Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

KShs1,790.00
Charles Dickens's Great Expectations charts the course of orphan Pip Pirrip's life as it is transformed by a vast, mysterious inheritance. A terrifying encounter with the escaped convict Abel Magwitch in a graveyard on the wild Kent marshes; a summons to meet the bitter, decrepit Miss Havisham and her beautiful, cold-hearted ward Estella at Satis House; the sudden generosity of a mysterious benefactor - these form a series of events that change the orphaned Pip's life forever, and he eagerly abandons his humble station as an apprentice to blacksmith Joe Gargery, beginning a new life as a gentleman. Charles Dickens's haunting late novel depicts Pip's education and development through adversity as he discovers the true nature of his identity, and his 'great expectations'. This definitive version uses the text from the first published edition of 1861. It includes a map of Kent in the early nineteenth century, and appendices on Dickens's original ending and his working notes, giving readers an illuminating glimpse into the mind of a great novelist at work.

Eliminating Human Poverty: Macroecono...

KShs2,500.00
This book focuses on the provision of basic social services - in particular, access to education, health and water supplies - as the central building blocks of any human development strategy. The authors concentrate on how these basic social services can be financed and delivered more effectively to achieve the internationally agreed Millennium Development Goals. Their analysis, which departs from the dominant macro-economic paradigm, deploys the results of broad-ranging research they led at UNICEF and UNDP, investigating the record on basic social services of some 30 developing countries. In seeking to learn from these new data, they develop an analytical argument around two potential synergies: at the macro level, between poverty reduction, human development and economic growth, and at the micro level, between interventions to provide basic social services. Policymakers, they argue, can integrate macro-economic and social policy. Fiscal, monetary, and other macro-economic policies can be compatible with social sector requirements. They make the case that policymakers have more flexibility than is usually presented by orthodox writers and international financial institutions, and that if policymakers engaged in alternative macro-economic and growth-oriented policies, this could lead to the expansion of human capabilities and the fulfillment of human rights. This book explores some of these policy options. The book also argues that more than just additional aid is needed. Specific strategic shifts in the areas of aid policy, decentralized governance, health and education policy and the private-public mix in service provision are a prerequisite to achieve the goals of human development. The combination of governance reforms and fiscal and macro-economic policies outlined in this book can eliminate human poverty in the span of a generation.

The future he had planned for his young family felt uncertain, and the question "Why me?" echoed in the quite hours. Yet in the midst of fear, treatment far from home, and the raw uncertainty of survival, something unexpected unfolded. When the Bottom Falls Out, What Does Faith Look Like? Grief. Silence. Injustice. Delay. Exile. We’ve all felt the sting of living in a world that doesn’t make sense. But what if lament isn’t a detour from faith—but the very road that leads us deeper into it? In this deeply honest and theologically rich work, Still I Will Hope takes readers on a journey through some of Scripture’s darkest moments—and most defiant declarations of trust. From Jeremiah’s tears in Lamentations to Job’s ash heap, from Habakkuk’s trembling praise to Paul’s prison-born endurance, each chapter reveals that biblical lament is not weakness—it is worship in its rawest form. Drawing on timeless truths and modern-day stories, this book is for those who have run out of words but still whisper prayers. For those who trust God in theory but struggle in the silence. For those who love the Bible yet long for a faith that can stand when the lights go out. Whether you’re walking through personal loss, national trauma, spiritual exile, or the ache of waiting, Still I Will Hope will help you: • Rediscover the beauty of lament as a sacred language • Find strength not in escape, but in endurance • Anchor your soul in the God who remains faithful—even when nothing else is • Learn how to wait, weep, and worship in the tension between pain and promise This is not a book of easy answers. It’s a companion for hard seasons. A theological lifeline. A voice that won’t flinch at your tears. And a call to keep walking—even through the fire—with a hope that holds. Because God is still good. And even here—still, you can hope.

ZIP – UP by Renja Erambo

KShs2,100.00
ZIP-UP: Sex, Sin & Redemption is more than a manuscript — it’s a generational mandate elegantly dressed in literary brilliance. With a rare blend of candour and conviction, Renja Erambo unmasks the mystery of sex as heaven’s covenant, not man’s playground. Through biblical exposition, executive wit, and philosophical charm, he invites readers to confront the silent saboteur of destiny — uncontrolled desire. From Eden to the boardroom, from David’s palace to modern bedrooms, Renja draws parallels that pierce conscience and heal hearts. His prose is rich yet relatable; his insight, both surgical and redemptive. This is a call to purity, power, and personal governance — a truth that reminds us morality is not obsolete, but the highest form of leadership. In a culture where values have gone on sale, ZIP-UP is the rare commodity that restores worth. It whispers to every soul: “Guard your loins, preserve your seed, for nations are born or buried in your restraint.”

Disabled, disinclined to marry, and more interested in writing than a lucrative career in medicine or law, Zelu has always felt like the outcast of her large Nigerian family. Then her life is upended when, in the middle of her sister’s lavish Caribbean wedding, she’s unceremoniously fired from her university job and, to add insult to injury, her novel is rejected by yet another publisher. With her career and dreams crushed in one fell swoop, she decides to write something just for herself. What comes out is nothing like the quiet, literary novels that have so far peppered her unremarkable career. It’s a far-future epic where androids and AI wage war in the grown-over ruins of human civilization. She calls it Rusted Robots. When Zelu finds the courage to share her strange novel, she does not realize she is about to embark on a life-altering journey—one that will catapult her into literary stardom, but also perhaps obliterate everything her book was meant to be. From Chicago to Lagos to the far reaches of space, Zelu’s novel will change the future not only for humanity, but for the robots who come next. A book-within-a-book that blends the line between writing and being written, Death of the Author is a masterpiece of metafiction that manages to combine the razor-sharp commentary of Yellowface with the heartfelt humanity of Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. Surprisingly funny, deeply poignant, and endlessly discussable, this is at once the tale of a woman on the margins risking everything to be heard and a testament to the power of storytelling to shape the world as we know it.

The 2 Tribes of Kenya is a powerful exploration of Kenya's deep socio-economic divides, contrasting the affluent "Haves" with the struggling "Have Nots." Through vivid storytelling, the book highlights the stark disparities that transcend ethnic lines, showcasing the lives of business leaders, politicians, and the underprivileged working tirelessly for survival. It argues that the nation’s challenges are rooted not in tribalism but in economic inequality, impacting access to education, healthcare, and opportunities. The narrative probes into the personal stories of hope and despair, revealing how these divides shape Kenya’s socio-economic landscape. The "Have Nots" are depicted as both hopeful dreamers and hopeless victims, struggling against systemic barriers. By shedding light on these contrasting lives, the book calls for a greater understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing all Kenyans. With pictorial illustrations enhancing understanding, The 2 Tribes of Kenya encourages dialogue and reflection on the way forward for a more equitable future. This compelling read challenges readers to examine their roles in bridging the gap and fostering unity in a diverse nation, where shared humanity trumps economic divides.
