he had created. Haile Selassie was an enlightened monarch in many ways, but also a man with flaws like any other. This short biography is a sensitive portrayal of Selassie as both emperor and man, by one who knew him well. Bereket Habte Selassie is William E. Leuchtenburg Professor of African Studies and Law, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and former attorney general of Ethiopia as well as associate justice of the Supreme Court of Ethiopia.
