THE VOICES OF THOSE WHO have played critical roles In leadership and administration in Kenya are rarely heard after they have left the stage. Many have carried the memories of their personal stories with them to the grave. Gone with them are significant elements of the collective story, and the institutional national memory. It has been left to commentators and sundry writers to frame them in various ways, depending on the intended purposes for each frame. In this volume, Eliud Mahihu breaks the ranks with those who served in his times, to give a candid rendition of his experience in the corridors of power, spanning wide times across the British colonial rule, the Jomo Kenyatta regime and the Daniel Arap Moi years. Mahihu was especially in his element in high level decision making spaces during the 15 years of the Jomo Kenyatta government The reader of the Mahihu story has a rare opportunity for incursion into this first-hand narrative on the life and times of one of the people who were at the centre of power in some of Kenya’s most defining moments and happenings. The rendition is crowned by eye-witness accounts and participatory narratives that capture the Jomo Kenyatta State House, and the eventual passing on of the country’s founding president on 22 August 1978, and the aftermath.

In every society, there comes a time when silence becomes more dangerous than speech. There comes a moment when citizens must move from whispers in their homes to conversations in the public square. This book is part of that moment. It is not an attack on any individual. It is a call to conscience. It is an invitation to leadership to listen.

Shadow of God

The Shadow of God is a Kenyan story set in rural Meru County, where poverty forces people into dishonest choices. At the centre is young Thĩĩrĩ, who finds himself forced to make a grown-up decision he never asked for. When those around him accept cutting corners as part of survival, Thĩĩrĩ refuses. His commitment to doing what is right costs him everything and he is pushed out into the world alone, with nothing but his faith and his honesty to hold onto. What follows is a journey of hardship, loneliness and unexpected kindness as he tries to build a life from scratch. The Shadow of God is a story about staying true to yourself when everything tempts you to do otherwise and about trusting that choosing the right path will eventually lead you somewhere good. What Others Say A mind-boggling overture for a debut author. It's quite quirky and would fit a small niche of books. - S. K .Nganaga.

Recovering the Somali State: The Role...

KShs2,000.00
Somalia is often used as an emblem of a collapsed state. This is somewhat of a paradox given that in previous decades the country was one of the most unified states in Africa and one of the first democracies on the continent. In the last three decades however the country has faced enormous challenges including civil wars and extremism in the name of Islam. The book - probably one of the first to link Islam, Islamism and Transitional Justice with the Somali State recovery project - offers unique analyses of these themes and argues that recovering the Somali state will largely be contingent upon the skillful reconciliation between tradition and modernity, Islam and state and between the secular and the sacred.

Transgressions in Matatu Culture: Anx...

Only in a matatu can you find flat-broke ex-government ministers, thieves, teachers, madmen, school children and nuns sharing the same space. To understand the matatu is to begin to understand Kenya. Many stories are performed and told within the experience of a matatu ride- but why are they enacted? What are they about and whose perspectives inform the telling? Transgressions in Matatu Culture explores the positioning of different actors in the collective performance of matatu travel experience, identifying discussions that take place in and around these vehicles and linking them to broader discourses on gender, economics, politics and power in Kenyan society and further afield in global popular culture. Deployed from multiple perspectives, some depicting clear contradictions with the lived experiences of the men (mostly) who crew these matatu, the incessant signification on the vehicles is central to the telling of stories about Nairobi. Taken together, the loud music, catchy slogans, boisterous display, and Sheng-the Kiswahili-based urban dialect that constitutes the predominant register of matatu work-among other aspects, tell us as much about matatu men as they present ideas about Kenya, and specific ways of being in Nairobi. These men have over time created and purveyed what is arguably one of postcolonial Kenya's most visible, uniquely defined and vibrant subcultural expressions. In their practices, matatu men force even the most passive observers to (re-)examine their own complex relations with them. Trying to apprehend the similarities between matatu men and their compatriots, who are assumed to be unlike them, is one way of trying to comprehend some of the workings of contemporary Kenya and Nairobi is a productive pointer to some of the transgressive processes at play. This book presents a version of the many possible stories about matatu men's resilient occupational subculture, taken as a

Climate Change Education for Sustainable Development is a useful book that shares knowledge, strategies, and practical ways to tackle climate change through education and action. It serves as a guide for teachers, students, policymakers, and communities. The book aims to improve climate literacy, foster resilience, and encourage sustainable solutions. On a global scale, the book connects with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), especially Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE). This initiative highlights education, training, and public awareness as key for addressing climate change. It supports the goals of the Paris Agreement, which promotes inclusive and participatory methods for mitigation and adaptation. At the national level, the book addresses Kenya’s Vision 2030, the Climate Change Act (2016), and the National Climate Change Action Plan (NCCAP). It also reflects the 2010 Constitution of Kenya, which guarantees the right to a clean and healthy environment. This book represents my personal effort to support Kenya’s sustainable development and climate goals. By connecting with SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land), it links global frameworks to Kenya’s local context. It empowers citizens with the knowledge and skills they need for resilience, adaptation, and sustainable development.

Bantu isn’t just another politician; he is a symbol of integrity, committed to enacting meaningful policies and development initiatives. In his efforts to combat corruption, Bantu takes bold actions, including the controversial move to involve the military to ensure accountability. In the shadows of a city built on sweet and silence, the factory gates become battlegrounds and the slums echo with the heartbeat of resistance. When workers refuse to bow to exploitation, a storm of courage, betrayal, and hope unfolds. Fire in the Factory; Shadows in the Slums follows ordinary men, women, and children who dare to rise against systems designed to keep them invisible. Their struggle burns through smoke-filled workshops, crowded alleys, and the corridors of power-revealing how unity can ignite even the darkest corners of society. This is a story of people who have nothing left to lose and everything to win. This book matters because it shows how the oppressed-armed only with unity, hope, and the truth -can rewrite their own fate. It reminds us that injustice is not distant history, but a living force shaping our world today. Readers will leave these pages inspired, awakened, and more of the power that emerges when people stand together.
