MEET THE AUTHOR: EBENEZER O. OTIENO

The African Writer Behind Beneath the African Sky: A Continent on Auction
Who is Ebenezer O. Otieno?
Ebenezer O. Otieno is an African author, Pan-Africanist, scriptwriter, educator, and scholar of English Literature at Kibabii University in Kenya. He is a literary voice concerned with African identity, political accountability, cultural heritage, intellectual independence, social justice, and the future of a continent whose immense potential continues to exist alongside persistent inequalities and unfulfilled promises.
Through his writing, Otieno seeks to do more than entertain. He uses literature as a means of questioning established systems, challenging comfortable assumptions, preserving African experiences, and encouraging readers to reconsider the relationship between power and responsibility. His work is driven by the conviction that stories can become instruments of critical thought, that the written word can challenge the normalization of injustice, and that Africa’s future must be shaped by Africans who are willing to think independently about their societies.
His published book, Beneath the African Sky: A Continent on Auction, introduces readers to this intellectual and literary vision. It is a work of fiction with a distinctly Pan-African consciousness, bringing together storytelling, political reflection, cultural debate, and a call for social transformation.
Otieno belongs to a generation of African writers asking difficult questions about the society they have inherited, the institutions that govern them, and the kind of future they wish to leave behind.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Beneath the African Sky: A Continent on Auction
What happens when a continent rich in resources, culture, intelligence, and human potential begins to lose ownership of its own destiny?
This is the central question at the heart of Beneath the African Sky: A Continent on Auction, a provocative African novel by Ebenezer O. Otieno, published by Elong’o Publishers.
Set in Mbita Rusinga, along the shores of Lake Victoria, the novel follows Oloo, a thoughtful and ambitious African man whose personal struggles gradually develop into a broader confrontation with the political, economic, cultural, and intellectual crises facing his society. In a community marked by drought, hunger, unemployment, and the weight of inherited traditions, Oloo is forced to confront a painful contradiction: how can a people possess extraordinary potential yet continue to endure conditions that deny them the opportunity to realize it?
As the story unfolds, Oloo’s journey becomes inseparable from the fate of his community. His encounters with traditional authority, political power, education, religion, family life, and social inequality expose the tensions between preserving cultural identity and embracing necessary change. He must grapple with the wisdom of his ancestors without becoming imprisoned by the past, pursue progress without surrendering his identity, and question authority without losing sight of the people whose lives depend on responsible leadership.
Yet the drought that ravages Mbita is only one dimension of the crisis. Beneath the physical suffering lies a deeper social and intellectual drought: a society in which educated young people struggle to find employment, institutions fail to fulfil their promises, and the hopes of ordinary citizens are repeatedly compromised by corruption, exploitation, and indifference.
It is against this landscape that the novel’s most powerful metaphor emerges: the auction of Africa.
In Otieno’s vision, a continent can lose its inheritance without formally surrendering its independence. Its resources may be extracted, its labour exploited, its political decisions influenced by competing interests, its educational priorities distorted, and its cultural confidence weakened. Even religion and literature, institutions capable of liberating the human mind, can become instruments of commercial interest, imitation, or control when their deeper responsibilities are abandoned.
The auction, therefore, is not simply about the selling of material wealth. It is about the gradual surrender of ownership over ideas, institutions, identity, and the future itself.
Oloo begins to recognize that Africa’s predicament cannot be explained by colonial history alone. The deeper tragedy lies in the continuation of systems and attitudes that allow exploitation to survive long after colonial rule has formally ended. The question is no longer merely who once ruled Africa, but who now determines its priorities, controls its opportunities, and defines the limits of its imagination.
Through Oloo’s growing consciousness and confrontation with oppressive power, the novel explores the courage required to speak against injustice. His struggle becomes a testament to the power of ideas and collective action, demonstrating that the voice of an individual can grow into a movement when it gives expression to the frustrations and aspirations of a people.
The narrative eventually moves beyond resistance towards the possibility of reconstruction. Oloo’s rise to leadership as Emperor of Mbita introduces a vision of transformation built around technological advancement, economic development, improved healthcare, education, social reform, and inclusive prosperity. The future imagined by the novel is not one in which Africa must remain trapped in the conditions of its past, but one in which cultural identity and modern development can coexist.
Nevertheless, the book does not offer progress as a simple matter of changing leaders or acquiring technology. It invites readers to consider the intellectual independence, institutional responsibility, civic courage, and collective purpose necessary to make meaningful transformation possible.
Blending African cultural heritage, political critique, philosophical reflection, and dramatic storytelling, Beneath the African Sky: A Continent on Auction challenges readers to reconsider what independence means when economic dependence persists, what education means when knowledge fails to produce opportunity, what faith means when the vulnerable are exploited, and what leadership means when public office becomes a means of personal enrichment.
Above all, the novel speaks to young Africans who refuse to believe that their circumstances must determine their destiny. It asks them to move beyond complaint towards critical thought, beyond imitation towards innovation, and beyond the inherited limitations of society towards the difficult work of building something better.
This is more than a story about a village, a man, or a continent in crisis. It is a literary confrontation with the forces that shape African life and an invitation to imagine an Africa that reclaims ownership of its mind, its resources, its institutions, and its future.
Beneath the African Sky: A Continent on Auction is ultimately a call to awaken: to question what has been normalized, to confront what has been tolerated, and to recognize that the future of Africa cannot be secured by hope alone, but by the courage to think, the discipline to build, and the determination to act.

Where are True Parents?

Parenting
KShs700.00 KShs600.00
In Where are True Parents?, Augustine Rugutt explores ways in which parenting determines children’s behaviour and character beyond formative years. In doing so, he associates society’s changing value system, social pressures and use of technology with parenting outcomes, some of which are unpalatable in the eyes of society. He asks whether parents are truly aware of the impact of their conduct and action in shaping the future of their children. A fundamental question is whether parents truly know their children. On the other hand, do children really understand their parents? Such understanding is essential for a sound foundation for society. He makes the irrefutable case that poorly parented children are likely to be poor parents themselves. He challenges parents to understand that parenting is a God-given responsibility. As such, parents owe it to the Maker and the future of society to play their role as parents guided by teachings from the Bible. Step by step advice, most of which is informed by his work with Church, is invaluable for today’s parent.

The infant management concepts presented in this book have found favor with over two million parents and twice as many contented babies. On Becoming Babywise brings hope to the tired and bewildered parents looking for an alternative to sleepless nights and fussy babies. The Babywise Parent Directed Feeding concept has enough structure to bring security and order to your baby's world, yet enough flexibility to give mom freedom to respond to any need at any time. It teaches parents how to lovingly guide their baby's day rather than be guided or enslaved to the infant's unknown needs. The information contained within On Becoming Babywise is loaded with success. Comprehensive breast-feeding follow-up surveys spanning three countries, of mothers using the PDF method verify that as a result of the PDF concepts, 88% breast-feed, compared to the national average of only 54% (from the National Center for Health Statistics). Of these breast-feeding mothers, 80% of them breast-feed exclusively without a formula complement. And while 70% of our mothers are still breast-feeding after six months, the national average encourage to follow demand feeding without any guidelines is only 20%. The mean average time of breast-feeding for PDF moms is 33 1/2 weeks, well above the national average. Over 50% of PDF mothers extend their breast-feeding toward and well into the first year. Added to these statistics is another critical factor. The average breast-fed PDF baby sleeps continuously through night seven to eight hours between weeks seven and nine. Healthy sleep in infants is analogous to healthy growth and development. Find out for yourself why a world of parents and pediatricians utilize the concepts found in On Becoming Babywise.
