Dead Reckoning

The first criminal investigation textbook written by an African practitioner, for the African investigator. What happens when the modern police system fails to deliver justice, and communities turn to methods that have worked for centuries? In Dead Reckoning I, retired senior intelligence and investigation officer J. Chelal draws on over thirty-five years of operational experience to write the book he wished had existed when he was a young constable. The result is a groundbreaking text that teaches modern investigative protocol, crime scene management, evidence handling, and the investigation of every major crime type, while doing something no other textbook does: taking seriously the African realities within which investigation actually occurs. From the principles of investigation to the courtroom, this book walks the investigator through every stage of the criminal justice process. It includes detailed protocols for investigating homicide, robbery, traffic incidents, drug trafficking, cyber crime, community disputes, and gender-based violence. It explains the court process step by step. It confronts the contemporary challenges of political violence, artificial intelligence, and the exploitation of young Africans abroad, the neo-slavery of Kazi Majuu. Most criminal investigation textbooks are written by Western academics for Western students, in contexts where forensic laboratories are available, witness protection is functional, and the community trusts the police. African investigators work in a different reality. This book speaks directly to that reality. It acknowledges the resource constraints. It addresses the political pressures. It examines the spiritual dimensions of crime and justice that the formal system ignores. And it makes a compelling, evidence-based argument: that before colonialism introduced the modern police, Africa had its own effective systems of investigation, and those systems, the elder's council, the investigative oath, the community truth-finding ritual, still function today. The investigator who ignores them is investigating with one eye closed.

Tumetenga ( We have Set Aside :-Fake Chronicles) Poetry as a Weapon. Poetry as Witness. Poetry as Survival. Poetry as vision for Africa's political salvation. In this landmark anthology, over fifty poets from across Africa—including Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Cameroon, and Zimbabwe—bear witness to a continent at a crossroads. With unflinching honesty and breathtaking artistry, they expose electoral betrayal, dictatorship, corruption, police brutality, abduction, and the quiet suffocation of dissent. But these poems do not stop at despair. They envision Pan-African unity. They demand accountability. They insist on the possibility of a new dawn. "If Africa was waiting for an anthology to speak to her politics and governance, this is it." — Prof. PLO Lumumba "Power doesn't retire. It just rebrands." — Joy Achungo, "Wanjiku, I Am Not a Thief" "Our blood is the tax for being alive." — Ruth Jepkorir Koech, "We Want to Live" "This is not poetry—this is a test of your patience and courage." — Bonface Otieno Okinyi, "What Was Your Reason, Gen Z?" A collection that will disturb your sleep, trouble your conscience, and remind you that another world is possible.

THE SILENT TRAILBLAZER: Benaiah Apolo...

KShs2,500.00
The Silent Trailblazer: Benaiah Apolo Ohanga, OGW Some heroes shape history from the frontlines. Others build a nation quietly, steadily, and almost unseen. The Silent Trailblazer brings to light the remarkable life of Benaiah Apolo Ohanga (BAO), Kenya’s first African Cabinet Minister and one of the country’s least celebrated yet most consequential public servants. An educationist, trade unionist, theologian, linguist, underground journalist, and institution builder, Ohanga lived at the centre of Kenya’s transition from colonial rule to self-government. Nominated to the Legislative Council in 1947 as only the second African member, he later served from 1954 to 1957 as Cabinet Minister for Community Development, Approved Schools, Prisons, Probation, Sports, and African Affairs. Working within a difficult colonial system, Ohanga used his position to secure practical gains for Africans while mentoring a generation of leaders who would shape independent Kenya. A towering Luo scholar, remembered for his imposing height and distinctive traditional appearance, he taught future national figures including Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Achieng’ Oneko. His influence reached far beyond politics. Through the East Africa Language Committee, he contributed to linguistic and cultural mapping that helped lay foundations for modern national survey work. As Secretary of the Kenya Overseas Scholarship Advisory Committee from 1958 to 1972, he helped open doors for more than 120 young Kenyans—many of whom became Presidents, Vice Presidents, Cabinet Ministers, senior public officials, academics, doctors, lawyers, and lawmakers. This biography also reveals the man behind the public record: a devoted husband to Mama Turphosa Margaret Okinyo (Nya Gem), a father of ten, a farmer, businessman, church minister, editor of Maseno Magazine, and advocate for children with special needs. His story intersects with major figures such as Daniel arap Moi, Tom Mboya, and Mwai Kibaki, offering readers a fresh window into Kenya’s political and social history. Yet despite a lifetime of service, Ohanga faded into relative historical silence and was denied even a modest pension long withheld by the State. Drawing on rare personal archives, Olivetti-typed letters, family records, clan oral histories, and state documents, The Silent Trailblazer restores a forgotten pioneer to his rightful place in Kenya’s national memory. Compelling, deeply researched, and rich with untold history, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in Kenya’s independence journey, African leadership, education, public service, and the quiet men and women whose sacrifices built the nation. The Silent Trailblazer reminds us that not every nation-builder stood in the spotlight—some changed history through courage, intellect, faith, and steady service. Ideal for readers of Kenyan history, biographies, African leadership, public service, education, and untold stories of nation-building.
