A People Called the Agikuyu: Yesterda...

A People Called the Agikuyu: Yesterday and Today … and Tomorrow? Around A.D. 1000, a community of Bantu-Thagicu speakers left their Nyambene Hills area settlement in Igembe-Tigania, in present-day Meru country in central-eastern Kenya, in search of new homes. By A.D. 1400, this community had split into distinct, but closely related, Thagicu-speaking groups occupying a region running from Meru, through Embu and Kirinyaga to Murang’a. These groups were – from north to south – the Tharaka, Cuka, Embu, Mbeere, Gicugu, Ndia, and the Agikuyu. Gikuyu national consciousness goes back to the early 1400s. In the next 400 years, the Agikuyu would expand into Nyeri, Kiambu and parts of Nyandarwa – to occupy the land between the Four Mountains, namely Kirinyaga (Mount Kenya), Kia-Nyandarwa (the Nyandarwa Range), Kia-Njahi (Kilimambogo), and Kia-Mbiruiru (Ngong Hills). The British settler-colonialists, as they penetrated the interior of Kenya in the late 19th century, encountered the Agikuyu building fortified villages on the outskirts of the area that would grow into Nairobi. on the southern frontier – and stopped Gikuyu expansion in its tracks. What followed was the brutal and tragic drama of a war of conquest and inevitable resistance. The resistance was suppressed. But within the ensuing half century, the Mau Mau war of liberation would break out, and the Agikuyu and their Thagicu (now GEMA) cousins would suffer ruthless suppression by the mighty British Empire. This is the story of the Agikuyu, from their beginnings, through their encounter with foreign white rule, their contribution to Kenya’s liberation, and their mixed fortunes since Kenya’s national independence – what with their remarkable contribution to nation-building and economic development, but also their tragic experiences, including attempts at ethnic cleansing targeting them, their GEMA brothers and sisters and other communities in the 1990s, and also, most painfully, in 2007-8. The story is set against the historical background of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, the Scramble for and Partition of Africa, the struggles for the self-determination of African nation-states, as well as nation building in a brutal Globalized ‘New World Order” under the control of the Imperialist Western powers, The author, Paul Ngige Njoroge, studied literature at Makerere and Nairobi Universities. He has worked as a teacher and a book-publishing editor.

When I introduced Ivy- my girl friend- to my brother, I had high hopes he would’ve cut a business deal. What I didn’t know was that, that introduction would later work against me. It ended up being my worst nightmare and setting my relationship with Ivy into a spin. Stunned by the turn of events, I embarked on a truth finding mission. I was at pains to find out what could’ve led Ivy to behave the way she did on that night. I didn’t even know what her thoughts about our relationship were. But even as I was dying to know the truth, I shuddered at one thing :The thought of her telling me how lesser man I was. I had the same feelings after I witnessed a renowned businessman make her happier than I had managed in the three years we had been together.

The result of a long collaboration between a Kenyan-Somali mediator and a Swiss scholar-practitioner, Mediation and Governance in Fragile Contexts introduces an innovative, practical approach to resolving an enduring issue: How can conflicts be resolved in polarized societies? This approach breaks out of the insider/outsider dichotomy to develop a framework for achieving peace in the most challenging of contexts―a framework that unites outsider perspectives on mediation methodology with the rich experiences and reflections that only local peace practitioners can provide. The authors lay out the framework step by step, present case studies that show it in action, and clarify how local peace and security structures can act as a bridge between short-term mediation and long-term state-building efforts around the world. CONTENTS: Foreword― Ambassador Heidi Grau. Mediation and Governance in Fragile Contexts. THE FRAMEWORK. The SMALL Framework in a Nutshell. Short-term Responses: Contextualized Mediation and Process Design. Medium-term Responses: Developing Interim Peace Structures. Long-term Responses: Toward a Peaceful State for All. Death of the author by Nnedi Okorafor

KShs2,790.00
Disabled, disinclined to marry, and more interested in writing than a lucrative career in medicine or law, Zelu has always felt like the outcast of her large Nigerian family. Then her life is upended when, in the middle of her sister’s lavish Caribbean wedding, she’s unceremoniously fired from her university job and, to add insult to injury, her novel is rejected by yet another publisher. With her career and dreams crushed in one fell swoop, she decides to write something just for herself. What comes out is nothing like the quiet, literary novels that have so far peppered her unremarkable career. It’s a far-future epic where androids and AI wage war in the grown-over ruins of human civilization. She calls it Rusted Robots. When Zelu finds the courage to share her strange novel, she does not realize she is about to embark on a life-altering journey—one that will catapult her into literary stardom, but also perhaps obliterate everything her book was meant to be. From Chicago to Lagos to the far reaches of space, Zelu’s novel will change the future not only for humanity, but for the robots who come next. A book-within-a-book that blends the line between writing and being written, Death of the Author is a masterpiece of metafiction that manages to combine the razor-sharp commentary of Yellowface with the heartfelt humanity of Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. Surprisingly funny, deeply poignant, and endlessly discussable, this is at once the tale of a woman on the margins risking everything to be heard and a testament to the power of storytelling to shape the world as we know it.
