Minding My Father’s Country by ...

KShs3,900.00 KShs3,500.00
Minding My Father’s Country follows Dr Dora Siliya’s intricate life managing public affairs in Zambia and juggling her personal and family responsibilities. Her political journey spanned two decades, and included four parliamentary election victories, two losses, and saw her serve under five presidents. She began her career in diplomatic service, after which she was appointed a government minister in six ministries. In 2009, Dr Siliya was catapulted into the limelight (and much controversy) when she was brought before a tribunal concerning the ‘sale’ of the national telecoms. Later, in 2013, she gained further national attention when she was prevented from contesting her parliamentary seat. Dr Siliya’s public life involved house searches, police detention, and court appearances. She was also the target of many political attacks and much social media attention. In Minding My Father’s Country, Dr Siliya highlights her beginnings through her family and education. Her wide public exposure is also woven through intimate stories about her encounters in various capacities both locally and internationally. This is a must-read for anyone who wishes to have crystal insight into Zambian politics and how business interests have come to be at the centre. Dr Siliya also provides readers with a clear account of her career roles and her viewpoints, making it an easy read for those who may be contemplating public life.

Freedom after Speech by Gado

Kenya has over the years made tremendous gains in the area of freedom of expression and media. In this respect, it is way ahead of its regional neighbours and many other African countries with much lower tolerance for media freedom. One can only compare it to South Africa in that respect. In my view, it is important that these gains are protected because the risk that they will be rolled back remains all too real. Since 2013, there has been a concerted campaign to limit free speech as well as the freedom of the media. During and after their election campaigns, the party leaders made no secret of their dislike of the media with President Uhuru Kenyatta at one point declaring that newspapers are only useful for wrapping meat. “I do not read them,” he declared. We have witnessed the use of intimidation, harassment and outright bribery targeting individual journalists. The craft of editorial cartooning is tough and frustrating at times, especially in this part of the world. Indeed, I subscribe to the dictum by Evelyn Beatrice Hall often misattributed to Voltaire: “I disagree with what you have to say but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it”

After six years abroad, Wanjikũ and Kabogo return to a homeland that is bubbling with optimism as it reinvents itself as an independent nation, free of colonial Britain. But leaving America has meant bidding farewell to close friends. Kabogo’s abrupt disclosure of their plans to return home was not well received by Bill and Karen, who thought the Mũchokis would remain in Hartford and were looking forward to fun times together. But all this seems to be behind them by the time the families say goodbye at the airport. For Wanjikũ, the festering conflict in her marriage is bound to play out, whether in Connecticut or Nairobi, but she will miss having Karen as a confidante. Life in Nairobi proves harder than expected. Kabogo’s government job turns out to be a sham. He finds a better opportunity and starts building his career but has little time for his wife and young daughter. Before long, he and his family are living separate lives under one roof. As they navigate the political turbulence of the 1970s and ‘80s, and the encircling tentacles of corruption in the lives of ordinary citizens, there is no shortage of reasons for disillusionment. But Wanjikũ finds solace in exciting new friendships, and in creating stylish kitenge outfits which are fast becoming the talk of the town.

How To Make This Boy Go Home With Me ...

KShs700.00 KShs650.00
How To Make This Boy Go Home With Me is a witty “manual” for love, lust, and longing in your twenties. Told as a step-by-step guide, it follows one girl’s night out as she plots, schemes, and performs her way into the attention of her longtime crush. But beneath the red dress, the lipstick, and the perfectly timed jokes lies the tender ache of wanting to be wanted; the longing not just to be seen, but to be chosen. It is a story that is both funny and vulnerable, exposing the theatrics of seduction in a messy hilarity of trying to script desire.

TRACING PRESIDENT RUTO’S JOURNE...

KShs4,200.00 KShs3,499.00

Dr. William Samoei Ruto is the fifth President of the Republic of Kenya. This book presents a detailed analysis of his speeches delivered at the inauguration ceremony as President, on national holidays, in corporate forums, in churches, during community engagements, at global summits, and on foreign visits. It captures the evolving voice of a young democracy. By writing this book, the author aims to ensure that President Ruto's promises, commitments, directives, warnings, and achievements remain accessible to current and future generations as they seek to understand Kenya’s democratic journey and the legacy of its leadership. Preserving the President's speeches in this book is vital as written records provide a lasting reference for citizens, scholars, and future leaders. Written records also capture the spirit of the times, safeguard national memory, and serve as valuable tools for civic education and leadership. By including speeches delivered in Swahili verbatim (exact words), the book enables readers to clearly understand what the President said and the context in which he said it.
