SYNOPSIS:
Juma is a bright boy in Class 8 at Dudi Junior School. He is top 5 in class, loves football, and dreams of joining Kanga High School. His good friends are Otis (loves books) and Achieng (loves science) – they study together under the mango tree.
One Monday, three new boys from town join Class 8 – Brian, Kevin and Mark. They have expensive phones, cool haircuts, speak sheng, and seem like the “cool guys.” They tell Juma: “Why walk with those bookworms? Come with us.”
Juma feels special. He wants to belong. He leaves his real friends and follows the cool crowd behind the latrines to watch videos instead of revising.
Slowly, small compromises start:
Day 1: Skip prep to play PlayStation
Day 2: Lie that he is sick to leave school early
Day 3: Watch rude videos to fit in
Day 4: Use his lunch money KSh 50 to buy mandazi for them
Mama notices: “Where are Otis and Achieng? Who are these new boys?”
Grades drop: From position 5 to 12 to 19 in one month.
Then comes THE TEST: End term Agriculture exam is next week. Brian says: “We have exam paper photo from staffroom. You are clever, trusted by teachers. You go take photo, no one suspects you. If you don’t, you are not our friend.”
Fear of being alone is stronger than conscience. Juma whispers: “Okay… just this once…”
Saturday 6am, staffroom door open, envelope “CLASS 8 AGRICULTURE EXAM – DO NOT OPEN” on Teacher Wafula’s table. Hands shaking, Juma takes photos. Click click click.
Monday exam – Teacher notices torn envelope. Sees Kevin writing answers word-for-word, even with teacher’s spelling mistake! Principal called. Kevin confesses: “Juma brought photos.”
Consequences: 2 weeks suspension, ZERO in Agriculture, manual work slashing compound, parents called – shame.
During suspension, Brian, Kevin, Mark never call. They have new cool boy. Wrong crowd used him and left him.
But Otis and Achieng walk 1km in hot sun to bring him notes: “Real friends don’t leave when you are in trouble. Real friends tell truth even when it hurts.”
Juma returns humble, apologizes, leaves wrong crowd, works hard. Grades come back: 19 to 12 to 8 to 4. Selected to Kanga High School.
At graduation speech: “Wrong crowd claps when you fall. Right crowd lifts you when you fall. Show me your friends and I show you your future.”
