Written in Greek, without any intention of publication, by the only Roman emperor who was also a philosopher, the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius (AD 121-180) offer a remarkable series of challenging spiritual reflections and exercises developed as the emperor struggled to understand himself and make sense of the universe.

Ranging from doubt and despair to conviction and exaltation, they cover such diverse topics as the nature of moral virtue, human rationality, divine providence, and Marcus’ own emotions.

But while the Meditations were composed to provide personal consolation and encouragement, in developing his beliefs Marcus Aurelius also created one of the greatest of all works of philosophy: a timeless collection of extended meditations and short aphorisms that has been consulted and admired by statesmen, thinkers and readers through the centuries.

    Rated 5 out of 5

Meditations was suggested to me by Bulle after describing to him the sort of content I was interested in.

Although Meditations focused on exactly the subjects I was looking for, I found that the book wasn’t an easy read for me and required a re-read but it was well worthwhile with great life lessons on the mind and dealing with the shortcomings of others.

It’s definitely one to keep and refer to constantly.

Tourism Development in Kenya Critical Issues Challenges and Alternatives in the New Millennium

Books, African Interest
KShs1,299.00 KShs1,235.00
Brief Summary Tourism, which was once Kenya’s top foreign exchange earner, has suffered a big slum in the past decade. Various reasons can be given for this. The post-election violence witnessed in 2007, lack of investment in the sector, poaching and, more recently, security challenges posed by the unending terrorist attacks in the country, are all sending the development of the sector in the wrong direction. It was time someone took a critical look at the industry. The book Tourism Development of Kenya: Critical Issues, Challenges & Alternatives in the New Millennium comes at a time when everyone is looking for solutions for the ailing sector. Authored by Prof John Akama and published by East Africa Educational Publishers, the book covers various perspectives on tourism development in Kenya. It is a synthesis and critical analysis of economic, social, political, cultural and environmental issues that affect the development of tourism in Kenya and other African countries. Ten Commandments of Financial Happiness

Books, Business
KShs1,295.00 KShs1,231.00
Brief Summary Millions of Americans have turned to Jean Chatzky for financial advice, thanks to her weekly appearances on NBC's Today and her column in Money magazine. Now, in The Ten Commandments of Financial Happiness (published in hardcover as You Don't Have to Be Rich), she analyzes the results of a unique survey in which she questioned 1,500 Americans about their financial attitudes and behaviors. She looks at how much money people actually do need to guarantee a happy, comfortable life. And gets down to the nitty-gritty, isolating behaviors that—if adopted—can significantly improve a life. The results of this proprietary survey—conducted with the help of the Roper Center—are remarkable. Chatzky found that while a certain amount of money buys comfort, money can't make you happy—at least not in the way most people believe it can. But it can make you miserable, if you're managing it wrong. That's why it's time to make a change. In her frank, engaging style, Chatzky explains how to "own your money" to create a happy and comfortable life. She outlines the financial habits of happy people and shows how anyone can be a part of this group, no matter what they earn. Filled with fresh insights and real life examples, The Ten Commandments of Financial Happiness reaffirms that finances don't have to be a source of stress and that living within your means can be extremely rewarding. Through My African Eyes by Jeff Koinange

Books, African Interest
Rated 5.00 out of 5
KShs3,890.00 KShs3,500.00
"Through My African Eyes!” is a concise narrative covering some of the major players in 20th century African politics. The book is rich with insights into the personal and intellectual underpinnings of many historical events in Africa. Chronicles of some pretty interesting Africans from warlords, soldiers, victims and politicians lend insight into Jeff’s celebrated journalistic style. Through his eyes we are made to understand the role of journalist’s as binders of our social fabric. "Through My African Eyes” is very informative and quite humorous, utilizing a modern quick precise narrative style. He is able to describe complex global geopolitical issues with incisive analysis. The book surf’s one through the experience with speed and historical accuracy. We see the visual the words impart, rather than being stuck in prose. The best part is being able to walk the journey informed by a largely Kenyan perspective. Jeff outlines clearly how biased reportage can splinter any society and promote its disintegration by pandering to people’s lowest instincts. The narrative draws out lesser-known aspects of his life. Jeff’s unblinking examination of his grandfather’s life is historically illuminating and serves as a symbolic bridge between the beginning and the end of colonialism. Jeff is the first African ever to win a Television Emmy and a George Foster Peabody. He merited the Vernon Jarrett Award as well as the prestigious! ‘Prix Bayeux’ for reportage that arrested global crises."
