ONE STEP THROUGH THE FIRE

KShs1,000.00
Brief Synopsis of *One Step Through the Fire* *One Step Through the Fire* is a powerful and deeply human story about resilience, family responsibility, and the quiet courage required to confront life’s hardest challenges. Set in the dry hills of Kitui, the story follows Mwendwa, a young man weighed down by poverty, his mother Mueni’s failing health, and the burden of keeping his younger brother Kyalo in school. Overwhelmed by fear and self-doubt, Mwendwa struggles to believe he is capable of changing his family’s circumstances. Through the wisdom of his mother, the encouragement of Mwende, and the practical support of his friend Muli, Mwendwa learns that transformation does not begin with certainty or confidence. It begins with a single decision to move forward despite fear. As Mwendwa steps into an unfamiliar job opportunity, he discovers that what he once saw as a consuming fire is actually a refining force—one that shapes him into a stronger, more capable man. This inspiring story reminds readers that growth is often uncomfortable, progress is rarely perfect, and sometimes the bravest thing a person can do is take one step forward when everything inside them wants to retreat.

It’s my first political fiction book. I have used literature at its best. I was inspired by the great book writer the late professor Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o. (May his soul rest in Peace). He used to write about, life, political and topical issues. I have seen an opportunity and I have grabbed it, to continue with educating, informing and entertaining our people. I’m giving voice to voiceless. Where Fiction can challenge power without direct confrontation. (when fiction challenges power, without firing a single bullet) I write Kĩorire Republic because silence had gone on too long. I saw a nation—real or imagined—where truth was buried beneath propaganda, where power was wielded not to uplift but to oppress. And I refused to let that story remain untold. I write because memory matters. Because the voices of mothers, youth, and elders deserve to echo beyond the walls of tyranny. President Mũgathe Mũkora asserted his dominance not through law, but through fear—rewriting the constitution with ink made from silence, fear and innocent blood. As stated, or reiterated I was inspired by the literary courage of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, who taught us that language is not just a tool—it’s a weapon of liberation. Like him, I chose to write not just to entertain, but to educate and awaken. I saw literature as a mirror, a torch, and a drumbeat. And I use it to remind my people that even in the darkest regimes, resistance lives in stories. Kĩorire Republic is my offering to history. A warning to future leaders. A tribute to those who dared to remember. And a call to those still afraid to speak. A Kampala Murder Plot: A Novel by Uly...

A Kampala Murder Plot is about a murder that takes place shortly after a guerrilla force takes over state power and most police officers are still in hiding. The guerrillas are handling (but also mishandling) police work with cheerful disregard for police procedure - a seemingly heinous offence in the eyes of the few returned cops that include the domineering Director of CID. Corporal Shell Sonko, briskly solving cases of jealous-husband-wife tiffs and also of citizens hurt on either side of the just-ended civil war, is accosted by Julia Koko, the dazzling dame from Germany, whose niece, Dona Kyobe Mazzi, was recently murdered in a brutal multiple homicide that Koko feels police mishandled, ignored and even prematurely closed. Employing common sense gained from reading lots of fiction and not much else, Corporal Sonko delves into the murder, quizzing big, sometimes nasty, tycoon suspects and their women, who include the wealthy and mercurial bully Jimmy Bikomago and his woman, the stunning Victoria Ntanya. Finally, from a line of likely and unlikely suspects, Sonko tentatively brings his investigation to a plausible conclusion, to the bafflement of all present but also to the chagrin of the rather toothless but quite barky Director of CID.
