Description

The Lake is First Hut of Men by Tobias Otieno Ogola is a gripping and emotional epic that blends stark reality with the boundless power of fiction. Set against the hauntingly beautiful backdrop of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest and most sacred body of water, this monumental saga explores the lives of fifteen characters from the Luo, Baganda, Kikuyu, Acholi, Suba, and Basoga tribes. These men and women fight against invisible borders, cruel politics, and a harsh struggle for survival as they navigate life on the lake, where fishermen face humiliation and arrest by Ugandan patrols, while communities fight to reclaim their dignity.

The story is rooted in true events, where the realities of fishermen being arrested, harassed, and forced to endure brutal acts like being made to eat raw fish or thrown into merciless storms are juxtaposed with the fierce hope and resistance of the lake’s people. Islands like Remba, Ringiti, Hama, and Migingo become both sanctuaries and prisons, where lives collide amidst storms that seem to possess a soul. The novel paints a vivid portrait of families torn apart, yet clinging to survival, while women from Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda use their bodies as a means of survival in a world defined by desperation and poverty.

At its core, The Lake is First Hut of Men explores themes of cultural identity, spiritual beliefs, and resilience. Through scenes of ritual, sacrifice, and moments of fleeting beauty, Ogola weaves a tale where ancient myths and ancestral spirits whisper on the winds of the lake. The blend of magical realism and brutal reality allows the novel to transcend the ordinary, creating a world where storms become living forces, and ancestral magic offers hope against overwhelming odds. The characters’ decisions, shaped by generations of struggle, reflect the timelessness of their plight.

Ultimately, this epic is not just a work of fiction it is a living, breathing memory of those whose stories have gone untold. It is a tribute to the men and women who fight for survival in the face of an unjust world. Through Ogola’s powerful narrative, The Lake is First Hut of Men questions the very nature of ownership, borders, and the price of dignity, offering a sobering reflection on a legacy that will not be forgotten.

The System Breaker

Political / Legal Thriller
KShs4,500.00 KShs1,599.00
The System Breaker by Tobias Otieno Ogola is an unrelenting nine-season political action thriller that follows the life of Tobias Raila, a man who was born in the fires of injustice on the shores of Lake Victoria in Mbita, one of the regions the story calls Helland. Tobias is not vengeful when government troops massacre his village, seize ancestral lands, and reduce his people to silence through systematic corruption. He goes to war with the very system. Tobias, having been conditioned by his uncle Jack in matters of survival, combat and covert operations, becomes a precision weapon, unmatched in lethality. In 81 episodes of ever-increasing hostility, he deconstructs 81 war ideologies, of jungle trackers and siege tacticians to cyber operatives, intelligence agents, and mercenaries of the world. But Tobias is more than a fighter. He is a shadow economist. A robber of plundered riches. A financial system ghost. His mission: Follow national resources embezzled Infiltrate elite networks Collapse corrupt infrastructures Give back embezzled funds to the citizens. What starts in Mbita goes global stretching between Nairobi and New York to expose the engine of modern corruption; debt traps, proxy wars, corporate exploitation, and political manipulation. Every season is surgically precise: Season 1: The fall of Mbita Season 2: Weaponization Season 3: The vigilante comes out. Season 4: Media warfare Season 5: Corporate dismantling Season 6: Judicial corruption Season 7: Global expansion Season 8: Elite collapse Season 9: Psychological endgame This work is dedicated to the late King Raila Amolo Odinga and to the Luo patriots who stood, fought, and in many cases fell in the struggle for justice, land, and dignity,to Tom Mboya, Argwings Kodhek, Robert Ouko, and to the countless unnamed whose sacrifices were never fully recorded; this story exists as both remembrance and resistance, a continuation of their defiance, and a declaration that the fight they carried through history has not ended, but has evolved into a new kind of war against systems that still deny people their rightful land, voice, and dignity.

The Savanna of Silent Altars

African Interest
KShs1,599.00 KShs999.00
The Savannah  of silent Altars by Tobias otieno ogola traces the life of Kamau Otieno and Nyambura Beatrice, a family navigating the delicate balance between survival, faith, and moral endurance. Across counties from Migori to Kisumu, through the dust of rural villages, the bustle of cities, and the quiet flow of rivers, they face the unrelenting weight of government neglect, scarcity, and exploitative traditions. Their children Akinyi Grace, Anyango Mary, and Obiero Daniel move through these worlds with watchful eyes, learning the subtle currents of obedience, hope, and endurance. Miracles are whispered, altars demand faith, and exploitative figures test both courage and moral resolve. Life unfolds as a careful negotiation: a rhythm of hunger, labor, ritual, and quiet resilience, reflecting the struggles that shape everyday existence. This is a lyrical, socially conscious narrative, where personal tragedy mirrors systemic failure, and ordinary life becomes extraordinary through observation, survival, and the quiet insistence of human dignity.

You Go First

Medical/Legal [New]
KShs2,500.00 KShs999.00
You Go First by Tobias Otieno Ogola is a powerful tribute to nurses and doctors who give everything, even their own health, to care for others. In overcrowded wards, during equipment shortages, through broken ventilators, medication gaps, long shifts, and silent exhaustion, they keep showing up. They work while sick. They risk infection. They carry grief that no one sees. This book reveals the hidden cost of healthcare: the physical collapse, the psychological strain, the moral injury, and sometimes the loss of life itself. It tells the story of professionals who continue to serve despite failing systems and impossible conditions. "You go first" becomes more than comfort for the dying. It becomes a vow of sacrifice. A choice to step into danger before the patient does. This is not just a story about medicine. It is about endurance, courage, and the quiet heroism of those who stand between suffering and survival, even when it costs them everything.

Wizard of the Crow by Ngugi wa Thiongo

Books, African Interest, Kenya Fiction
Rated 3.00 out of 5
KShs3,500.00 KShs2,990.00
Brief Summary From the exiled Kenyan novelist, playwright, poet, and literary critic--a magisterial comic novel that is certain to take its place as a landmark of postcolonial African literature. In exile now for more than twenty years, Ngugi wa Thiongo has become one of the most widely read African writers of our time, the power and scope of his work garnering him international attention and praise. His aim in Wizard of the Crow is, in his own words, nothing less than "to sum up Africa of the twentieth century in the context of two thousand years of world history.” Commencing in "our times” and set in the "Free Republic of Aburiria,” the novel dramatizes with corrosive humor and keenness of observation a battle for control of the souls of the Aburirian people. Among the contenders: His High Mighty Excellency; the eponymous Wizard, an avatar of folklore and wisdom; the corrupt Christian Ministry; and the nefarious Global Bank. Fashioning the stories of the powerful and the ordinary into a dazzling mosaic, Wizard of the Crow reveals humanity in all its endlessly surprising complexity. Informed by richly enigmatic traditional African storytelling, Wizard of the Crow is a masterpiece, the crowning achievement in Ngugl wa Thiongo’s career thus far.

Petals of Blood by Ngugi Wa Thiongio

Books, African Interest, Fiction and Non Fiction, Kenya Fiction
KShs1,000.00 KShs850.00
The Mau Mau rebellion, as it is often called, which began in Kenya in the early 1950s, was a nationalist, anticolonial armed resistance against the British colonial state. The guerrilla movement called itself the Kenya Land Freedom Army; the British dubbed the movement “mau mau,” a meaningless name, to obscure the aims otherwise so clear in the resistance army’s name. Ngugi Wa Thiongío’s Petals of Blood examines, among other things, the betrayal by the postcolonial regime of the ideals of this anticolonial struggle that helped Kenya achieve its independence. The novel revolves around three men and a woman. The four friends reveal different aspects of their history to each other piecemeal, just as their families had guardedly explained the past to them. The lingering effects of the Mau Mau revolt have affected all their lives and by the end of the novel, each character is wrapped up in his or her own exclusive epiphany about life in Kenya. Abdullah, the trader, thinks he failed the movement because he did not avenge the death of a friend who was a revolutionary and who was betrayed. Munira, the schoolteacher and eventual wide-eyed prophet, is paralyzed by the shadow of his successful father, who condemned the Mau Mau but aided the crony corruption of independent Kenya. Wanja, the beauty from a broken home, learns that it was two generations of revolutionary fervor that distorted the home she grew up in. And Karega, Thiongío’s union-pushing hero, scrutinizes the history of Mau Mau as if it were a sacred text. Somewhere in that history, they all believe, is the key to wisdom and justice.
