The Last Train Home by Tatenda Cather...

KShs650.00 KShs600.00
Synopsis The Last Train Home follows Khayelihle, a young Zimbabwean man returning from abroad, as he boards a cross‑country train that will take him back to the family and homeland he left behind. Haunted by memories of his late father—a railway worker whose legacy looms over him—Khaye grapples with the tension between honouring his family’s expectations and pursuing his own dreams. As the train winds through the landscapes of Zimbabwe, each stop reconnects Khaye with the places that shaped him: the sacred hills of Matobo, the bustling streets of Harare, and the quiet corners of his childhood home. Through heartfelt conversations with fellow passengers, he begins to see reflections of his own struggles—stories of sacrifice, resilience, and the enduring pull of family ties. Back home, Khaye confronts unresolved conflicts with his family, who worry that his ambitions to support local artisans through a new business venture stray too far from the stability his father valued. Through these tensions, he discovers that honouring legacy does not mean repeating the past, but building upon it. As he rekindles bonds with loved ones—through storytelling nights, shared meals, and visits to the local train station—Khaye finds clarity. He embraces a new purpose: to root his dreams in the values passed down to him and to guide future generations through mentorship and community work. Ultimately, The Last Train Home is a story about identity, belonging, and the invisible threads that tie us to our heritage. Through Khaye’s journey, the novel explores how the past shapes the future and how family—despite distance, time, or conflict—remains the compass that points us home.

Synopsis of the Waiting Wife: A Christian Guide to Embracing the Season of Preparation In a world that often equates worth with relationship status, The Waiting Wife emerges as a profound exploration of identity, purpose and divine timing. This enlightening guide invites women to embark upon a transformative journey; one that transcends the mere anticipation of a spouse and delves deeply into the essence of becoming. At its core, the book posits that true preparation is not about outward adornments or domestic skills, but rather an inward metamorphosis, where the soul is nurtured and the spirit is refined. Drawing from fecund biblical narratives, the guide illustrates the sacred dance between waiting and becoming, where every moment of solitude is an opportunity for spiritual growth and self-discovery. Through the lens of scriptural wisdom, the author encourages readers to embrace their unique journeys, recognising that the divine hand of providence is at work, even in seasons of silence. The Waiting Wife becomes a testament to the beauty of patience, urging women to cultivate their character, deepen their relationship with God and engage in the transformative power of prayer and fasting. With philosophical musings and imaginative reflections, the narrative challenges societal norms that dictate self-worth and fulfilment. It invites women to redefine their identities; not in the gaze of a partner, but in the unwavering love of the Creator. Each chapter unfolds as a meditative exploration, guiding readers to harness the fruits of the Spirit and embody virtues that foster authentic connections. As the journey unfolds, the reader is reminded that waiting is not a passive state but an active engagement in the divine narrative of life. The guide masterfully weaves together themes of hope, resilience and the sacredness of self-worth, illuminating the path toward recognising the signs of a godly partner and embracing the fullness of one’s potential. The Waiting Wife, thus, serves as a poignant reminder; in the sacred space of waiting, one is not merely preparing for another, but nurturing the garden of one’s own soul, readying oneself for the extraordinary love that awaits, anchored in purpose and divine grace

From the Introduction: 'Nowrojee wrote with finesse…you can tell that he lingered over each line, each verse, caressing the words until they carried the right weight. In this collection there are deep, heart-wrenching reflections on social justice, violence, and political chicanery. There are also light-hearted [offerings]. Through his literary exploits, Nowrojee tried to make us better people, to make Kenya a better place. Rotai the Dreamer by Tatenda Catherin...

KShs1,800.00 KShs1,500.00
Dubbed “the dreamer” by his fellow villagers, Rotai embodies the essence of aspiration amidst adversity. While others labour beneath the sun's stern gaze, he finds solace beneath the classical Musasa tree, sketching visions of vibrant futures. Yet, dreams, as the story poignantly reveals, are mere wisps against the harsh realities of hunger and despair. Rotai’s family, steeped in poverty, mirrors the cracked earth around them. His mother, Hazvinei, a seamstress grappling with the weight of survival, becomes the quiet force that ignites Rotai's resolve. A serendipitous encounter with a barren patch of land awakens in him a yearning to cultivate life where none exists. With fierce determination, Rotai seeks to transform the desolate soil into a sanctuary of growth. Despite the scepticism of his peers, he nurtures his garden with unwavering dedication, illustrating the philosophical truth that belief can birth reality from the most unyielding circumstances. The emergence of the first green shoots symbolizes not just the revival of the land, but the rekindling of hope within the community. As the garden flourishes, so too does the collective spirit of the villagers. They gather to celebrate not merely the harvest, but the reflective metamorphosis of despair into joy; a testament to the power of nurturing not just plants, but dreams and connections. Rotai’s journey from a boy labelled a dreamer to a revered agriculturalist reflects the transformative potential inherent in belief, education, and community. Thus, Rotai the Dreamer is an imaginative exploration of the interface between dreams and reality, illustrating that from the depths of desolation, one can cultivate a garden of hope; a living testament to the resilience of the human spirit, ever reaching for the light.

This book examines the causes, course and consequences of warfare in twentieth century Africa, a period which spanned colonial rebellions, both World Wars, and the decolonization process. Timothy Stapleton contextualizes the essential debates and controversies surrounding African conflict in the twentieth century while providing insightful introductions to such conflicts as: African rebellions against colonial regimes in the early twentieth century, including the rebellion and infamous genocide of the Herero and Nama people in present-day Namibia; The African fronts of World War I and World War II, and the involvement of colonized African peoples in these global conflicts; Conflict surrounding the widespread decolonization of Africa in the 1950s and 1960s; Rebellion and civil war in Africa during the Cold War, when American and Soviet elements often intervened in efforts to turn African battlegrounds into Cold War proxy conflicts; The Second Congo Civil War, which is arguably the bloodiest conflict in any region since World War II; Supported by a glossary, a who’s who of key figures, a timeline of major events, a rich bibliography, and a set of documents which highlight the themes of the book, Africa: War and Conflict in the Twentieth Century is the best available resource for students and scholars seeking an introduction to violent conflict in recent African history.

Between Rhetoric and Reality: The Sta...

Since time immemorial, indigenous peoples around the world have developed knowledge systems to ensure their continued survival in their respective territories. These knowledge systems have always been dynamic such that they could meet new challenges. Yet, since the so-called enlightenment period, these knowledges have been supplanted by the Western enlightenment science or colonial science hegemony and arrogance such that in many cases they were relegated to the periphery. Some Euro-centric scholars even viewed indigenous knowledge as superstitious, irrational and anti-development. This erroneous view has, since the colonial period, spread like veld fire to the extent of being internalised by some political elites and Euro-centric academics of Africa and elsewhere. However, for some time now, the potential role that indigenous peoples and their knowledge can play in addressing some of the global problems haunting humanity across the world is increasingly emerging as part of international discourse. This book presents an interesting and insightful discourse on the state and role that indigenous knowledge can play in addressing a tapestry of problems of the world and the challenges connected with the application of indigenous knowledge in enlightenment science-dominated contexts. The book is not only useful to academics and students in the fields of indigenous studies and anthropology, but also those in other fields such as environmental science, social and political ecology, development studies, policy studies, economic history, and African studies.

Reinventing Uganda: Political Imagina...

KShs1,500.00
In April 1979, as Idi Amin’s government crumbled in the face of the Tanzanian military advance, a moment of opportunity opened. After years of dictatorship and terrifying violence, Ugandans had the opportunity to start again. This book attempts to do justice to the multiple ways in which they imagined their future at the time, before the tragic end to these turbulent months—Milton Obote’s fraudulent election and the start of the civil war. For the first time in many years, men and – to a lesser extent – women were able to ask critical questions about what it might mean to be Ugandan, how state and society should be organised, about who should hold authority—and in the name of what. This was a time of fear and economic deprivation, in an international context largely defined by the Cold War and the emergence of neoliberalism. But it was also a time of hope, and of the flourishing of political imagination that would nurture the public debate for many years to come.
