Crisis In The Horn of Africa

KShs1,495.00 KShs1,421.00
The most dangerous corner of Africa is its north-east corner where instability reigns and terrorism thrives on the antagonisms of all of its governments. This region, comprising Ethiopia, Sudan and now South Sudan, Somalia, Djibouti and Eritrea, and stretching to include Kenya and Uganda, is a pivotal geopolitical pressure point in world politics. It stands at the hinge of Africa and the Middle East. It was of vital interest to the superpowers during the Cold War and remains, in the post-Cold War period, a key area in international relations and a major source of mineral wealth, while its sufferings have been described as a scar on the conscience of humanity. But seemingly endemic political chaos, failed states, terrorism and international piracy have dealt a death blow to the ambitions of the US and her allies in the international community to further a New World Order of liberal democracy. Peter Woodward's book is essential reading for Africa and international relations specialists, including policy planners." ISBN:2147483647 Author:Peter Woodward

The Price of Freedom Achieng Oneko: T...

KShs4,000.00 KShs3,500.00
Ramogi Achieng’ Oneko’s public life is a story of resilience and courage, as well as sacrifice and betrayal, in the pursuit of the State that Kenyans have yearned for. Oneko was among the most consequential figures in the struggle for Kenya’s independence in the 1950s and in the early 1960s, collectively known as the Kapenguria Six, after the sham trial they endured in Kapenguria, northwestern Kenya, following their arrest on 20 October 1952. Also arrested alongside Oneko by the British colonial authorities in the Kenya Colony were Jomo Kenyatta, Paul Ngei, Bildad Kaggia, Kung’u Karumba, and Fred Kubai. This book is a narrative of Oneko’s heroic life and times, largely as told by himself, and also carefully reconstructed from notes he left behind at the time of his death in 2007. It also draws from other historical sources and authorities, including primary source eye-witness accounts, to give a powerful eye–opener to the true story of the elusive quest for a Kenyan nation. The narrative explores key debates surrounding land, nationalism, governance, and post-independence state formation. Through Oneko’s reflections, you get to gain insight into the aspirations and tensions that accompanied the transition from colonial rule to self-government. This volume is an invaluable addition to the repository of the Kenyan narrative, for anyone interested in the country’s true story.

SOUTH SUDAN – A Track of Neglec...

KShs4,800.00 KShs4,500.00
Historians agree that the making of modern Sudan began with the Turco-Egyptian conquest of the north in the 1820s. However, this book focuses on the periods from 1898 to 1983 and from 2005 to 2016. It covers the era of condominium rule (1899–1956), the Regional Government in Southern Sudan (1972–1983), and the time following the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005 up until the renewed outbreak of fighting in South Sudan in July 2016. During the condominium period, the present borders of Sudan were established, and decisions made during this time significantly influenced North-South relations. The book also explores the political awakening of the Southern Sudanese, who, between 1972 and 1983, briefly experienced self-governance. In July 2011, South Sudan became an independent and sovereign state following a referendum in favour of secession. The SPLM, which was the ruling party in the South both before and after independence, is evaluated in the revised Chapter 16. This chapter assesses the party's performance in government from 2005 to 2016. Additionally, the book has been updated with major revisions: Chapter 2 has been rewritten, and the revised Chapter 16 has been renumbered as Chapter 17. Other chapters have also been revised with minor changes. About the Author Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of London (1980) and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Political Science by the University of Juba in 1999. Active in politics since 1965, Dr. Akol led the SPLM/SPLA's clandestine activities from 1983. As a member of the Council of the Khartoum University Teachers Union (KUTU) from 1984 to 1986, he played a key role in organizing and executing the March/April Uprising that led to the fall of the Nimeiri regime in 1985. Following this, he and his colleagues founded the Sudan African Congress (SAC), which won two seats in the Constituent Assembly elections in 1986. In the same year, he joined the field of combat and was appointed an alternate member of the Political-Military High Command of the SPLM/SPLA. He served as Zonal Commander for Northern Upper Nile (1987-1988) and Southern Blue Nile (1990-1991) and held various political and diplomatic roles within the Movement. Dr. Akol was a key figure in the Nasir Declaration of 28 August 1991 and served as Chairman and Commander-in-Chief of SPLM-United from 1994 to 2003. His roles also included Minister of Transport (1998-2002), Administrative Supervisor of Western Bahr el-Ghazal State (2005), Minister of Foreign Affairs (2005-2007), and a member of the National Assembly representing the SPLM (2005-2009). He has been the Chairman of the National Democratic Movement since 2016. Dr. Akol has authored seven books and has contributed numerous articles to newspapers and journals.

This book has intriguing stories about Africans who live in the United States: their struggles and triumphs through the roller-coaster journies in the American Diaspora. Stuck Here is a collection of interviews with African immigrants in America as well as insightful analysis of their lives and experiences. The reader will develop awareness of factors that influence African men and women to migrate to the United States, relocating thousands of miles from their home countries where family and friends are left behind. Such factors include living in Rwanda during the infamous genocide and being the only one to survive a savage slaughter; residing in Zimbabwe before and after independence; living in South Africa during and after Apartheid; and much more. Read Stuck Here to discover how these immigrants adjust to life in the United States and to appreciate the sacrifices and struggles these individuals have endured while trying to survive in a new and challenging environment as they seek to improve their lives. In Stuck Here, Dr. Opiyo gives voice to these representative subjects, enabling them to candidly tell their own unique stories. And they are indeed intriguing stories of mixed emotions full of anecdotal humor and occasional undeniable despair and daunting dilemmas. But most importantly, they are narratives of courage, hope, and determination.

The Gatekeepers: How the White House ...

KShs3,000.00 KShs2,790.00
What do Dick Cheney and Rahm Emanuel have in common? Aside from polarizing personalities, both served as chief of staff to the president of the United States--as did Donald Rumsfeld, Leon Panetta, and a relative handful of others. The chiefs of staff, often referred to as "the gatekeepers," wield tremendous power in Washington and beyond; they decide who is allowed to see the president, negotiate with Congress to push POTUS's agenda, and--most crucially--enjoy unparalleled access to the leader of the free world. Each chief can make or break an administration, and each president reveals himself by the chief he picks. Through extensive, intimate interviews with all seventeen living chiefs and two former presidents, award-winning journalist and producer Chris Whipple pulls back the curtain on this unique fraternity. In doing so, he revises our understanding of presidential history, showing us how James Baker's expert managing of the White House, the press, and Capitol Hill paved the way for the Reagan Revolution--and, conversely, how Watergate, the Iraq War, and even the bungled Obamacare rollout might have been prevented by a more effective chief. Filled with shrewd analysis and never-before-reported details, The Gatekeepers offers an essential portrait of the toughest job in Washington.
