Freedom after Speech by Gado

Kenya has over the years made tremendous gains in the area of freedom of expression and media. In this respect, it is way ahead of its regional neighbours and many other African countries with much lower tolerance for media freedom. One can only compare it to South Africa in that respect. In my view, it is important that these gains are protected because the risk that they will be rolled back remains all too real. Since 2013, there has been a concerted campaign to limit free speech as well as the freedom of the media. During and after their election campaigns, the party leaders made no secret of their dislike of the media with President Uhuru Kenyatta at one point declaring that newspapers are only useful for wrapping meat. “I do not read them,” he declared. We have witnessed the use of intimidation, harassment and outright bribery targeting individual journalists. The craft of editorial cartooning is tough and frustrating at times, especially in this part of the world. Indeed, I subscribe to the dictum by Evelyn Beatrice Hall often misattributed to Voltaire: “I disagree with what you have to say but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it”

When Life Hangs in The Balance: Beyon...

KShs1,500.00
This book was born in pain, nurtured in silence, and delivered in hope. When I began this journey, I had no intention of writing a memoir. I was simply trying to survive. One moment, I was a passionate cyclist chasing the wind, a man I knew I will be destined to greatness; the next, I was lying in a hospital bed after being rammed by a truck when it lost control, unable to move leaving me for the dead, dependent on others to breathe, to wash, even to pray for me when I could not find the words. My body was broken—but something deeper inside me was being remade. When Life Hangs in the Balance: Beyond the Brink is not just the story of an accident. It is the story of what happens after everything familiar collapses. It is a journey through physical pain, mental anguish, spiritual questions, and—above all—a rediscovery of grace, identity, and purpose. In these pages, I open up about the darkest moments, the long nights, the tears, and the strange kind of light that somehow shines through it all. This book also honors the people who stood by me: my wife, my brothers, my children, my extended family, and countless friends—some of whom I had never met before they became part of my healing. I write this not just as Deogratius, but also as a brother among brothers, a father, a husband, a son of the soil, and a child of faith. To anyone who has ever suffered, questioned, or cried out in silence—this book is for you. If even one sentence in these pages reminds you that you are not alone, then this story has done what it was meant to do. —Deogratius Langat

Under Our Skin A journey November 21,...

1570: A street teems with activity in Renaissance Lisbon: boatmen unload passengers as jugglers entertain the crowd and vendors hawk their goods. The crowd is large, and more than half of it is Black. Most are enslaved African people performing an array of duties, but there are free Africans too, and somebody else: a Black knight astride a horse. Four hundred and fifty years later, novelist and journalist Joaquim Arena stands in a museum, transfixed by the character depicted on this canvas by an anonymous Flemish painter. He doesn’t know it yet, but the knight is Joao de Sá Panasco, a one-time slave who nevertheless became an Afro-Portuguese nobleman. So begins Under Our Skin, a wide-ranging investigation that seeks to know the people of the early African diaspora, and tell their stories. Arena was born in the tiny state of Cape Verde, a small chain of islands off the West Coast of Africa which were uninhabited before Portugal chose them for a slave-trade post—a place made famous in part by Herman Melville's essay on the nature of Cape Verdeans (known as 'Gees') who were common fixtures on whaling vessels. With this awareness, Arena creates a hybrid text of travel writing, memoir, and history, filled with portraits of complex and fascinating characters. There is Dido Elizabeth Belle, the daughter of a slave raised a gentlewoman in England; Abraham Petrovitch Gannibal, abducted from Africa as a boy, only to be groomed as a nobleman under Peter the Great; Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, son of a Haitian slave, who became a French general in the Napoleonic Wars; Jacobus Capitein, from Ghana, who studies at a European university only to become a pro-slavery Christian minister in the Netherlands; and Carlos Marcelino da Graça or ‘Sweet Daddy Grace’, from Cape Verde, who became an incredibly influential and successful church leader and faith healer in the United States. Triggered by the death of his adoptive father, Arena interlaces the stories of historical figures with those of his own childhood in Cape Verde, as well as his early years in Lisbon. Like many Cape Verdeans, his step-father was a seaman and heavy drinker whose death provides a springboard for connection to the Cape Verde immigrant experience at large. Arena ties these stories to the wider diasporas connecting the island to Europe, the US, and finally, back to Africa. In the end, the author heads to the southern tip of Portugal, known as the Algarve, where 230 Africans were brought in 1444, marking the beginning of the Atlantic slave trade. With a skillful translation by Jethro Soutar that captures Arena’s insightful, accessible style, Under Our Skin is a story unlike anything else. Of it the Jornal Económico, a leading newspaper in Portugal, has called it “the closest thing” the Portuguese language has to W.G. Sebald.
