Mwancha Okioma holds B.Sc. (Hons), M.Sc. degrees from the University of Nairobi and has finalized a Ph.D. degree programme at Egerton University, Njoro. Mwancha Okioma was appointed as director of the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA) and is the immediate former chairman of the Commodities Fund, a state parastatal which offers easily accessible credit to the coffee, sugarcane, coconut palms and bananas sub-sectors in the country.
He is now serving as a member of the Coffee Revitalization Steering Committee under the ministry of Cooperatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development. The author has experienced firsthand the joy and sorrow that follow after payment of earnings from all these cash crops and the fights that are put up by the children especially the sons demanding their share. Some of the sons disappear from home for a period of time, only to reappear after spending all their money.
The average age of a coffee farmer in Kenya today is sixty years. That tells you that the youth have little or no interest in farming.
Unfortunately, some of those youths have little or no interest in anything else. Therefore, the author understands the essence of bringing up a son who is disciplined and focused as well as a man of integrity prepared to navigate through the corridors of this fast changing as well as challenging world.
Frank Talk to My Son is a compilation of the author's experience with fathers who shared with him the challenges they have faced as they chaperone their sons to be grown-ups who would be able to care for their immediate and wider families as their aging parents enter their sunset years. Mwancha Okioma is the author of: What They Don't Teach You Before Marriage, one of the bestselling books in The Happy Family Life Series.

Commercial Avocado Farming by Mwancha...

KShs2,000.00
Due to their high production and availability, avocados have become one of the most consumed tropical fruits in the world, especially in American and European countries, which is attributed to a high health-conscious population and high disposable income of the people: Avocado is a healthy nutrient dense fruit that has been included as a supper food. These health benefits are boosting the demand for avocados globally, by acting as major driving forces behind their increasing worldwide demand.
Also, the expanding food retail businesses and the growing product launches of avocado-based foods have increased their demand in continental and other restaurant chaim all over the world. The demand from these countries is expected to continue further due to increasing population.
Seventy percent of the avocados in Kenya are grown by smallholder farmers who have 5-20 trees per homestead. The author maintains that Kenya has the best soil and other ecological conditions to be one of the leading players in global avocado trade where Kenyan peasant as well as medium and large-scale (avocado) farmers could benefit in their fight against poverty. The Avocado Market size is estimated at USD 22.69 billion in 2024, and is expected to reach USD 35.55 billion by 2029.

THE SILENT TRAILBLAZER: Benaiah Apolo...

KShs2,500.00
The Silent Trailblazer: Benaiah Apolo Ohanga, OGW Some heroes shape history from the frontlines. Others build a nation quietly, steadily, and almost unseen. The Silent Trailblazer brings to light the remarkable life of Benaiah Apolo Ohanga (BAO), Kenya’s first African Cabinet Minister and one of the country’s least celebrated yet most consequential public servants. An educationist, trade unionist, theologian, linguist, underground journalist, and institution builder, Ohanga lived at the centre of Kenya’s transition from colonial rule to self-government. Nominated to the Legislative Council in 1947 as only the second African member, he later served from 1954 to 1957 as Cabinet Minister for Community Development, Approved Schools, Prisons, Probation, Sports, and African Affairs. Working within a difficult colonial system, Ohanga used his position to secure practical gains for Africans while mentoring a generation of leaders who would shape independent Kenya. A towering Luo scholar, remembered for his imposing height and distinctive traditional appearance, he taught future national figures including Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Achieng’ Oneko. His influence reached far beyond politics. Through the East Africa Language Committee, he contributed to linguistic and cultural mapping that helped lay foundations for modern national survey work. As Secretary of the Kenya Overseas Scholarship Advisory Committee from 1958 to 1972, he helped open doors for more than 120 young Kenyans—many of whom became Presidents, Vice Presidents, Cabinet Ministers, senior public officials, academics, doctors, lawyers, and lawmakers. This biography also reveals the man behind the public record: a devoted husband to Mama Turphosa Margaret Okinyo (Nya Gem), a father of ten, a farmer, businessman, church minister, editor of Maseno Magazine, and advocate for children with special needs. His story intersects with major figures such as Daniel arap Moi, Tom Mboya, and Mwai Kibaki, offering readers a fresh window into Kenya’s political and social history. Yet despite a lifetime of service, Ohanga faded into relative historical silence and was denied even a modest pension long withheld by the State. Drawing on rare personal archives, Olivetti-typed letters, family records, clan oral histories, and state documents, The Silent Trailblazer restores a forgotten pioneer to his rightful place in Kenya’s national memory. Compelling, deeply researched, and rich with untold history, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in Kenya’s independence journey, African leadership, education, public service, and the quiet men and women whose sacrifices built the nation. The Silent Trailblazer reminds us that not every nation-builder stood in the spotlight—some changed history through courage, intellect, faith, and steady service. Ideal for readers of Kenyan history, biographies, African leadership, public service, education, and untold stories of nation-building.

Transgressions in Matatu Culture: Anx...

KShs2,000.00 KShs1,500.00
Only in a matatu can you find flat-broke ex-government ministers, thieves, teachers, madmen, school children and nuns sharing the same space. To understand the matatu is to begin to understand Kenya. Many stories are performed and told within the experience of a matatu ride- but why are they enacted? What are they about and whose perspectives inform the telling? Transgressions in Matatu Culture explores the positioning of different actors in the collective performance of matatu travel experience, identifying discussions that take place in and around these vehicles and linking them to broader discourses on gender, economics, politics and power in Kenyan society and further afield in global popular culture. Deployed from multiple perspectives, some depicting clear contradictions with the lived experiences of the men (mostly) who crew these matatu, the incessant signification on the vehicles is central to the telling of stories about Nairobi. Taken together, the loud music, catchy slogans, boisterous display, and Sheng-the Kiswahili-based urban dialect that constitutes the predominant register of matatu work-among other aspects, tell us as much about matatu men as they present ideas about Kenya, and specific ways of being in Nairobi. These men have over time created and purveyed what is arguably one of postcolonial Kenya's most visible, uniquely defined and vibrant subcultural expressions. In their practices, matatu men force even the most passive observers to (re-)examine their own complex relations with them. Trying to apprehend the similarities between matatu men and their compatriots, who are assumed to be unlike them, is one way of trying to comprehend some of the workings of contemporary Kenya and Nairobi is a productive pointer to some of the transgressive processes at play. This book presents a version of the many possible stories about matatu men's resilient occupational subculture, taken as a
