Warlord Democrats in Africa by Anders...

KShs3,900.00 KShs3,390.00
Warlord Democrats in Africa: Ex-Military Leaders and Electoral Politics (Africa Now). Post-war democratization has been identified as a crucial mechanism to build peace in war-ridden societies, supposedly allowing belligerents to compete through ballots rather than bullets. A byproduct of this process, however, is that military leaders often become an integral part of the new democratic system, using resources and networks generated from the previous war to dominate the emerging political landscape. The crucial and thus-far overlooked question to be addressed, therefore, is what effect the inclusion of ex-militaries into electoral politics has on post-war security. Can ‘warlord democrats’ make a positive contribution by shepherding their wartime constituencies to support the building of peace and democracy, or are they likely to use their electoral platforms to sponsor political violence and keep war-affected communities mobilized through aggressive discourses? This important volume, containing a wealth of fresh empirical detail and theoretical insight, and focusing on some of Africa’s most high-profile political figures – from Paul Kagame to Riek Machar to Afonso Dhlakama – represents a crucial intervention in the literature of post-war democratization.

Hallelujah The Welcome Table by Maya ...

Throughout Maya Angelou’s life, from her childhood in Stamps, Arkansas, to her world travels as a bestselling writer, good food has played a central role. Preparing and enjoying homemade meals provides a sense of purpose and calm, accomplishment and connection. Now in Hallelujah! The Welcome Table, Angelou shares memories pithy and poignant–and the recipes that helped to make them both indelible and irreplaceable. Angelou tells us about the time she was expelled from school for being afraid to speak–and her mother baked a delicious maple cake to brighten her spirits. She gives us her recipe for short ribs along with a story about a job she had as a cook at a Creole restaurant (never mind that she didn’t know how to cook and had no idea what Creole food might entail). There was the time in London when she attended a wretched dinner party full of wretched people; but all wasn’t lost–she did experience her initial taste of a savory onion tart. She recounts her very first night in her new home in Sonoma, California, when she invited M. F. K. Fisher over for cassoulet, and the evening Deca Mitford roasted a chicken when she was beyond tipsy–and created Chicken Drunkard Style. And then there was the hearty brunch Angelou made for a homesick Southerner, a meal that earned her both a job offer and a prophetic compliment: "If you can write half as good as you can cook, you are going to be famous.” Maya Angelou is renowned in her wide and generous circle of friends as a marvelous chef. Her kitchen is a social center. From fried meat pies, chicken livers, and beef Wellington to caramel cake, bread pudding, and chocolate éclairs, the one hundred-plus recipes included here are all tried and true, and come from Angelou’s heart and her home. Hallelujah! The Welcome Table is a stunning collaboration between the two things Angelou loves best: writing and cooking.

Brief Summary The story of Maya Angelou’s extraordinary life has been chronicled in her multiple bestselling autobiographies. But now, at last, the legendary author shares the deepest personal story of her life: her relationship with her mother. For the first time, Angelou reveals the triumphs and struggles of being the daughter of Vivian Baxter, an indomitable spirit whose petite size belied her larger-than-life presence—a presence absent during much of Angelou’s early life. When her marriage began to crumble, Vivian famously sent three-year-old Maya and her older brother away from their California home to live with their grandmother in Stamps, Arkansas. The subsequent feelings of abandonment stayed with Angelou for years, but their reunion, a decade later, began a story that has never before been told. In Mom & Me & Mom, Angelou dramatizes her years reconciling with the mother she preferred to simply call "Lady,” revealing the profound moments that shifted the balance of love and respect between them. Delving into one of her life’s most rich, rewarding, and fraught relationships, Mom & Me & Mom explores the healing and love that evolved between the two women over the course of their lives, the love that fostered Maya Angelou’s rise from immeasurable depths to reach impossible heights. Men can sleep in kangas, and often wear them around the house; women wear them everywhere; babies are virtually born in them, and are usually carried in a soft sling of kanga cloth. Kangas are extremely popular throughout East Africa. They make an attractive gift with multiple uses; no-one can ever have too many! In this booklet we show you 101 ways of wearing or using kangas. About half of these are styles of clothing, and the other half range from functional to fanciful! We hope that we can tempt you to invent your own styles and uses for these most pleasant and colorful pieces of cloth. " ISBN:B0027J01HE Author:Jeannette Hanby and David Bygott

Brief Summary This book was first published privately in 2001, has 127 pages, 82 beautiful colour pictures, 40 B/W photos, but no maps. MONTY BROWN (17.7.1929-15.2.2012) arrived in NYERI, Kenya in 1930 and has lived there between Mt Kenya and the Aberdare range. This is heart of Kikuyu country and the place where early settlers lived. This book is about them and the Aberdare Country Club and its sattelite lodge - THE ARK. The Club faces east towards MT KENYA (Kima-Ja-Kegnia or Kirinyaga or Ol Dionyo-Keri or Kirimara). On 3.12.1849, Krapf was first European to see Mt Kenia. On 18.12.1902, Nyeri was settled near Nyeri Hill (Na-ayier in Maasai means 'the cook'- in old Africa - a woman's job). Aberdare Country Club is perched on 'Ol Dionyo Larash'. White settlers came to farm coffee and livestock on these hills. By 1920, as Kenya Colony was formed, more white settlers came to Nyeri (6,000ft). Mt Kenya was once the highest mountain in Africa, before erosion wore away the crater walls. In 1935, Mickey and Dot Lyons bought the 'STEEP' site on the footslope of Ol Dionyo Larash. Vir Singh- a sikh, contractor from Nyeri was used. In 1937, William D Campbell built Monte Carlo Ranch House, 2 miles from the Steep. Both houses facing Mt Kenya with Aberdare Forests behind them. Then in 1967, it was thought to convert 'Steep' to a lodge and build another lodge 'The Ark' in the Aberdare Forests. Bill Woodley, Warden at Mt Kenya/Aberdares helped. Kartar Singh of Nyeri got the contract for the Ark in 1969, opening it on 1.12.1969. 'Steep' name was then changed to 'The Aberdare Country Club'. In 1980, the capacity of the Ark was increased from 60 to 123 passengers. The Club was also expanded with a golf course and 19 extra cottages. The Ark stands at the edge of YATHABARA glade with a large waterhole and salt lick surrounded by the Aberdare forests. Me and my wife visited these lodges in September 2001. First you go to the Club, leave most of your luggage, have lunch and by 2.30pm, you are taken in buses 17 miles to the Ark. After entering the Aberdare National Park, you are 4 miles from the Ark. Animals are seen straight away. No mosquitoes here. Ark, is 3 story building, your room is small with shower and toilet. There were many viewing areas to see all kinds of animals. In the middle of the night, a buzzer rang in our room, there were rhinoes at the waterhole. Next morning, after breakfast, we were back at the Club to collect the rest of our luggage. WONDERFUL. Abrahams People a Kenyan Dynasty by J...

KShs5,000.00 KShs3,999.00
Brief Summary The book, all 400 pages of it, sticks largely to the script of facts but unlike many other biographies brings Abraham’s journey alive, saturated with anecdotes, narrating the many twists in the tail of Abraham’s life as if the author had been the proverbial fly on the wall at times. Jane manages to find that perfect blend of what story telling should embrace, an embroidery of facts and at times a bit of fiction surely, giving readers of the book ‘Abraham’s People’ the impression of reading a novel rather than a dry story dictated entirely by time lines and actual events. Abraham’s escape route took him to Britain first, still as a young lad, before taking a leap into the unknown when he decided to first go to South Africa in 1901 to join up with his father, working his passage as a ‘grease monkey’ in the engine room before finally making his way to Kenya in 1903 at the age of 20. The first chapters in the book are dedicated to the story of his forefathers, how they came to Lithuania where they first prospered and then suffered under increasingly intolerant rulers, leading up to the days when first his father had to flee for his dear life before, almost one by one, the rest of the family managed to make their getaway. It must have been in those days in Leeds, when a little acorn took root in Abraham’s mind, germinating along the way, taking shape and eventually becoming a vision taking visible shape. His arrival at the port of Mombasa and the rail journey on the ‘Lunatic Express, aka as The Iron Snake’, his stepping off the train in Nairobi, back then but a depot for the railway, around which a town had just started to grow, his first meetings with contemporaries who were part of Kenya’s colonial history, all is meticulously captured by the author. Again it almost appears that Jane Barsby was present or else managed to train her looking glass back in time as she describes how Abraham met with Tommy Woods on arrival in Nairobi, who became a fast friend, or how Abraham made a quick 25 pounds profit on a land deal, which he struck with one of the Asian community’s icons Mr. Jevanjee and how he then ventured into business, farming, ranching and deal making, soon becoming part of the colonial Kenya’s ‘furniture’ too. The author ably sums up Abraham’s business acumen when she describes him as basically a jack of all trades with an uncanny ability to smell money if it could be made somewhere by buying or selling, investing or trading, importing and exporting. As the chapters add up, more and more insight is given into the life Abraham lived, the setbacks he suffered and his almost throwing in the towel had it not been for Lord Delamare, the Kenyan colony’s leading aristocrat and an icon in his own right.
