Description

Civil Wars in Africa, edited by Kelechi A. Kalu and George Klay Kieh, Jr., examines civil conflicts throughout various African countries. They argue that civil wars in Africa are by-products of the contradictions and crises engendered by the post-colonial state-building and nation-building projects in Africa. With few exceptions, the post-colonial states in Africa have failed to build societies that invest in the material well-being of their citizens; protect their political, civil, and other rights; promote accountability, transparency, the rule of law, judicial independence, and the holding of free and fair elections; and promote ethnic pluralism, tolerance, mutual respect, and peaceful co-existence, among others. In addition, the contributors show that the post-colonial states in Africa have been ruled by corrupt and autocratic leaders, who are obsessed with the maintenance of state power as the pathway to ensuring the private accumulation of wealth through sundry illegal means, including bribery, extortion, and theft of public funds. In sum, this volume addresses how the failure of the post-colonial African state to shepherd the process of building democratic societies based on the centrality of human security has led to the erosion of the legitimacy of the state and its custodians. Thus, once the contradictions and crises reached their crescendo, these post-colonial societies than implode into civil wars, even at the micro-level.

The Changing World Order: Why Nations Succeed and Fail by Ray Dalio

Books, Business, Entrepreneurs, International Bestsellers
KShs5,000.00 KShs4,500.00
A few years ago, renowned investor Ray Dalio began noticing a confluence of political and economic conditions he hadn’t encountered before in his fifty-year career. They included large debts and zero or near-zero interest rates in the world’s three major reserve currencies; significant wealth, political, and values divisions within countries; and emerging conflict between a rising world power (China) and the existing one (US). Seeking to explain the cause-effect relationships behind these conditions, he began a study of analogous historical times and discovered that such combinations of conditions were characteristic of periods of transition, such as the years between 1930 and 1945, in which wealth and power shifted in ways that reshaped the world order. Looking back across five hundred years of history and nine major empires—including the Dutch, the British, and the American—The Changing World Order puts into perspective the cycles and forces that have driven the successes and failures of all the world’s major countries throughout history. Dalio reveals the timeless and universal dynamics that were behind these shifts, while also offering practical principles for policymakers, business leaders, investors, and others operating in this environment.

The Gen Z Manifesto by Chris Njehu

Politics & Government
KShs1,500.00 KShs1,200.00
Ever wonder what Kenya’s future would look like if the Gen Z movement could crystallise into an ideology pursued at the ballot? Could Kenya be where the Asian Tigers were in the 1960s, before they achieved their economic miracle? The Gen Z Manifesto takes a bold stab at answering these questions. Grounded in history, the book examines the forces that have shaped Africa’s past and draws lessons from ancient civilisations, including Kemet (Ancient Egypt), Mesopotamia, the Han Chinese Empire and the Mali Empire. It then turns to the Asian Tigers and other high-performing Asian economies to explore the policies and conditions behind their remarkable transformation. But The Gen Z Manifesto is more than an economic blueprint. It argues that strong families are the foundation of a strong society and calls for renewed efforts to create environments in which children can thrive under the guidance of both parents. At its political heart, the book revisits the birthplace of democracy in ancient Athens, where citizens gathered in the Agora to deliberate on matters affecting their society. Inspired by this tradition, it calls on Kenya’s Gen Z and Millennials to establish Citizens’ Deliberation Councils across the country—spaces where citizens can collectively shape Kenya’s social, political and economic agenda through consensus.

In the Republic of Zuwena, the charismatic Jaza Pesa wins the premiership on grand promises of free education and clean water for the poor. But once inside the State Palace, the campaign poetry dies. Confronted with an empty treasury, the new regime builds a massive wall to hide the wealth of the elite from the scarcity of the Mizizi slums, sparking a chain reaction of strikes, water rationing, and state violence. Driven by the insights of a brilliant student leader named Amani, the community must learn a dangerous new literacy to unmask the true face of power. A powerful, timely contemporary African narrative about corruption, survival, and the ultimate accountability of the written word.

Mugathe mukora

Politics & Government
KShs4,000.00 KShs3,000.00
It’s my first political fiction book. I have used literature at its best. I was inspired by the great book writer the late professor Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o. (May his soul rest in Peace). He used to write about, life, political and topical issues. I have seen an opportunity and I have grabbed it, to continue with educating, informing and entertaining our people. I’m giving voice to voiceless. Where Fiction can challenge power without direct confrontation. (when fiction challenges power, without firing a single bullet) I write Kĩorire Republic because silence had gone on too long. I saw a nation—real or imagined—where truth was buried beneath propaganda, where power was wielded not to uplift but to oppress. And I refused to let that story remain untold. I write because memory matters. Because the voices of mothers, youth, and elders deserve to echo beyond the walls of tyranny. President Mũgathe Mũkora asserted his dominance not through law, but through fear—rewriting the constitution with ink made from silence, fear and innocent blood. As stated, or reiterated I was inspired by the literary courage of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, who taught us that language is not just a tool—it’s a weapon of liberation. Like him, I chose to write not just to entertain, but to educate and awaken. I saw literature as a mirror, a torch, and a drumbeat. And I use it to remind my people that even in the darkest regimes, resistance lives in stories. Kĩorire Republic is my offering to history. A warning to future leaders. A tribute to those who dared to remember. And a call to those still afraid to speak. BY MŪTHAMAKI TOGNO TOGNO Mũthamaki Togno Togno: A Living Healer; A Living Oracle Mũthamaki, embody this ancestral bridge. My writing is ritual. My storytelling is divination. My dedication pages are libations poured for the unseen. I don't just connect with ancestors-I channel them, giving voice to silence and memory. About the Author: Mũthamaki Togno is a revered elder, storyteller, and cultural visionary born to Kagũ of the Mwenda clan and Gathiori of the Gicerũ lineage. Thingira na Müthamaki Raised among proverbs, prayers, and the pulse of tradition, he grew into a seer, singer. apostle, and truth-teller - called to awaken the spirit of his people through language, laughter, and legacy. His work spans media houses including Utv, ATG FM, Coro FM, Gūkena FM, Gīkūyū TV, Sasa TV, Gĩchichio Ty and many more. BEYOND OBSESSION WITH TITLE DEEDS AND ACRES

Governance, Politics, Kenya, Law
KShs2,500.00

Beyond Obsession with Title Deeds and Acres examines Kenya’s enduring land question from a historical, legal, constitutional and governance perspective. It traces the transformation of land from communal systems of tenure through colonial dispossession and post-independence redistribution to the contemporary era of constitutional reform, digitisation and institutional change. The book explores how land has become intertwined with identity, political power, economic opportunity, historical injustice and social belonging, while examining the institutions, laws and policies that have shaped its administration.

At its heart, the book argues that Kenya must broaden its understanding of land beyond ownership and the acquisition of title deeds. Secure ownership remains important, but land must also be viewed as a productive resource, a foundation for development, and a trust held across generations. Drawing from Kenya’s historical experience, constitutional framework, institutional challenges and comparative lessons, the book calls for a shift from an obsession with title deeds and acres towards stewardship, productive use, accountable governance, environmental sustainability and intergenerational responsibility.
