Hindsight is a wonderful thing. In the run up to the 2007 elections, few people could have predicted the national crisis that followed the disputed polls.
Kenya had gone through two fairly tense electoral contests in the preceding five years, including the landmark 2002 general election that ended decades of Kanu rule and the 2005 referendum on a contentious draft constitution. Both had been conducted peacefully despite the fact that both resulted in a decisive loss for the incumbents.
For me, the 2007/8 post-election crisis in Kenya in which more than 1,000 people lost their lives and many others were displaced as supporters of the two main contenders – Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga – staked their claim to State House was a defining experience. I was caught as unprepared as everyone else.
But one thing I never stopped doing throughout this time was to take a critical look at the whole crisis and at the issues underpinning it. Some of my cartoons were not published by my newspaper – perhaps because the editors thought as it were that caution is the better part of valour. My website and other sites on the Internet published the cartoons. Some were printed abroad. I’ll show them to you in this book.
“Crisis…? What Crisis?!” contains some of my cartoons from around the year 2000 up to now. Unlike my two previous books, this one will include anecdotal commentary about my experience as an editorial cartoonist.
Despite the harsh skepticism depicted in my drawings, it is my sincere hope that you’ll enjoy reading this book; reflect on these events and look forward to the future with optimism and confidence.
