Sweet and Sour Milk by Nuruddin Farah

KShs3,000.00 KShs2,890.00
The first novel in Farah's universally acclaimed Variations on the Theme of an African Dictatorship trilogy, Sweet and Sour Milk chronicles one man's search for the reasons behind his twin brother's violent death during the 1970s. The atmosphere of political tyranny and repression reduces our hero's quest to a passive and fatalistic level; his search for reasons and answers ultimately becomes a search for meaning. The often detective-story-like narrative of this novel thus moves on a primarily interior plane as "Farah takes us deep into territory he has charted and mapped and made uniquely his own" (Chinua Achebe).

SCIENCE COMMUNICATION IN SOUTH AFRIC...

KShs2,990.00 KShs2,500.00
Why do we need to communicate science? Is science, with its highly specialised language and its arcane methods, too distant to be understood by the public? Is it really possible for citizens to participate meaningfully in scientific research projects and debate? Should scientists be mandated to engage with the public to facilitate better understanding of science? How can they best communicate their special knowledge to be intelligible? These and a plethora of related questions are being raised by researchers and politicians alike as they have become convinced that science and society need to draw nearer to one another. Once the persuasion took hold that science should open up to the public and these questions were raised, it became clear that coming up with satisfactory answers would be a complex challenge. The inaccessibility of scientific language and methods, due to ever increasing specialisation, is at the base of its very success. Thus, translating specialised knowledge to become understandable, interesting and relevant to various publics creates particular perils. This is exacerbated by the ongoing disruption of the public discourse through the digitisation of communication platforms. For example, the availability of medical knowledge on the internet and the immense opportunities to inform oneself about health risks via social media are undermined by the manipulable nature of this technology that does not allow its users to distinguish between credible content and misinformation. In countries around the world, scientists, policy-makers and the public have high hopes for science communication: that it may elevate its populations educationally, that it may raise the level of sound decision-making for people in their daily lives, and that it may contribute to innovation and economic well-being. This collection of current reflections gives an insight into the issues that have to be addressed by research to reach these noble goals, for South Africa and by South Africans in particular.

This book emerged at a time when I felt disorientated, having lost my direction, passion, and drive. The impact of COVID-19 marked the end of my flourishing enterprise, something I had nurtured like a baby. Returning home, it felt as though the world I knew had crumbled around me, prompting desperate questioning of my life’s purpose. In this quest for one’s life mission, I dedicate this book to all those who have experienced the feeling of discontent at any stage of their lives, especially when it seems like there is no light at the end of the tunnel. In the grand scheme of things, each of us has a unique role to play on this earth. This book serves as a guide, taking you on a journey to channel your dormant passion, talents, and values into a purposeful and fulfilling life. It is my sincere belief that every reader will find words that uniquely resonate with them. May this book bring about the transformation you have been long seeking.

Eastern Butterfly by Sandra Nekh

The Eti, of little known East African monarchy Kdzigu Ety, are proud to possess a remarkable self-contained culture. They are an independent nation, developed from the split of the 18th Century Kingdom of Kidzigu Eti ―The Butterfly― to become Kdzigu Ety in the East and Mammor in the West. A jaded old-timer American journalist, Aaron ‘Pelle’ Carter, travels to Kdzigu Ety searching for a career-defining story. The region is vibrant and alive, courtesy of the annual harvest festival and a Royal wedding. Mr. Carter relishes the idea of documenting a post-modern monarchical wedding ceremony though his true interests lie in the Butterfly’s aging patriarchal sovereigns ―Ikha Saram of Kdzigu Ety and Aba Naifa of Mammor, and their heirs, the Eastern Princess ―the Sifakh Lateiya Saram― and the Western Prince ―the Bukizo Kasim Naifa. Beyond the Butterfly’s brilliance in propelling the African narrative, there lay secrets, and deviations that could change the fate of the whole region.

Southern African Liberation Struggles...

KShs79,000.00 KShs69,000.00
These 9 volumes are the most comprehensive historical record of the liberation struggles in southern Africa. Comprising 2.4 million words in 5,394 pages, they record interviews with liberation fighters and supporters in the Frontline States and the extraordinary sacrifices they made so that Africa could, at last, be free. With the fall of the South African apartheid regime, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) identified the need to record the experiences of the liberation struggles in Southern Africa, from 1960, until that final liberation in 1994. To that end, SADC launched the Hashim Mbita Project – named after the last Executive Secretary of the OAU Liberation Committee. The research covered liberation movements in the countries which engaged in liberation wars, the Frontline States and Extension countries; and the Research Project team comprised members from the SADC mainland states of Angola, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Lesotho and Swaziland. The support received from other regions is documented: Anglophone West Africa, Francophone Africa, North Africa, East Asia, Canada and the United States, Cuba and the Caribbean, the German Democratic Republic (GDR), Nordic Countries, Western Europe, the Soviet Union, Non-Aligned Movement: India, Yugoslavia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka; Organisation of African Unity and United Nations.

Abdilatif Abdalla: Poet in Politics e...

Abdilatif Abdalla: Poet in Politics celebrates the work of Abdilatif Abdalla, one of Kenya’s most well-known poets and a committed political activist. It includes commentary essays on aspects of Abdilatif Abdalla’s work and life, through inter-weaving perspectives on poetry and politics, language and history; with contributions by East African writers and scholars of Swahili literature, including Ngugi wa Thiong’o, Said Khamis, Ken Walibora, Ahmed Rajab, Mohamed Bakari, and Sheikh Abdilahi Nassir, among others. Abdalla became famous in 1973, with the publication of Sauti ya Dhiki (Voice of Agony), a collection of poems written secretly in prison during three years of solitary confinement (1969-72). He was convicted of circulating pamphlets against Jomo Kenyatta’s KANU government, criticizing it as ‘dictatorial’ and calling for political resistance in the pamphlet, 'Kenya: Twendapi?' (Kenya: where are we heading?). His poetry epitomizes the ongoing currency of classic Swahili form and language, while his work overall, including translations and editorships, exemplifies a two-way mediation between ‘traditional’ and ‘modern’ perspectives. It makes old and new voices of Swahili poetry and African literature accessible to a wider readership in East Africa, and beyond. Abdalla has lived in exile since 1973, in Tanzania, London, and subsequently, until now, in Germany. Nevertheless, Swahili literature and Kenyan politics have remained central to his life.
