Description

Civil Wars in Africa, edited by Kelechi A. Kalu and George Klay Kieh, Jr., examines civil conflicts throughout various African countries. They argue that civil wars in Africa are by-products of the contradictions and crises engendered by the post-colonial state-building and nation-building projects in Africa. With few exceptions, the post-colonial states in Africa have failed to build societies that invest in the material well-being of their citizens; protect their political, civil, and other rights; promote accountability, transparency, the rule of law, judicial independence, and the holding of free and fair elections; and promote ethnic pluralism, tolerance, mutual respect, and peaceful co-existence, among others. In addition, the contributors show that the post-colonial states in Africa have been ruled by corrupt and autocratic leaders, who are obsessed with the maintenance of state power as the pathway to ensuring the private accumulation of wealth through sundry illegal means, including bribery, extortion, and theft of public funds. In sum, this volume addresses how the failure of the post-colonial African state to shepherd the process of building democratic societies based on the centrality of human security has led to the erosion of the legitimacy of the state and its custodians. Thus, once the contradictions and crises reached their crescendo, these post-colonial societies than implode into civil wars, even at the micro-level.

African Wildlife and Livelihoods: The Promise and Performance of Community Conservation by David Hulme, Marshall W. Murphree and Marshall Murphree

Books, African Interest
KShs2,800.00 KShs2,299.00
Brief Summary Recent conservation policies in Africa have followed three main principles: 1) that conservation should be community-based; 2) that things conserved should be managed to achieve both development and conservation goals; 3) that markets should play a role in shaping the incentives for conservation. The editors and contributors of this volume examine the success or otherwise of these practices in a number of different contexts across the continent.

This Life: Why Mortality Makes Us Free by Martin Hägglund

Books
KShs2,190.00 KShs1,890.00
'Any spiritual life must tremble with the anxiety of freedom, even in the most profound fulfillment of our aspirations...' Would Heaven be boring? Do you want to live forever? If this is all there is, what should we do with it? Join the Swedish philosopher Martin Hägglund on an original inquiry into the deepest questions of existence. To truly embrace the freedom that life grants us, Hägglund argues, we must rid ourselves of two delusions. On the one hand, all the great religions try to persuade us that immortality is just around the corner. This is a not only a lie: it couldn't help us if it was true. In reality our time in this world is the only thing of value we can ever possess, and its value depends on the fact that we must fight to keep it. Yet capitalism, our other spiritual enemy, constantly beguiles us to steal it. Via profound engagements with some of the greatest philosophers and theologians in history, including Aristotle, St Augustine, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Hegel and Marx, Hägglund takes aim at these two great adversaries, religion and capitalism, stripping away their many subtle illusions to return us to life itself in all its fragility. The final lesson is this: existence is a collective project. Everything is at stake in what we do together, and nothing outside it matters. In illuminating this profound truth, This Life announces itself as the first great work of existentialist philosophy of the 21st century.

Would you rather know a truth that makes you feel hopeless, or keep believing the lies? Beloved and bestselling author Colleen Hoover returns with the spellbinding story of two young people with devastating pasts who embark on a passionate, intriguing journey to discover the lessons of life, love, trust – and above all, the healing power that only truth can bring. Sky, a senior in high school, meets Dean Holder, a guy with a promiscuous reputation that rivals her own. From their very first encounter, he terrifies and captivates her. Something about him sparks memories of her deeply troubled past, a time she’s tried so hard to bury. Though Sky is determined to stay far away from him, his unwavering pursuit and enigmatic smile break down her defenses and the intensity of the bond between them grows. But the mysterious Holder has been keeping secrets of his own, and once they are revealed, Sky is changed forever and her ability to trust may be a casualty of the truth. Only by courageously facing the stark revelations can Sky and Holder hope to heal their emotional scars and find a way to live and love without boundaries. Teaching My Mother How To Give Birth by Warsan Shire

Books, African Interest
KShs1,400.00 KShs1,250.00
What elevates 'teaching my mother how to give birth', what gives the poems their disturbing brilliance, is Warsan Shire's ability to give simple, beautiful eloquence to the veiled world where sensuality lives in the dominant narrative of Islam; reclaiming the more nuanced truths of earlier times - as in Tayeb Salih's work - and translating to the realm of lyric the work of the likes of Nawal El Saadawi. As Rumi said, "Love will find its way through all languages on its own". In 'teaching my mother how to give birth', Warsan's debut pamphlet, we witness the unearthing of a poet who finds her way through all preconceptions to strike the heart directly. Warsan Shire is a Kenyan-born Somali poet and writer who is based in London. Born in 1988, she is an artist and activist who uses her work to document narratives of journey and trauma. Warsan has read her work internationally, including recent readings in South Africa, Italy and Germany, and her poetry has been translated into Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.

The Gen Z Manifesto by Chris Njehu

Politics & Government
KShs1,500.00 KShs1,200.00
Ever wonder what Kenya’s future would look like if the Gen Z movement could crystallise into an ideology pursued at the ballot? Could Kenya be where the Asian Tigers were in the 1960s, before they achieved their economic miracle? The Gen Z Manifesto takes a bold stab at answering these questions. Grounded in history, the book examines the forces that have shaped Africa’s past and draws lessons from ancient civilisations, including Kemet (Ancient Egypt), Mesopotamia, the Han Chinese Empire and the Mali Empire. It then turns to the Asian Tigers and other high-performing Asian economies to explore the policies and conditions behind their remarkable transformation. But The Gen Z Manifesto is more than an economic blueprint. It argues that strong families are the foundation of a strong society and calls for renewed efforts to create environments in which children can thrive under the guidance of both parents. At its political heart, the book revisits the birthplace of democracy in ancient Athens, where citizens gathered in the Agora to deliberate on matters affecting their society. Inspired by this tradition, it calls on Kenya’s Gen Z and Millennials to establish Citizens’ Deliberation Councils across the country—spaces where citizens can collectively shape Kenya’s social, political and economic agenda through consensus.
