"The African Origin of Civilization: Myth or Reality” (1974) is a book by Cheikh Anta Diop, a Senegalese Egyptologist. It makes the case that both mankind and civilization started with black people. It argues that Ancient Egypt was largely Black African in race and culture during the first 2,000 years of its civilization. Diop’s model goes like this: 1. Homo sapiens began in Africa and began as black people. It was as black people that they spread over Asia and Europe, taking the place of the Neanderthals. 2. The rise of different races: Over time black people in northern Eurasia became light-skinned and began to look like the people who live there today. 3. Between -3000 and -1500, the region stretching from North Africa through the South West Asia to India became civilized: Egypt, Canaan, Elam, Indus, etc. People were dark-skinned, like they still are today in Ethiopia and southern India. The Bible calls them the sons of Ham. The Greeks saw them as Ethiopians of one sort or other. 4. After -1500 this region has become whiter over time as wave after wave of light-skinned barbarians over thousands of years have come down from the north. In India people were separated into light- and dark-skinned castes. Elsewhere they have mixed more thoroughly. 5. Egyptian civilization spreads north of the Sahara to Western Europe by way of Greece and south of the Sahara to West Africa by way of Nubia.

Brief Summary Why Africa is Poor looks at the fragile economic and political situation in Africa and makes the quite controversial argument that the main reason Africa’s people are poor is due to the choices made by their leaders. Dr Greg Mills draws extensively from his experiences running various presidential-level advisory teams across the continent and examines the policy choices that have stunted African development. In providing some answers to the conundrum of development, the book focuses on the way the global economy works, Africa’s record and the choices made by its leaders, the role of the outside world and the global aid regime. It assesses whether the odds are in Africa’s favour and identifies the areas where African leadership could make better choices. ISBN:9780143528098 Author:Greg Mills

Edge of Chaos Why Democracy Is Failin...

From an internationally acclaimed economist, a provocative call to jump-start economic growth by aggressively overhauling liberal democracy. Edge of Chaos: Why Democracy Is Failing to Deliver Economic Growth and How to Fix It. Around the world, people who are angry at stagnant wages and growing inequality have rebelled against established governments and turned to political extremes. Liberal democracy, history's greatest engine of growth, now struggles to overcome unprecedented economic headwinds--from aging populations to scarce resources to unsustainable debt burdens. Hobbled by short-term thinking and ideological dogma, democracies risk falling prey to nationalism and protectionism that will deliver declining living standards. In Edge of Chaos, Dambisa Moyo shows why economic growth is essential to global stability, and why liberal democracies are failing to produce it today. Rather than turning away from democracy, she argues, we must fundamentally reform it. Edge of Chaos presents a radical blueprint for change in order to galvanize growth and ensure the survival of democracy in the twenty-first century.

Kiraitu Murungi An Odyssey in Kenyan ...

In this painstakingly researched and insightful book, Professor Peter Kagwanja and co-author, Humphrey Ringera, offer a lucid panoramic view of contemporary Kenyan politics peered through the lenses of one of the iconic figures of the country's post-Mau Mau power elite — Kiraitu Murungi. The authors of this buy-one-get-three narrative depart radically from the orthodox biographical writing, weaving the life story of Murungi together with the chronicles of the Mau Mau roots of freedom and the epic rise of a post-colonial power elite as the most significant development in the last half-century of Kenya's independence. Arguably the best political portrait of a Kenyan politician since David Goldsworthy's Tom Mboya: The Man Kenya Wanted to Forget, the book succeeds in capturing the palpably tense political atmosphere, hustle and bustle and the risk-prone elbowing for power in the run-up to the 2013 elections. The authors bring out the good, the bad and the ugly of the new Kenyan power elite in politics, academy, military and business as the generation with the historic mission to deliver the country to stable democracy and prosperity or push it down the cliff of anarchy, state failure and decay. Kiraitu Murungi is a central actor in this unfolding national drama.

Brief Summary In the bestselling tradition of Sloan Crosley’s I Was Told There’d Be Cake and Mindy Kaling’s Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, a collection of humorous essays on what it’s like to be unabashedly awkward in a world that regards introverts as hapless misfits, and black as cool. My name is "J” and I’m awkward—and black. Someone once told me those were the two worst things anyone could be. That someone was right. Where do I start? Being an introvert in a world that glorifies cool isn’t easy. But when Issa Rae, the creator of the Shorty Award–winning hit series "The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” is that introvert—whether she’s navigating love, work, friendships, or "rapping”—it sure is entertaining. Now, in this debut collection of essays written in her witty and self-deprecating voice, Rae covers everything from cybersexing in the early days of the Internet to deflecting unsolicited comments on weight gain, from navigating the perils of eating out alone and public displays of affection to learning to accept yourself—natural hair and all. A reflection on her own unique experiences as a cyber pioneer yet universally appealing, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girlis a book no one—awkward or cool, black, white, or other—will want to miss. Kenya Between Hope and Despair 1963-2...

KShs6,990.00 KShs6,790.00
On December 12, 1963, people across Kenya joyfully celebrated independence from British colonial rule, anticipating a bright future of prosperity and social justice. As the nation approaches the fiftieth anniversary of its independence, however, the people's dream remains elusive. During its first five decades Kenya has experienced assassinations, riots, coup attempts, ethnic violence, and political corruption. The ranks of the disaffected, the unemployed, and the poor have multiplied. In this authoritative and insightful account of Kenya's history from 1963 to the present day, Daniel Branch sheds new light on the nation's struggles and the complicated causes behind them. Branch describes how Kenya constructed itself as a state and how ethnicity has proved a powerful force in national politics from the start, as have disorder and violence. He explores such divisive political issues as the needs of the landless poor, international relations with Britain and with the Cold War superpowers, and the direction of economic development. Tracing an escalation of government corruption over time, the author brings his discussion to the present, paying particular attention to the rigged election of 2007, the subsequent compromise government, and Kenya's prospects as a still-evolving independent state.

Overview From two-time Caine Prize finalist Elnathan John, a dynamic young voice from Nigeria, Born on a Tuesday is a stirring, starkly rendered first novel about a young boy struggling to find his place in a society that is fracturing along religious and political lines. In far northwestern Nigeria, Dantala lives among a gang of street boys who sleep under a kuka tree. During the election, the boys are paid by the Small Party to cause trouble. When their attempt to burn down the opposition’s local headquarters ends in disaster, Dantala must run for his life, leaving his best friend behind. He makes his way to a mosque that provides him with food, shelter, and guidance. With his quick aptitude and modest nature, Dantala becomes a favored apprentice to the mosque’s sheikh. Before long, he is faced with a terrible conflict of loyalties, as one of the sheikh’s closest advisors begins to raise his own radical movement. When bloodshed erupts in the city around him, Dantala must decide what kind of Muslim—and what kind of man—he wants to be. Told in Dantala’s naïve, searching voice, this astonishing debut explores the ways in which young men are seduced by religious fundamentalism and violence. " ISBN:9780802124821 Author:Elnathan John

KShs3,500.00 KShs2,990.00
Brief Summary From the exiled Kenyan novelist, playwright, poet, and literary critic--a magisterial comic novel that is certain to take its place as a landmark of postcolonial African literature. In exile now for more than twenty years, Ngugi wa Thiongo has become one of the most widely read African writers of our time, the power and scope of his work garnering him international attention and praise. His aim in Wizard of the Crow is, in his own words, nothing less than "to sum up Africa of the twentieth century in the context of two thousand years of world history.” Commencing in "our times” and set in the "Free Republic of Aburiria,” the novel dramatizes with corrosive humor and keenness of observation a battle for control of the souls of the Aburirian people. Among the contenders: His High Mighty Excellency; the eponymous Wizard, an avatar of folklore and wisdom; the corrupt Christian Ministry; and the nefarious Global Bank. Fashioning the stories of the powerful and the ordinary into a dazzling mosaic, Wizard of the Crow reveals humanity in all its endlessly surprising complexity. Informed by richly enigmatic traditional African storytelling, Wizard of the Crow is a masterpiece, the crowning achievement in Ngugl wa Thiongo’s career thus far.

UGANDA A GREAT NATION by Timoty C. Ki...

KShs2,000.00 KShs1,600.00
UGANDA A GREAT NATION” is a brand new book by debutant Ugandan author Timothy Kirenda. The book is an encapsulation of the authors perceptions and reasoning to declare that Uganda is a great nation or maybe one of the greatest nations on earth. A fairly small landlocked country east of the world’s biggest continent, why and what do you know about Uganda is the pendulum that is swung by the author throughout his piece of work. He navigates around the issues of culture or African culture as it is, politics and leadership, the history of the country, the women in the country or what we call Uganda’s beautifying aspects and also Uganda’s position on the globe. All to commemorate the authors grand standing that Uganda is a great nation, this book was written to advance the concern to the reader and to obviously confront impediments the likes of ignorance, doubt and disgruntlement. The authors assessment of Uganda as a nation colonized by the British, attained independence in 1962 and is currently run by one of Africa’s longest serving Presidents Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is an appraisal that entails the good and bad, the highs and lows and the beautiful and not so beautiful aspects.

Enyangi y’Ebitinge

Traditional Wedding in Gusii (Enyangi y'Ebitinge), published posthumously, documents the process of old-style marriage in Gusii and related steps, culminating in a wedding ceremony. The process was meticulous and made of a series of steps, each with a very clear purpose and intended not just for the couple but also for their families and clans. Abagusii attached a lot of value to marriage. It was a major landmark in the 'growing up' of a man or woman in that society. Marriage marked the transition from the care of one's parents to being independent and taking care of oneself and one's family. That transition was possible only after marriage. The importance of marriage and the honour it was accorded is underlined by the respect that was given to a married woman. For example, if she found herself late in getting home someone, that person had an obligation to ensure that she got to her home safely; after all, she was a mother and her progeny would be the link to the future. The book is a flashback to when family and relationships were valued and were at the core of order and success in society. It is especially informative today, especially when modern generations do not appear to associate as much importance to wedlock as it was in the past.
