Thomas Sankara: An African Revolution...

KShs1,390.00
Thomas Sankara, often called the African Che Guevara, was president of the West African country of Burkina Faso until his assassination during the military coup that brought down his government. An avowed Marxist, he outspokenly asserted his country’s independence from France and other Western powers and at the same time sought to build genuine pan-African unity. Ernest Harsch traces Sankara’s life from his student days to his political awakening and increasing dismay at his country’s poverty and political corruption. As Sankara rose to leadership positions, he used those offices to mobilize people for change and to counter the influence of the old, corrupt elites. He and his colleagues initiated economic and social policies that shifted the country away from dependence on foreign aid and toward a greater use of its own resources. Although Sankara’s sweeping vision and practical reforms won him admirers both in Burkina Faso and across Africa, a combination of domestic opposition groups and factions within his own government and army finally led to his assassination in 1987. This is the first English-language book to tell the story of Sankara’s life, drawing on extensive first-hand research in Burkina Faso, including interviews with the late leader. Decades after his death, Sankara remains an inspiration to youth throughout Africa for his integrity, idealism, and dedication to independence and self-deter-mination. Ernest Harsch is a research scholar at the Institute of African Studies at Columbia University. He worked on African issues at the United Nations for more than twenty years and is the author of South Africa: White Rule, Black Revolt.

Julius Nyerere: An Autobiography by P...

KShs1,590.00 KShs1,390.00
With vision, hard-nosed judgment, and biting humor, Julius Nyerere confronted the challenges of nation building in modern Africa. Constructing Tanzania out of a controversial Cold War union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar, Nyerere emerged as one of independent Africa’s most influential leaders. He pursued his own brand of African socialism, called Ujamaa, with unquestioned integrity, and saw it profoundly influence movements to end white minority rule in Southern Africa. Yet his efforts to build a peaceful nation created a police state, economic crisis, and a war with Idi Amin’s Uganda. Eventually-unlike most of his contemporaries-Nyerere retired voluntarily from power, paving the way for peaceful electoral transitions in Tanzania that continue today. Based on multinational archival research, extensive reading, and interviews with Nyerere’s family and colleagues, as well as some who suffered under his rule, Paul Bjerk provides an incisive and accessible biography of this African leader of global importance. Recognizing Nyerere’s commitment to participatory government and social equality while also confronting his authoritarian turns and policy failures, Bjerk offers a portrait of principled leadership under the difficult circumstances of postcolonial Africa.

It’s 1995, and fourteen-year-old Tati is determined to uncover the identity of her father. But her mother, Nadia, keeps her secrets close, while her grandmother Gladys remains silent about the family’s past, including why she left Land’s End, Alabama, in 1953. As Tati digs deeper, she uncovers a legacy of family secrets, where every generation of Dupree women has posed more questions than answers. From Jubi in 1917, whose attempt to pass for white ends when she gives birth to Ruby; to Ruby’s fiery lust for Sampson in 1934 that leads to a baby of her own; to the night in 1980 that changed Nadia’s future forever, the Dupree women carry the weight of their heritage. Bound by a mysterious malediction that means they will only give birth to daughters, the Dupree women confront a legacy of pain, resilience, and survival that began with an enslaved ancestor who risked everything for freedom. About this book Every day, Nuru serves coffee to strangers in a city that has learned how to look away. When rent hikes push struggling tenants to the edge, a gentle caretaker becomes the target of their anger. At work, wealthy customers complain about cold coffee while news of missing children flickers across television screens unnoticed. Around her, suffering is everywhere—yet life continues as though nothing has happened. As Nuru navigates the crowded streets of Nairobi, she begins to question the stories society tells itself about progress, morality, and civilisation. Why do ordinary people become cruel? Why does injustice become routine? Why do we remember some tragedies and forget others? And if humanity has come so far, why does so much suffering remain unchanged? Through sharp observation, dark humour, and unflinching honesty, Bizarre Civilisation explores violence, compassion, power, poverty, memory, and the quiet choices that shape who we become.
