Some curses do not die with those who summon them.
In 1896, in the hills of the Kingdom of Rwanda, Gahizi makes a desperate choice. With famine closing in and his young family on the edge of ruin, he binds himself to Gatera, a powerful cattle chief whose protection may be the difference between survival and extinction.
But Gatera’s house is one of grief, ambition, secrets, and powerful ancestors. Across a hundred years, both men’s descendants will carry the consequences of that choice.
We Are Safest Among Our People is a sweeping historical novel about the inheritance families carry, the borders others draw, and how far a family can go to survive in a world where belonging has no answer.

Captivating from the first page to the last. There is no sentence in this book that I did not read. You know how there are some books you skip entire passages because of how slowly the story is unfolding? Well, not with this one. The prose is so in tune with our African story telling it felt like I was watching a movie. Here is a book that schools you on one of the most devastating events to occur within the Continent(The Rwandan Genocide) and will answer all the questions you have (If you have ever wondered) about the never ending Congo crisis. I like that the author is carving a much needed niche of educating about African issues in such a digestible manner seeing that his first book ‘Once, There Was A Star’ was on Somalia. I love a good story, that is also educative and informative and this book, is exactly that.

From the highlands of Rwanda to the farm lands of Congo, a very interesting work of fiction and a vivid reminder that our safe spaces are among our own people, culture, religion and borders.
The transition from staunch cultural beliefs of the Hutu and Tutsi to the white man’s religion and disruption of economic activities shows the price we pay when we abandon our ways; whether willingly or forced.
Gahazi’s household is one of a kind. He binds himself to a Tutsi in the hope of protection against his mother’s and wife’s will – a move of deception that gets him and his wife killed in the presence of their child and mother.
From time to time, his son Karenzi tries to rebel against the oppressors, but sometimes, winning against powerful regimes and feared enemies takes more than iron will and the willingness to stand alone!
The journey of Banyarwanda to Congo in search of a better life is a clear demonstration of a community determined to thrive in a world that clearly does not offer them the option to do so.
Their settling into Congo land is a move of courage but for some, the dream is cut short by the Congolese who are determined to occupy their land. Many killings follow – blood is shed as Congolese fight to reclaim their land, space and dignity.
Throughout the book, instances of deception and abuse are evident and only the less fortunate in the society are at the receiving end – serving as a constant reminder that WE ARE SAFEST AMONG OUR PEOPLE.
The author presents a thoroughly researched piece of literature about Africans’ fight against a terrifying destiny; which is both entertaining and enlightening!
