THE BUTTERFLY BAKER: Resilience, Reci...

$21.50
The Butterfly Baker is the "Special Report" on my survival. It’s the story of a journalist who treated her inflammation like a breaking news investigation and a consultant who audited her pantry to save her life. This isn't just a recipe book; it’s a Warrior’s Manual. Inside, you’ll find: The Investigative Audit: How to decode medical jargon and fact-check your ingredients. The Science of the Sweet Spot: Decadent, diabetic-friendly, grain-free recipes—from the royal Red Velvet Cake to the Lemon Ginger Muffin. The Strategy of Resilience: Lessons on "changing the angle" when your body—or your frosting—fails. Whether you are managing a chronic diagnosis or simply looking for a life with less inflammation and more flavor, Sweet Purpose proves that even when your hand is shaky, your heart can be fully alive. It’s time to stop surviving and start producing a life of victory. Warrior Tip: Acidity mimics the 'bright' flavor of salt. In Bibis Kitchen: The Recipes and Sto...

$39.00 $35.50
Grandmothers from eight eastern African countries welcome you into their kitchens to share flavorful recipes and stories of family, love, and tradition in this transporting cookbook-meets-travelogue. In this incredible volume, renowned food writer Julia Turshen and Somali chef Hawa Hassan present 75 recipes and stories gathered from bibis (or grandmothers) from eight African nations: South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar, Comoros, Tanzania, Kenya, Somalia, and Eritrea. Most notably, these eight countries are at the backbone of the spice trade, many of them exporters of things like pepper and vanilla. We meet women such as Ma Shara, who helps tourists "see the real Zanzibar" by teaching them how to make her famous Ajemi Bread with Carrots and Green Pepper; Ma Vicky, a real-life princess from Tanzania, who now lives in suburban New York and makes a mean Matoke (Stewed Plantains with Beans and Beef); and Somalia's Ashura Babu-Bi Ashura, widow to Abdulrahman Babu, the late Zanzibari Marxist and revolutionary leader, known for her Samaki Wa Kupaka (Coconut Fish Curry). Through Julia and Hawa's writing--and their own personal stories--the women, and the stories behind the recipes, come to life. With evocative photography shot on location by Khadija Farah, and food photography by Jennifer May, In Bibi's Kitchen uses food to teach us all about families, war, loss, migration, refuge, and sanctuary. Author: Hawa Hassan and Julia Turshen

A Celebrity Chef in Africa by Eamon M...

$39.00 $32.00
Eamon’s book is called, Food for the Famous: A Celebrity Chef in Africa. Yes, in his times – travelling and working across different countries, but particularly in Kenya – he has cooked for many celebrities. And, a unique thing about the autobiography is the final part, which is a collection of 18 recipes he has served to people – an amazing group that includes Queen Elizabeth, Michael Caine and Robert Redford. His many years at the Norfolk, where he was the executive chef and food and beveridge director, must have been the highpoint of his career. He must feel very proud, too, about the superb Pango Restaurant he created at the Fairview. But it was at the Norfolk that he met – and cooked for – most of his celebrities. One of the guests staying there the night of the bombing was Paul Simon, of Simon and Garfunkel fame. And over the years there were so many more; among them, in addition to the three I have mentioned above, there was Richard Burton (the great actor not the explorer!) the singer Adam Faith, the footballer Pele, the actress Meryl Streep, the actor Ben Cross, the cricketer David Gower and the racing driver Jackie Stewart. Eamon’s brief references to them are fascinating – the way he made a special soup for Michael Cain after he had complained, for example, or his judgement that Pele was "such a gentleman” and David Gower "humble and down-to-earth.” Perhaps I should jump ahead and tell you about a couple of the "celebrity recipes.”
