Bluff: A Fisheries Officer at Malindi...

KShs2,500.00 KShs2,000.00
Thomas Allfree, Malindi’s Marine Fisheries Officer in the 1950s and early 1960s, called his autobiography Bluff, because he felt he had bluffed his way through life, succeeding in various businesses and activities, even though he had never formally been trained in any of them. Allfree first managed a farm in Kenya’s Rift Valley before moving to Malindi in about 1945 and becoming a partner in Lawford’s Hotel. He operated his own fishing business and then a dhow transport business between Malindi and Lamu, before taking on the job as a fisheries officer for the coast, basing himself in Malindi. Allfree wrote this book after he was diagnosed with cancer and finished writing it before his death in 1978. The book tells how he came to Malindi after World War II and then details his work as a fisheries officer from the 1950s through 1964. However, he said nothing in the book about the last decade or more his life in Malindi after he retired as a fisheries officer. This book contains an added epilogue drafted by Old Africa magazine after meeting and interviewing many of Malindi’s older fishermen and other residents who remembered Tom. Though written as an autobiography, this book also reveals forgotten history from the island of Lamu (with first-hand character sketches of District Commissioner Charles ‘Daddy’ Cornell and ‘Coconut’ Charlie Whitton), as well as hilarious insights on riding with some of the coast’s legendary country bus drivers, burials at sea, safaris in search of eel breeding grounds and much more. When you finish reading this book, you’ll feel like you were transported back to Malindi town and a way of life on the Kenya coast that has now disappeared.

The Cole Legacy by Andrew Enniskillen

KShs3,390.00 KShs2,890.00
Although not widely known, the Cole family have made their mark in many different fields over the past 400 years when King James 1 commissioned William Cole to found the town of Enniskillen in Ireland. His descendants, the eldest son of each generation having been enobled to the Earldom of Enniskillen, included distinguished soldiers, anthropologists and politicians, three of whom latterly settled in Kenya in the late 19th century. One married the third Baron Delamere, one married Eleanor Balfour, Prime Minister Arthur Balfour's niece and one remained unmarried, although all three siblings died early from various causes before the age of fifty. Eleanor Balfour's two sons became prominent members of Kenyan society; David Cole the eldest being a member of the pre independence Legislative Council and Arthur one of the first Kenya citizens of European descent. David became the 6th Earl of Enniskillen and returned to the family estate in Ireland at the time of Kenya's independence, and upon his death Andrew the writer of this book became the 7th Earl. This is his story of how the Cole legacy evolved from the foundations laid in Kenya by his grandparents at the turn of the twentieth century and spanning the years before independence to the present day.

KShs1,800.00 KShs1,500.00
'Benga Maestro' is told through the lenses of Dr. Osito Kalle, the string doctor, Dokta Waya, and lyrical cricket who plucks and chirps out wisdom, traditional aphorism, humour, and consolation, to "edutain" his audience. A viable offspring of the Victoria Jazz family, stemming from his mentor's Awino Lawi-led Victoria C, the Mabinju songbird has grown into a gallant ballad of his current Nabii Kings Band. Thus, Benga Maestro, narrates his Benga odysseys and magnanimously shares his foresight for music, its makers, and its consumers. It is a pleasurable exploration of both the kingly Kalle, and the benign world of Benga.

The Autobiography of Gucci Mane by Gu...

KShs2,000.00 KShs1,890.00
For the first time Gucci Mane tells his story in his own words. It is the captivating life of an artist who forged an unlikely path to stardom and personal rebirth. Gucci Mane began writing his memoir in a maximum-security federal prison. Released in 2016, he emerged radically transformed. He was sober, smiling, focused, and positive—a far cry from the Gucci Mane of years past. Born in rural Bessemer, Alabama, Radric Delantic Davis became Gucci Mane in East Atlanta, where the rap scene is as vibrant as the dope game. His name was made as a drug dealer first, rapper second. His influential mixtapes and street anthems pioneered the sound of trap music. He inspired and mentored a new generation of artists and producers: Migos, Young Thug, Nicki Minaj, Zaytoven, Mike Will Made-It, Metro Boomin. Yet every success was followed by setback. Too often, his erratic behavior threatened to end it all. Incarceration, violence, rap beefs, drug addiction. But Gucci Mane has changed, and he’s decided to tell his story. In his extraordinary autobiography, the legend takes us to his roots in Alabama, the streets of East Atlanta, the trap house, and the studio where he found his voice as a peerless rapper. He reflects on his inimitable career and in the process confronts his dark past—years behind bars, the murder charge, drug addiction, career highs and lows—the making of a trap god. It is one of the greatest comeback stories in the history of music. The Autobiography of Gucci Mane is a blunt and candid account—an instant classic.

The Guyana-born executive was at the helm of Kenya's most influential and profitable company. The leading Internet Service Provider (ISP) and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) company in Kenya also had ties to Vodafone, a company headquartered in London, Gt. Britain, and Kenya's former colonial master. This relationship between Kenya's Safaricom and Gt. Britain's Vodafone illustrates the construct Ghanaian Kwame Nkrumah warned the newly independent African countries about.

Burying SM: The Politics of Knowledge...

KShs1,200.00 KShs900.00
The distinguished Kenyan lawyer S.M. Otieno died intestate in 1986; the ensuing struggle between his Kikuyu widow and his Luo clan became a matter of national concern. Debates raged over what legal, cultural, social, and historical grounds should govern the disposition of SM's remains, what legal rights should be enjoyed by widows, and over the interests of the state. While closely scrutinizing the legal case record, the authors examine how history was constructed by the various litigants, counsel, jurists, and witnesses, including an elderly gravedigger and mason, a cook, and a professor of philosophy. The authors invited a half-dozen scholars from different disciplines to discuss "what the case was really about" and "how the story should be told." These brief commentaries are included.
