MADARAKA: The Poor Shall Inherit the ...

£16.50 £14.00

This book provides a compelling examination of corporate-driven resource extraction on the African continent, which is marked by the exploitation of both people and the environment exclusively for the pursuit of profit for a few, with a specific focus on Kenya. The book meticulously reveals that the socioeconomic and environmental challenges posed by the extractive sector are not isolated incidents but part of a larger, systemic problem. This is underscored by the complex interplay between political economy, corporate globalization, odious debt, public policy, sustainable development, human rights and the rule of law. The book concludes by enjoining the call for a world order in which Africa is not exporting its raw materials, but is the centre of global manufacturing, adding value to its own resources.

In this first of the series, the four stories are ‘How the Goat Became our Friend’; ‘How the Hawk and the Crow Came to Hate Each Other’; ‘How the Beans Came to Have a Black Sport on Them’; and ‘How the Leopard Got His Spots’, and ‘How the Hyena Got an Ugly Coat’. from Barabara to Bano- Kenya’s ...

£10.45 £10.00
From the dusty estate corridors of Nairobi to the mango groves of rural Kenya, childhood has always been fuelled by imagination, rhythm, and fearless joy. From Barabara to Bano captures the heart of Kenya’s most beloved games—Kati, Brikicho, Bano, Kora, Kalongo, Chero, rain play, climbing trees, singing chants and more —and reveals the powerful developmental lessons hidden inside them. Through warm storytelling and vivid descriptions, this book shows how each game builds essential skills: creativity, confidence, teamwork, discipline, resilience, coordination, problem-solving, and cultural identity. It’s a celebration of the play that shaped us—and a guide to help today’s children reclaim it. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, guardian, or nostalgic adult, this book will remind you that play is not just entertainment. It is learning. It is culture. It is childhood at its best.

ECHOES OF RESILIENCE

£11.00
  • When Rebecca walks out of a troubled marriage in search of peace, she steps straight into the flames of Kenya’s post-election violence. With her three children, Franklin, Collins and Valentine, she must navigate a world collapsing under chaos . A world where safety is uncertain, neighbours turn into enemies, and every sunrise demands courage. As Rebecca fights to rebuild her life from the ashes, his son Franklin grows up witnessing brutality, displacement, and the quiet heroism of ordinary people. His childhood takes him from the harshness of Vumilia village to the confusing streets of Nairobi, where survival becomes a lesson learned too early. Through friendships, betrayals, loss, and unexpected second chances, he begins to understand the weight of resilience and the cost of hope. Echoes of Resilience is a raw, intimate story of a mother’s strength, a boy’s becoming, and a family determined to rise despite a world that keeps breaking them. Spanning years of struggle and healing, it captures the scars we carry, the homes we lose, and the quiet miracles that shape who we become.

A Tapestry of Menopause Among traditi...

£16.50
Menopause. This is not a word we often hear in everyday conversation. Many women are almost afraid of it, and men will hardly, if ever, speak it. It is a subject that we seldom discuss. Indeed, reference to a woman as menopausal is almost viewed as insulting; derogatory even. Yet, menopause is a biological reality, and the subject should therefore not evoke negative feelings or cause discomfort during conversation. It is a conversation that should be held freely and comfortably, by both men and women.
In this book, Wanjiru Kamau explores this uncomfortable yet critical subject by examining the perceptions of menopause among the traditional Agīküyü women. In the research, she records personal testimonies and lived experiences that offer reflections on the women's developmental stages from birth, menarche, menstruation, motherhood, and menopause, and their significance. In the process, she points the reader to the need for an examination of the subject among women. This book presents menopause among the traditional Agīküyü women as both biological and cultural, explaining how families and clans treated a girl at the onset of menarche and the different cultural responsibilities that women took up after menopause.
The testimonies given by my co-researchers - as Wanjiru prefers to call the women she interviewed - women who grew up without or with minimal influence of European education and Christianity, reveal a very different understanding and perception of women's bodies, sexuality, reproduction, and menopause from that of the Westernized woman in Kenya today. For comparison, the author shares her own journey from menarche to menopause, illustrating the negative perception of the process among educated and "Christianized" societies. That Wanjiru relies on oral testimonies as part of her research methodology is critical in demonstrating the place of oral history and tradition in knowledge production and transmission. The traditional woman was educated about her body and various developmental stages right from when she was a little girl. The society ensured that cultural education and indigenous knowledge on women's sexuality, reproduction, and self-care were passed on from generation to generation as the girls passed through the different rites.
