The Game Of Sweet Words: A story of Power, Promises and The People by Festus Korir

Books
Rated 4.11 out of 5
KShs999.00
  • The Game of Sweet Words by Festus Korir is not just a book. It reveals a harsh truth about politics that is often hidden in deception. It shows how leaders excel at delivering charming speeches. They exchange empty promises for power, while the poor suffer from those lies. Behind the applause is betrayal, behind the smiles is hunger, and behind the campaigns is a future quietly taken away. This book bravely uncovers the price of trusting words that sound sweet but drain a nation.

Augustinian Friendship by Fred Wekesa

Religion & Spiritual
KShs450.00 KShs400.00
Discover what kind of friend are you and what kind of friends you have. At the beginning chapters in this book, a summarized biography on Saint Augustine, his works and some spiritual heritages have been discussed. The most important being his understanding on friendship. However, an overview of friendship also from other points of views has been briefly looked at like biblical, philosophical and cultural understanding on friendship. The concept of friendship exists in all cultures but with different variations on how it is exercised and the levels of friendships. According to Augustine’s experiences, friends can be seen in three basic frameworks which are public, social and intimate friendship. Majority of friends are on the public level because interactions during events are non-stop in life. Augustine redefined friendship by using ciceronian terms such as agreement of things divine and human with mutual goodwill and love as depicting true friendship. Friendship is one of the methods that Augustine used to evangelize and win converts. Friendship is needed in all aspects of our lives as discussed in the previous chapters. It is an essential means to form a community and also to live in the community. However, there are challenges in living this friendship but through reconciliation and forgiveness, one has to bear the burden of one another because a burden shared is lighter when carried. In the Modern days, majority of people prefer Hybrid friendship that is both offline and online friendships. However, online friendship should be taken as a means to meet face to face and not as never to meet. Finally, having Friends of St. Augustine in our Augustinian parish communities and other parishes is basically a living testimony of Augustinian spiritualities. By establishing Friends of Saint Augustine groups in different parishes, that will create a way or a bridge or a plate in which Augustinians are able to share their Spiritual richness with Christian faithful alongside preaching or giving retreats hence living community life. Friendship breaks all barriers to construct a ladder of sharing, communion life, love, peace and above all fraternal life towards God.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

Books, Romances & Thrillers
KShs1,690.00 KShs1,590.00
Wuthering Heights is a wild, passionate story of the intense and almost demonic love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, a foundling adopted by Catherine's father. After Mr Earnshaw's death, Heathcliff is bullied and humiliated by Catherine's brother Hindley and wrongly believing that his love for Catherine is not reciprocated, leaves Wuthering Heights, only to return years later as a wealthy and polished man. He proceeds to exact a terrible revenge for his former miseries. The action of the story is chaotic and unremittingly violent, but the accomplished handling of a complex structure, the evocative descriptions of the lonely moorland setting and the poetic grandeur of vision combine to make this unique novel a masterpiece of English literature.

Anxious People by Fredrik Backman

Books, Fiction and Non Fiction
KShs2,200.00 KShs1,890.00
Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree on anything, from where they want to live to how they met in the first place. Add to the mix an eighty-seven-year-old woman who has lived long enough not to be afraid of someone waving a gun in her face, a flustered but still-ready-to-make-a-deal real estate agent, and a mystery man who has locked himself in the apartment’s only bathroom, and you’ve got the worst group of hostages in the world. Each of them carries a lifetime of grievances, hurts, secrets, and passions that are ready to boil over. None of them is entirely who they appear to be. And all of them—the bank robber included—desperately crave some sort of rescue. As the authorities and the media surround the premises these reluctant allies will reveal surprising truths about themselves and set in motion a chain of events so unexpected that even they can hardly explain what happens next. Rich with Fredrik Backman’s “pitch-perfect dialogue and an unparalleled understanding of human nature” (Shelf Awareness), Anxious People is an ingeniously constructed story about the enduring power of friendship, forgiveness, and hope—the things that save us, even in the most anxious times.

Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens

Books, Fiction and Non Fiction
KShs1,200.00 KShs990.00
Brief Summary The story of the orphan Oliver, who runs away from the workhouse only to be taken in by a den of thieves, shocked readers when it was first published. Dickens's tale of childhood innocence beset by evil depicts the dark criminal underworld of a London peopled by vivid and memorable characters — the arch-villain Fagin, the artful Dodger, the menacing Bill Sikes and the prostitute Nancy. Combining elements of Gothic Romance, the Newgate Novel and popular melodrama, in Oliver Twist Dickens created an entirely new kind of fiction, scathing in its indictment of a cruel society, and pervaded by an unforgettable sense of threat and mystery. This is the first critical edition to use the serial text of 1837-9, presenting Oliver Twist as it appeared to its earliest readers. It includes Dickens's 1841 introduction and 1850 preface, the original illustrations and a glossary of contemporary slang.
