Bildad Kaggia and the Struggle for Socialism in Kenya, 1921 – 2005. Edited by Shiraz Durrani And Brian Mathenge

Books, African Interest
KShs2,000.00
"Since the days of my primary school, I have always been a fighter," said Bildad Kaggia. Like Makhan Singh and Pio Gama Pinto, Bildad Kaggia struggled against imperialism in all its phases: capitalism, colonialism and neo-colonialism, first gainst British colonialism, then against the comprador government of lom enyatta imposed by imperialism on the working people of Keny While many gave up the struggle at independence and joined Kenyatta in looting the land and condemning workers and peasants to landlessness and poverty, Bildad Kaggia preferred to continue the struggle and live the life of a peasant. That example remains to this day for the post-independence generations. Kaggia was active in Mau Mau, in the trade union movement, in writing and publishing. He added a cultural and religious aspect to his struggle. He ended up in colonial detention but refused to give up the struggle for the aims of Mau Mau. He was a member of its Central Committee. Imperialism has used the comprador governments to distort and hide Kaggia's contribution to the struggle for the liberation of Kenya. They prevented the full publication of his autobiography which appeared as Roots of Freedom, but stopped the story in 1963, removing his struggle against the comprador government. This gap was finally filled in 2012 with the publication of The Struggle for Freedom and Justice. March 7, 2026 marked the 21st anniversary of Bildad Kaggia's death. We publish a collection of essays to mark his life and record his contribution to the liberation of Kenya. His clear ideological stand and actions to achieve his vision of a Kenya with freedom and justice for working people is what scared imperialism and the comprador governments. Generations born after independence need his history to support their own struggles against capitalism and imperialism.

Treason by Miguna Miguna

Books, African Interest
Rated 5.00 out of 5
KShs3,299.00 KShs2,999.00
Brief summary Treason: the case against tyrants and renegades This is a bold, candid and beautifully written book. Miguna presents vivid details of behind the scenes discussions that preceded the swearing in ceremony of January 30, 2018. The dialogues are verbatim. They are meticulously recorded. The feelings are raw and searing. The logic and analysis in treason are robust. "It was sad that the cancer of betrayal was ferociously attacking our liberations movement before the ink I had used to sign the oath of office on. The people’s president had dried ….. I am relieved, however, that my experiences would not go untold. That the future generations now have a permanent record of some of the most atrocious violations of human rights in modern history that have been committed against a Kenyan born citizen by the state. If I were to die today, history would record that my death would have been caused by the cancer of betrayal by the home guards and renegades. But I would die on my feet a happy man, with the full knowledge that the ideas, aspirations, dreams and values for which I have dedicated my life, will, never die and that in the end and no matter how long it takes, these ideals and values will ultimately triumph over evil, injustice and wrongs that have been inflicted upon me and generations of Kenyans before me,” Miguna writes, eventually, facts and the truth shall prevail over falsehoods, deception and the oppressive machinations of the neocolonial agents of imperialism. That means my commitment and hope. Its also my burning dream.

Gendering Ethnicity in African Womens Lives

Books, African Interest
KShs13,999.00 KShs13,300.00
Brief Summary Do African men and women think about and act out their ethnicity in different ways? Most studies of ethnicity in Africa consider men’s experiences, but rarely have scholars examined whether women have the same idea of what it means to be, for example, Igbo or Tswana or Kikuyu. Or, studies have invoked the adage "women have no tribe” to indicate a woman’s loss of ethnicity as she marries into her husband’s community. This volume engages directly the issue of women’s ethnicity and makes stimulating contributions to debates about how and why women’s movements have a unifying role in African political organization and peace movements. Drawing on extensive field research in many different regions of Africa, the contributors demonstrate in their essays that women do make choices about the forms of ethnicity they embrace, creating alternatives to male-centered definitions—in some cases rejecting a specific ethnic identity in favor of an interethnic alliance, in others reinterpreting the meaning of ethnicity within gendered domains, and in others performing ethnic power in gendered ways. Their analysis helps explain why African women may be more likely to champion interethnic political movements while men often promote an ethnicity based on martial masculinity. Bringing together anthropologists, historians, linguists, and political scientists, Gendering Ethnicity in African Women’s Lives offers a diverse and timely look at a neglected but important topic. Paperback features over fifty pages of bonus materials, including a sneak peek of Insurgent, an author Q&A, a discussion guide, a Divergent playlist, faction manifestos, and more! In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself. During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles alongside her fellow initiates to live out the choice they have made. Together they must undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris must determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers unrest and growing conflict that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her. Veronica Roth is the New York Times bestselling author of Divergent, the first in a trilogy of dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance."

Through My African Eyes by Jeff Koinange

Books, African Interest
Rated 5.00 out of 5
KShs3,890.00 KShs3,500.00
"Through My African Eyes!” is a concise narrative covering some of the major players in 20th century African politics. The book is rich with insights into the personal and intellectual underpinnings of many historical events in Africa. Chronicles of some pretty interesting Africans from warlords, soldiers, victims and politicians lend insight into Jeff’s celebrated journalistic style. Through his eyes we are made to understand the role of journalist’s as binders of our social fabric. "Through My African Eyes” is very informative and quite humorous, utilizing a modern quick precise narrative style. He is able to describe complex global geopolitical issues with incisive analysis. The book surf’s one through the experience with speed and historical accuracy. We see the visual the words impart, rather than being stuck in prose. The best part is being able to walk the journey informed by a largely Kenyan perspective. Jeff outlines clearly how biased reportage can splinter any society and promote its disintegration by pandering to people’s lowest instincts. The narrative draws out lesser-known aspects of his life. Jeff’s unblinking examination of his grandfather’s life is historically illuminating and serves as a symbolic bridge between the beginning and the end of colonialism. Jeff is the first African ever to win a Television Emmy and a George Foster Peabody. He merited the Vernon Jarrett Award as well as the prestigious! ‘Prix Bayeux’ for reportage that arrested global crises."
