Beyond Obsession with Title Deeds and Acres examines Kenya’s enduring land question from a historical, legal, constitutional and governance perspective. It traces the transformation of land from communal systems of tenure through colonial dispossession and post-independence redistribution to the contemporary era of constitutional reform, digitisation and institutional change. The book explores how land has become intertwined with identity, political power, economic opportunity, historical injustice and social belonging, while examining the institutions, laws and policies that have shaped its administration.

At its heart, the book argues that Kenya must broaden its understanding of land beyond ownership and the acquisition of title deeds. Secure ownership remains important, but land must also be viewed as a productive resource, a foundation for development, and a trust held across generations. Drawing from Kenya’s historical experience, constitutional framework, institutional challenges and comparative lessons, the book calls for a shift from an obsession with title deeds and acres towards stewardship, productive use, accountable governance, environmental sustainability and intergenerational responsibility.

Description

Beyond Obsession with Title Deeds and Acres is a critical examination of Kenya’s enduring land question and a call to rethink what land means to the nation. It argues that land is not merely property or a commodity, but a foundation of history, identity, livelihood, dignity, economic opportunity, environmental sustainability and national cohesion. At the heart of the book is a simple proposition: Kenya has become too obsessed with title deeds and acres. Secure tenure is essential, but a title deed should be the beginning of opportunity and responsible stewardship—not the end of land reform. Kenya has too often confused ownership with wealth, acreage with productivity, subdivision with development, and registration with transformation. The real question is not simply who owns land, but how it is acquired, governed, used and made productive. The book traces the contemporary land question to the colonial transformation of indigenous systems of landholding. Colonial policies displaced communities, disrupted established relationships with ancestral land and converted land into a commodity capable of exclusive ownership and alienation. Independence transferred political sovereignty but did not automatically eliminate these inequalities. Post-independence settlement and redistribution programs created opportunities for many Kenyans, but were frequently compromised by political patronage, corruption, weak administration and elite capture. The Constitution of Kenya, 2010, the National Land Policy and the land laws enacted in 2012 provided an important framework for addressing these failures. Yet the book makes a critical distinction between legal reform and institutional transformation. Progressive laws cannot deliver justice where institutions are weak, compromised or lacking professional integrity. Kenya’s land question is therefore, fundamentally, a governance question requiring institutions that are professional, independent, transparent, accountable and worthy of public trust. The book further argues that technology, while essential, is not a substitute for integrity. Digitization can improve efficiency, transparency and security, but digitizing a defective land record does not cure the defect. Genuine reform requires verification and cleansing of historical records, professional competence, cybersecurity, ethical administration and institutional accountability. Historical injustices must likewise be confronted through credible mechanisms of restitution, compensation, redistribution and other appropriate remedies. But restorative justice must be based on constitutional principles, objective criteria and transparent institutions, rather than ethnic entitlement or political mobilization. Unresolved land disputes can otherwise become ethnicised and threaten social cohesion and national stability. Most importantly, the book moves the land debate beyond redistribution. Land ownership does not automatically create prosperity. Productive land requires infrastructure, water, markets, credit, technology, appropriate planning and environmental stewardship. Land policy must therefore be integrated with agriculture, housing, infrastructure, climate resilience and environmental conservation. The book explores sustainable settlement models and proposes a National Wealth Register to provide a broader and more reliable understanding of Kenya’s land and other national assets. Ultimately, the book calls for a new culture of land administration founded upon integrity, competence, impartiality, transparency, accountability and public service. Land must cease to be primarily an instrument of political power, speculation, exclusion and division and become a foundation for justice, productivity, prosperity and national cohesion. Kenya must therefore move: from ownership to stewardship; from acreage to productivity; from historical grievance to restorative justice; from title deeds to trustworthy institutions; and from redistribution alone to sustainable development. The book’s ultimate proposition is simple but transformative: Kenya must stop asking only how much land a person owns and start asking what that land can do—for the individual, the community, the economy, the environment and generations yet unborn.

Brief Summary Reacher takes a stroll through a small Wisconsin town and sees a class ring in a pawn shop window: West Point 2005. A tough year to graduate: Iraq, then Afghanistan. The ring is tiny, for a woman, and it has her initials engraved on the inside. Reacher wonders what unlucky circumstance made her give up something she earned over four hard years. He decides to find out. And find the woman. And return her ring. Why not? So begins a harrowing journey that takes Reacher through the upper Midwest, from a lowlife bar on the sad side of small town to a dirt-blown crossroads in the middle of nowhere, encountering bikers, cops, crooks, muscle, and a missing persons PI who wears a suit and a tie in the Wyoming wilderness. The deeper Reacher digs, and the more he learns, the more dangerous the terrain becomes. Turns out the ring was just a small link in a far darker chain. Powerful forces are guarding a vast criminal enterprise. Some lines should never be crossed. But then, neither should Reacher. ISBN:9780399593482 Author:Lee Child

The Practice of Groundedness: A Transformative Path to Success That Feeds Not Crushes Your Soul by Brad Stulberg

Books
KShs1,500.00 KShs1,200.00
Achievement often comes at a cost. Angst, restlessness, frayed relationships, exhaustion, and even substance abuse can be the unwanted side effects of an obsession with outward performance. While the high of occasional wins can keep you going for a while, playing into the always-on, never enough hustle culture ultimately takes a serious toll. In The Practice of Groundedness, bestselling author Brad Stulberg shares a healthier, more sustainable model for success. At the heart of this model is groundedness--a practice that values presence over rote productivity, accepts that progress is nonlinear, and prioritizes long-term values and fulfillment over short-term gain. To be grounded is to possess a firm and unwavering foundation, a resolute sense of self from which deep and enduring, not shallow and superficial, success can be found. Groundedness does not eliminate ambition and striving; rather, it situates these qualities and channels them in more meaningful ways. Interweaving case studies, modern science, and time-honored lessons from ancient wisdom traditions such as Buddhism, Stoicism, and Taoism, Stulberg teaches readers how to cultivate the habits and practices of a more grounded life. Readers will learn: * Why patience is the key to getting where you want to go faster--in work and life--and how to develop it, pushing back against the culture's misguided obsession with speed and "hacks." * How to utilize the lens of the wise observer in order to overcome delusion and resistance to clearly see and accept where you are—which is the key to more effectively getting where you want to go * Why embracing vulnerability is the key to genuine strength and confidence * The critical importance of "deep community," or cultivating a sense of belonging and connection to people, places, and causes. Provocative and practical, The Practice of Groundedness is the necessary corrective to the frenetic pace and endemic burnout resulting from contemporary definitions of success. It offers a new—and better—way.

White Mischief by James Fox

Books, African Interest, Governance
KShs2,000.00 KShs1,790.00
Brief Summary Just before 3am on January 24th, 1941, when Britain was preoccupied with surviving the Blitz, the body of Josslyn Hay, Earl of Erroll, was discovered lying on the floor of his Buick, at a road intersection some miles outside Nairobi, with a bullet in his head. A leading figure in Kenya's colonial community, he had recently been appointed Military Secretary, but he was primarily a seducer of other men's wives. Sir Henry Delves Broughton, whose wife was Erroll's current conquest, had an obvious motive for the murder, but no one was ever convicted and the question of who killed him became a classic mystery, a scandel and cause celebre. Among those who became fascinated with the Erroll case was Cyril Connolly. He joined up with James Fox for a major investigation of the case in 1969 for the SUNDAY TIMES magazine. After his death James Fox inherited the obsession and a commitment to continue in pursuit of the story both in England and Kenya in the late 1970s. One day, on a veranda overlooking the Indian Ocean, Fox came across a piece of evidence that seemed to bring all the fragments and pieces together and convinced him that he saw a complete picture.

We Need to Talk About Africa: The Harm We Have Done, and how We Should Help

Books, African Interest, Energy, Governance, History, International Bestsellers
Rated 5.00 out of 5
KShs1,890.00 KShs1,399.00
Brief Summary If you boil a kettle twice today, you will have used five times more electricity than a person in Mali uses in a whole year. How can that be possible? Decades after the colonial powers withdrew Africa is still struggling to catch up with the rest of the world. When the same colonists withdrew from Asia there followed several decades of sustained and unprecedented growth throughout the continent. So what went wrong in Africa? And are we helping to fix it, or simply making matters worse? In this provocative analysis, Tom Young argues that so much has been misplaced: our guilt, our policies, and our aid. Human rights have become a cover for imposing our values on others, our shiniest infrastructure projects have fuelled corruption and our interference in domestic politics has further entrenched conflict. Only by radically changing how we think about Africa can we escape this vicious cycle.

The Politics by Aristotle

Books, Dictionaries & References, Fiction and Non Fiction, Governance, Self Help & Motivation
KShs2,290.00
Brief Summary What is the relationship of the individual to the state? What is the ideal state, and how can it bring about the most desirable life for its citizens? What sort of education should it provide? What is the purpose of amassing wealth? These are some of the questions Aristotle attempts to answer in one of the most intellectually stimulating works. Both heavily influenced by and critical of Plato's Republic and Laws, Politics represents the distillation of a lifetime of thought and observation. "Encyclopaedic knowledge has never, before or since, gone hand in hand with a logic so masculine or with speculation so profound," says H. W. C. Davis in his introduction. Students, teachers, and scholars will welcome this inexpensive new edition of the Benjamin Jowett translation, as will all readers interested in Greek thought, political theory, and depictions of the ideal state.

Party Politics and Economic Reform in Africa’s Democracies by M Anne Pitcher

Books, African Interest, Governance
KShs6,000.00 KShs4,999.00
Brief Summary In Party Politics and Economic Reform in Africa's Democracies, M. Anne Pitcher offers an engaging new theory to explain the different trajectories of private sector development across contemporary Africa. Pitcher argues that the outcomes of economic reforms depend not only on the kinds of institutional arrangements adopted by states in order to create or expand their private sectors, but also on the nature of party system competition and the quality of democracy in particular countries. To illustrate her claim, Pitcher draws on several original data sets covering twenty-seven countries in Africa, and detailed case studies of the privatization process in Zambia, Mozambique, and South Africa. This study underscores the importance of formal institutions and political context to the design and outcome of economic policies in developing countries.

Crude Nation: How Oil Riches Ruined Venezuela by Ral Gallegos

Books, African Interest, Governance, International Bestsellers
KShs3,000.00 KShs2,699.00
Brief Summary Beneath Venezuelan soil lies an ocean of crude—the world’s largest reserves—an oil patch that shaped the nature of the global energy business. Unfortunately, a dysfunctional anti-American, leftist government controls this vast resource and has used its wealth to foster voter support, ultimately wreaking economic havoc. Crude Nation reveals the ways in which this mismanagement has led to Venezuela’s economic ruin and turned the country into a cautionary tale for the world. Raúl Gallegos, a former Caracas-based oil correspondent, paints a picture both vivid and analytical of the country’s economic decline, the government’s foolhardy economic policies, and the wrecked lives of Venezuelans. Without transparency, the Venezuelan government uses oil money to subsidize life for its citizens in myriad unsustainable ways, while regulating nearly every aspect of day-to-day existence in Venezuela. This has created a paradox in which citizens can fill up the tanks of their SUVs for less than one American dollar while simultaneously enduring nationwide shortages of staples such as milk, sugar, and toilet paper. Gallegos’s insightful analysis shows how mismanagement has ruined Venezuela again and again over the past century and lays out how Venezuelans can begin to fix their country, a nation that can play an important role in the global energy industry.

Do Not Disturb: The Story of a Political Murder and an African Regime Gone Bad by Michela Wrong

Books, African Interest, Governance
KShs2,490.00 KShs2,290.00
A powerful investigation into a grisly political murder and the authoritarian regime behind it: Do Not Disturb upends the narrative that Rwanda sold the world after one of the deadliest genocides of the twentieth century. We think we know the story of Africa’s Great Lakes region. Following the Rwandan genocide, an idealistic group of young rebels overthrew the brutal regime in Kigali, ushering in an era of peace and stability that made Rwanda the donor darling of the West, winning comparisons with Switzerland and Singapore. But the truth was considerably more sinister. Vividly sourcing her story with direct testimony from key participants, Wrong uses the story of the murder of Patrick Karegeya, once Rwanda’s head of external intelligence and a quicksilver operator of supple charm, to paint the portrait of a modern African dictatorship created in the chilling likeness of Paul Kagame, the president who sanctioned his former friend’s assassination.

Edge of Chaos Why Democracy Is Failing by Dambisa Moyo

Books, African Interest, Governance
KShs2,300.00 KShs2,090.00
From an internationally acclaimed economist, a provocative call to jump-start economic growth by aggressively overhauling liberal democracy. Edge of Chaos: Why Democracy Is Failing to Deliver Economic Growth and How to Fix It. Around the world, people who are angry at stagnant wages and growing inequality have rebelled against established governments and turned to political extremes. Liberal democracy, history's greatest engine of growth, now struggles to overcome unprecedented economic headwinds--from aging populations to scarce resources to unsustainable debt burdens. Hobbled by short-term thinking and ideological dogma, democracies risk falling prey to nationalism and protectionism that will deliver declining living standards. In Edge of Chaos, Dambisa Moyo shows why economic growth is essential to global stability, and why liberal democracies are failing to produce it today. Rather than turning away from democracy, she argues, we must fundamentally reform it. Edge of Chaos presents a radical blueprint for change in order to galvanize growth and ensure the survival of democracy in the twenty-first century.

Brief Summary Man, the state, and war is the second of the Topical Studies in International Relations to be published. The series was planned to demonstrate some of the contributions which existing bodies of knowledge are capable of making to the understanding of modern international relations. Even in a relatively new field of academic specialization, it is not necessary for the scholar to make an absolutely fresh start. Indeed, it is incumbent upon him not to fail to draw on existing storehouses of knowledge. One of those storehouses least systematically inventoried for its usefulness for international relations is classical Western political thought....

Why Nations Fail by Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson

Books, Governance
KShs3,000.00 KShs2,690.00
Brilliant and engagingly written, Why Nations Fail answers the question that has stumped the experts for centuries: Why are some nations rich and others poor, divided by wealth and poverty, health and sickness, food and famine? Is it culture, the weather, geography? Perhaps ignorance of what the right policies are? Simply, no. None of these factors is either definitive or destiny. Otherwise, how to explain why Botswana has become one of the fastest growing countries in the world, while other African nations, such as Zimbabwe, the Congo, and Sierra Leone, are mired in poverty and violence? Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson conclusively show that it is man-made political and economic institutions that underlie economic success (or lack of it). Korea, to take just one of their fascinating examples, is a remarkably homogeneous nation, yet the people of North Korea are among the poorest on earth while their brothers and sisters in South Korea are among the richest. The south forged a society that created incentives, rewarded innovation, and allowed everyone to participate in economic opportunities. The economic success thus spurred was sustained because the government became accountable and responsive to citizens and the great mass of people. Sadly, the people of the north have endured decades of famine, political repression, and very different economic institutions—with no end in sight. The differences between the Koreas is due to the politics that created these completely different institutional trajectories. Based on fifteen years of original research Acemoglu and Robinson marshall extraordinary historical evidence from the Roman Empire, the Mayan city-states, medieval Venice, the Soviet Union, Latin America, England, Europe, the United States, and Africa to build a new theory of political economy with great relevance for the big questions of today, including: - China has built an authoritarian growth machine. Will it continue to grow at such high speed and overwhelm the West? - Are America’s best days behind it? Are we moving from a virtuous circle in which efforts by elites to aggrandize power are resisted to a vicious one that enriches and empowers a small minority? - What is the most effective way to help move billions of people from the rut of poverty to prosperity? More philanthropy from the wealthy nations of the West? Or learning the hard-won lessons of Acemoglu and Robinson’s breakthrough ideas on the interplay between inclusive political and economic institutions? Why Nations Fail will change the way you look at—and understand—the world."

Neither Settler nor Native: The Making and Unmaking of Permanent Minorities by Mahmood Mamdani

Books, Governance
KShs3,500.00 KShs3,100.00
Brief Summary Making the radical argument that the nation-state was born of colonialism, this book calls us to rethink political violence and reimagine political community beyond majorities and minorities. In this genealogy of political modernity, Mahmood Mamdani argues that the nation-state and the colonial state created each other. In case after case around the globe―from the New World to South Africa, Israel to Germany to Sudan―the colonial state and the nation-state have been mutually constructed through the politicization of a religious or ethnic majority at the expense of an equally manufactured minority. The model emerged in North America, where genocide and internment on reservations created both a permanent native underclass and the physical and ideological spaces in which new immigrant identities crystallized as a settler nation. In Europe, this template would be used by the Nazis to address the Jewish Question, and after the fall of the Third Reich, by the Allies to redraw the boundaries of Eastern Europe’s nation-states, cleansing them of their minorities. After Nuremberg the template was used to preserve the idea of the Jews as a separate nation. By establishing Israel through the minoritization of Palestinian Arabs, Zionist settlers followed the North American example. The result has been another cycle of violence. Neither Settler nor Native offers a vision for arresting this historical process. Mamdani rejects the “criminal” solution attempted at Nuremberg, which held individual perpetrators responsible without questioning Nazism as a political project and thus the violence of the nation-state itself. Instead, political violence demands political solutions: not criminal justice for perpetrators but a rethinking of the political community for all survivors―victims, perpetrators, bystanders, beneficiaries―based on common residence and the commitment to build a common future without the permanent political identities of settler and native. Mamdani points to the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa as an unfinished project, seeking a state without a nation.

Why We’re Polarized Book by Ezra Klein

Books, Governance
KShs3,000.00 KShs2,399.00
Brief Summary Discover how American politics became a toxic system, why we participate in it, and what it means for our future--from journalist, political commentator, and cofounder of Vox, Ezra Klein. After Election Day 2016, both supporters and opponents of the soon-to-be president hailed his victory as a historically unprecedented event. Most Americans could agree that no candidate like Donald Trump had ever been elected President before. But political journalist Ezra Klein makes the case that the 2016 election wasn't surprising at all. In fact, Trump's electoral victory followed the exact same template as previous elections, by capturing a nearly identical percentage of voter demographics as previous Republican candidates. Over the past 50 years in America, our partisan identities have merged with our racial, religious, geographic, ideological, and cultural identities. Those merged identities have attained a weight that is breaking much in our politics and tearing at the bonds that hold this country together. In this groundbreaking book, Klein shows how and why American politics polarized around identity in the 20th century, and what that polarization did to the way we see the world and each other. And he traces the feedback loops between our polarized political identities and our polarized political institutions that are driving our political system towards crisis. Neither a polemic nor a lament, Klein offers a clear framework for understanding everything from Trump's rise to the Democratic Party's leftward shift to the politicization of everyday culture. A revelatory book that will change how you look at politics, and perhaps at yourself.

Brief Summary For over sixty-five years, the United States war machine has been on automatic pilot. Since World War II we have been conditioned to believe that America's motives in 'exporting' democracy are honorable, even noble. In this startling and provocative book, William Blum, a leading dissident chronicler of US foreign policy and the author of controversial bestseller Rogue State, argues that nothing could be further from the truth. Moreover, unless this fallacy is unlearned, and until people understand fully the worldwide suffering American policy has caused, we will never be able to stop the monster.
