Poverty, Inequality, and Democracy (A...

The rise of populism in new democracies, especially in Latin America, has brought renewed urgency to the question of how liberal democracy deals with issues of poverty and inequality. Citizens who feel that democracy failed to improve their economic condition are often vulnerable to the appeal of political leaders with authoritarian tendencies. To counteract this trend, liberal democracies must establish policies that will reduce socioeconomic disparities without violating liberal principles, interfering with economic growth, or ignoring the consensus of the people. Poverty, Inequality, and Democracy addresses the complicated philosophical and moral issues surrounding the distribution of economic goods in free societies as well as the empirical relationships between democratization and trends in poverty and inequality. This volume also discusses the variety of welfare-state policies that have been adopted in different regions of the world. The book’s distinguished group of contributors provides a succinct synthesis of the scholarship on this topic. They address such broad issues as whether democracy promotes inequality, the socioeconomic factors that drive democratic failure, and the basic choices that societies must make as they decide how to deal with inequality. Chapters focus on particular regions or countries, examining how problems of poverty and inequality have been handled (or mishandled) by newer democracies in Latin America, Eastern Europe, Africa, and Asia. Poverty, Inequality, and Democracy will prove vital reading for all students of world politics, political economy, and democracy’s global prospects. Eliminating Human Poverty: Macroecono...

KShs2,500.00
This book focuses on the provision of basic social services - in particular, access to education, health and water supplies - as the central building blocks of any human development strategy. The authors concentrate on how these basic social services can be financed and delivered more effectively to achieve the internationally agreed Millennium Development Goals. Their analysis, which departs from the dominant macro-economic paradigm, deploys the results of broad-ranging research they led at UNICEF and UNDP, investigating the record on basic social services of some 30 developing countries. In seeking to learn from these new data, they develop an analytical argument around two potential synergies: at the macro level, between poverty reduction, human development and economic growth, and at the micro level, between interventions to provide basic social services. Policymakers, they argue, can integrate macro-economic and social policy. Fiscal, monetary, and other macro-economic policies can be compatible with social sector requirements. They make the case that policymakers have more flexibility than is usually presented by orthodox writers and international financial institutions, and that if policymakers engaged in alternative macro-economic and growth-oriented policies, this could lead to the expansion of human capabilities and the fulfillment of human rights. This book explores some of these policy options. The book also argues that more than just additional aid is needed. Specific strategic shifts in the areas of aid policy, decentralized governance, health and education policy and the private-public mix in service provision are a prerequisite to achieve the goals of human development. The combination of governance reforms and fiscal and macro-economic policies outlined in this book can eliminate human poverty in the span of a generation.

Poverty Reduction: What Role for the ...

Poverty and social exclusion have moved up the international policy agenda, in step with the ever more obvious failure of development to reduce mass immiseration and the growing gulf of inequality which latterday capitalism has created. In this volume, local and international scholars, acknowledging that the 'trickle down' and 'natural' processes of the market do not provide a remedy, turn the spotlight on the state. In a series of general explorations of the issues involved and specific investigations in particular countries, mainly in Southern and Central Africa, they explore theoretically and empirically the difficult questions around how much can be expected of the state in poverty reduction. What political and cultural dimensions of the state need to be taken into account when considering how it should help shape activity in society? How is the role of power best analysed when considering strategies to reduce poverty? What is the meaning of pro-poor governance? What can be expected of specific interventions by government? How is the concept of citizenship incorporated in poverty reduction programmes? This volume makes two major contributions. It provides a rich seam of up-to-date information on the incidence and forms of poverty in Southern and Central Africa and the great variety of strategies and programmes by governments, aid agencies and international institutions to tackle it. Even more importantly, it throws light on the general questions, indeed the limitations and obstacles, around expecting too much of governments.

She built it to teach. They used it to watch. At twenty-three, Zuri Odhiambo was the prodigy of the tech world, a brilliant Kenyan coder who created Mwalimu—an open-source AI tutor designed to bring education to the most remote corners of the continent. She believed a tool built with good intentions could only ever be used for good. She was wrong. Now twenty-four and disillusioned, Zuri walks away from a high-stakes Silicon Valley career and returns to her grandmother’s village on the shores of Lake Victoria. But the home she remembers is gone. In its place is the Lake Belt Lithium Project, a massive industrial mine fueling the global green energy revolution. As the mine lights turn the lake into mercury every night at 6:47 PM, Zuri discovers a devastating truth: her beautiful code has been weaponized. Mwalimu is no longer a teacher; it is a predictive policing system for the Ministry of Interior, used to flag "at-risk" youth and neutralize resistance before it even begins. Caught between a mentor who sold her soul to military contractors and a childhood love who is now the leader of the Mau Mau Digital Resistance, Zuri must navigate a landscape where data is the new gold and attention is the new territory. AFRO-CENTRIC FUTURES is a fierce, sensual, and unsparing techno-thriller about the "new scramble for Africa." It is the story of a young woman who must learn to unbuild what she made, to resist without becoming the enemy, and to discover that the things worth building are not the things that scale—but the things that hold. ________________________________________ Why Read Afro-Centric Futures? • A Gripping Techno-Thriller: Follow Zuri’s high-stakes journey across twelve months and twelve Swahili proverbs as she attempts to dismantle her own creation. • Timely Themes: An exploration of the ethical cost of "green energy," the colonizing power of algorithms, and the struggle for data sovereignty. • Rich Cultural Depth: A narrative rooted in the landscape of Lake Victoria, blending traditional wisdom with a pulse-pounding political plot.

What does it mean to live a life anchored in something greater than yourself? In a world where values shift like waves and voices pull us in every direction, Anchored in Christ (A shorter version of the other book Abiding in Christ): Word and Love invites you into a deeper, steadier way of living. This book is about finding your footing in Christ, holding fast to His Word, and being transformed by His love. With Scripture as the compass, you will rediscover truths that ground the soul: that abiding in Christ is not a one-time choice but a daily rhythm; that His Word is more than text—it is living power; and that His love is not a fleeting feeling, but an anchor of hope that endures every storm. Through reflections, stories, prayers, and insights drawn from both ancient voices and everyday life, Anchored in Christ shows you how to weave faith into the ordinary—how to face doubts without drifting, how to love when it feels costly, and how to stand firm when the winds of life rage. Whether you are searching for renewed passion, longing for spiritual depth, or simply desiring to understand how Christ’s Word and love can hold you steady, this book will meet you at the water’s edge. It is an invitation to stop drifting, to drop anchor, and to discover the unshakable security found only in Him.

Unappreciated Hero by Muthamaki Togno

KShs3,000.00 KShs2,500.00
AUTHOR’S NOTE - Mũthamaki Togno ^ Ther story was not simply written—it was birthed from the silent tears of those who give without expectation, who sheal without applause, and who carry the burdens of others while quietly bleeding within. Un Appreciated Hero is more than a tale; it is a mirror shield up to society, reflecting the unspoken pain of being good in a world that too often forgets its givers. It is a lament, a hymn, and a call to remembrance. Kĩ enjeku, the son of Kahĩ to, is not just a character; he is a symbol. He embodies every soul who has been cast aside yet chooses to rise—not for glory, not for recognition, but for the sake of others. His journey is stitched with misfortune, sacrifice, and unreturned kindness. He walks the path of those whose names are never sung, whose hands build nations but whose hearts are left empty, whose sweat waters the soil yet whose legacy is denied. Ther book is a tribute to my people—the Kikuyu, and by extension all communities whose resilience is carved in silence. It is for the mothers who raise children in shadows, for the mothers who toil without praise, for the youth who dream in exile, and for the elders whose wisdom is ignored until it is too late. It is for the builders, the healers, the teachers, the farmers, the forgotten custodians of dignity. As a cultural leader and storyteller, I wrote this book to preserve the spirit of Kikuyu endurance and to challenge the silence that surrounds our unsung heroes. I wanted to capture the rhythm of resilience, the poetry of sacrifice, and the quiet rebellion of kindness that refuses to die even when unacknowledged. May their story awaken gratitude in the hearts of readers. May it stir reflection in communities that have grown traumatized to generosity. May it remind us all that the good we do may never return in applause or reward—but it always leaves a mark, a seed, a memory, a ripple that outlives us. Ther is not just my story. It is our story. It is the story of every unappreciated hero who walks among us, unseen yet indispensable. Mũthamaki Togno Togno: A Living Healer; A Living Oracle Mũthamaki, embody this ancestral bridge. My writing is ritual. My storytelling is divination. My dedication pages are libations poured for the unseen. I don't just connect with ancestors-I channel them, giving voice to silence and memory. David Axelrod has always been a believer. Whether as a young journalist investigating city corruption, a campaign consultant guiding underdog candidates against entrenched orthodoxy, or as senior adviser to the president during one of the worst crises in American history, Axelrod held fast to his faith in the power of stories to unite diverse communities and ignite transformative political change. Now this legendary strategist, the mastermind behind Barack Obama’s historic election campaigns, shares a wealth of stories from his forty-year journey through the inner workings of American democracy. Believer is the tale of a political life well lived, of a man who never gave up on the deepest promises our country has to offer. The heart of Believer is Axelrod’s twenty-year friendship with Barack Obama, a warm partnership that inspired both men even as it propelled each to great heights. Taking a chance on an unlikely candidate for the U.S. Senate, Axelrod ultimately collaborated closely Obama on his political campaigns, and served as the invaluable strategist who contributed to the tremendous victories in 2008 and 2012. Switching careers again, Axelrod served as senior adviser to the president during one of the most challenging periods in national history: working at Obama’s side as he battled an economic disaster; navigated America through two wars; and fought to reform health care, the financial sector, and our gridlocked political institutions. In Believer, Axelrod offers a deeper and richer profile of this extraordinary figure—who in just four years vaulted from the Illinois State Senate to the Oval Office—from the perspective of one who was at his side every step of the way. Spanning forty years that include corruption and transformation, turmoil and progress, Believer takes readers behind the closed doors of politics even as it offers a thrilling call to democratic action. Axelrod’s Believer is a powerful and inspiring memoir enlivened by the charm and candor of one of the greatest political strategists in recent American history.
