This story follows a child who learns that cultural identity is portable. You
can leave your village, cross borders, enter unfamiliar spaces—and still carry
your home within you. This is the Ubuntu philosophy in action: “I am because we
are,” but also, “We are because I remember.”

In an era where African children increasingly navigate between traditional
spaces and global ones, this story offers a bridge. It says: You do not have to
choose between worlds. You can be a child of the village and a citizen of the
world, because the drumbeat travels with you.

May this story find its way into classrooms from Lagos to Nairobi, from
Kumasi to Kinshasa—and may every child who reads it hear their own rhythm more
clearly.

Description

Dear Reader,

I wrote this story because I once stood in a crowded marketplace in Accra,

Ghana, and heard a rhythm that made my chest ache with memory. I was born in

East Africa, but that drumbeat spoke to something older than geography—it spoke

to belonging itself.

Across West Africa, the djembe drum is not merely an instrument. It is a voice.

In the Bambara language of Mali, “djembe” comes from the phrase “Anke djé, anke

bé”—”everyone gather together in peace.” This drum has called communities to

marriage, to mourning, to harvest, and to war for over 800 years. But its

greatest power is this: it teaches us that rhythm is not something we hear. It

is something we are.

Kumasi to Kinshasa—and may every child who reads it hear their own rhythm more

clearly.

With hope and rhythm,

Cassan Japeth

AFRO-CENTRIC FUTURES .The Education of Zuri Odhiambo

International Bestsellers
KShs999.00 KShs800.00
She built it to teach. They used it to watch. At twenty-three, Zuri Odhiambo was the prodigy of the tech world, a brilliant Kenyan coder who created Mwalimu—an open-source AI tutor designed to bring education to the most remote corners of the continent. She believed a tool built with good intentions could only ever be used for good. She was wrong. Now twenty-four and disillusioned, Zuri walks away from a high-stakes Silicon Valley career and returns to her grandmother’s village on the shores of Lake Victoria. But the home she remembers is gone. In its place is the Lake Belt Lithium Project, a massive industrial mine fueling the global green energy revolution. As the mine lights turn the lake into mercury every night at 6:47 PM, Zuri discovers a devastating truth: her beautiful code has been weaponized. Mwalimu is no longer a teacher; it is a predictive policing system for the Ministry of Interior, used to flag "at-risk" youth and neutralize resistance before it even begins. Caught between a mentor who sold her soul to military contractors and a childhood love who is now the leader of the Mau Mau Digital Resistance, Zuri must navigate a landscape where data is the new gold and attention is the new territory. AFRO-CENTRIC FUTURES is a fierce, sensual, and unsparing techno-thriller about the "new scramble for Africa." It is the story of a young woman who must learn to unbuild what she made, to resist without becoming the enemy, and to discover that the things worth building are not the things that scale—but the things that hold. ________________________________________ Why Read Afro-Centric Futures? • A Gripping Techno-Thriller: Follow Zuri’s high-stakes journey across twelve months and twelve Swahili proverbs as she attempts to dismantle her own creation. • Timely Themes: An exploration of the ethical cost of "green energy," the colonizing power of algorithms, and the struggle for data sovereignty. • Rich Cultural Depth: A narrative rooted in the landscape of Lake Victoria, blending traditional wisdom with a pulse-pounding political plot.

Nairobi does not wait for anyone. When Cassan and Mulwa move into a tiny room above garages along Jogoo Road, they arrive with little more than ambition, street instincts, and a stubborn belief that tomorrow must be better than today. Surrounded by the chaos of matatus, hustlers, nightlife, corrupt deals, music culture, flooded streets, and endless survival battles, the two young men quickly discover that Nairobi is both a dream factory and a dangerous battlefield. By day, they chase jobs that never call back. By night, they hustle through the city selling phone covers, filming underground music videos, navigating risky friendships, and trying to stay alive in a place where one wrong decision can destroy everything. But as opportunities begin to appear, so do temptations. Money changes people. Power attracts danger. And the city tests every weakness. Set against the raw, electric energy of modern Nairobi, JOGOO DREAMS is a gripping coming-of-age urban adventure about brotherhood, resilience, ambition, betrayal, creativity, and survival in one of Africa’s fastest-moving cities. UNMASKED: The High Achiever’s Blueprint Deconstructing the Psychology of Exceptional Performance

Personal Growth and Development
KShs999.00 KShs930.00

The first movement of UNMASKED is a clinical descent into the structural integrity of your current life. We begin with a brutal premise: Most high achievers are living in a "furnished emptiness." You have built a skyscraper of success on a foundation of sand. This section introduces the Performance Pyramid, a five-level diagnostic framework that maps the exact coordinates of your achievement-identity fusion. We don't just ask what you have achieved; we ask why you had to achieve it to feel safe.

The core of this archaeology is identifying the Success Paradox. You have spent years believing that the next milestone would provide the "peace" or "arrival" you crave, only to find that each peak reveals a higher, more exhausting mountain. This isn't a failure of effort; it is a failure of Identity Infrastructure. We use the Achievement-Identity Fusion Scale (AIFS) to quantify how much of your psychological oxygen is currently rented from external validation. This section forces a "Recognition Commitment"—an acknowledgment that your current operating system is designed for output, not for the human being responsible for that output.

The Challenge for Africa by Wangari Maathai

Books, African Interest
KShs1,900.00 KShs1,790.00
Brief Summary Wangari Maathai, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and founder of the Green Belt Movement, offers a refreshingly unique perspective on the challenges facing Africa, even as she calls for a moral revolution among Africans themselves, who, she argues, are culturally deracinated, adrift between worlds. The troubles of Africa today are severe and wide-ranging. Yet what we see of them in the media, more often than not, are tableaux vivantes connoting poverty, dependence, and desperation. Wangari Maathai presents a different vision, informed by her three decades as an environmental activist and campaigner for democracy. She illuminates the complex and dynamic nature of the continent, and offers "hardheaded hope” and "realistic options” for change and improvement. With clarity of expression, Maathai analyzes the most egregious "bottlenecks to development in Africa,” occurring at the international, national, and individual levels–cultural upheaval and enduring poverty among them–and deftly describes what Africans can and need to do for themselves, stressing all the while responsibility and accountability.Impassioned and empathetic, The Challenge for Africa is a book of immense importance. Unbowed by Wangari Maathai

Books, African Interest
Rated 5.00 out of 5
KShs2,500.00 KShs2,000.00
Born in a rural Kenyan village in 1940, Wangari Maathai was already an iconoclast as a child, determined to get an education even though most African girls then were uneducated. In her remarkable and inspiring autobiography, she tells of her studies with Catholic missionaries, earning bachelors and master's degrees in the United States, and becoming the first woman both to earn a PhD and to head a university department in Kenya. She tells of her numerous run-ins with the brutal government of Daniel arap Moi and of the political and personal reasons that compelled her, in 1977, to establish the Green Belt Movement, which spread from Kenya across Africa, and which helps restore indigenous forests while assisting rural women by paying them to plant trees in their villages. Maathai's extraordinary courage and determination helped transform Kenya's government into the democracy in which she now serves as Deputy Minister for the Environment and Natural Resources and as a Member of Parliament. Eventually her achievement was internationally recognized in the Nobel Peace Prize, awarded in recognition of her 'contribution to sustainable development, human rights, and peace'. In Unbowed, we are in the presence of a hugely charismatic yet humble woman whose remarkable story carries with it an inspiring message of hope. Hers is an extraordinary story, spanning different worlds and changing times, and revealing what the courage, determination, tenacity and humour of one good woman can achieve; how as small a thing as planting a seedling and watering it can made all the difference in the world.

Brief Summary Immaculee Ilibagiza grew up in a country she loved, surrounded by a family she cherished. But in 1994 her idyllic world was ripped apart as Rwanda descended into a bloody genocide. Immaculee’s family was brutally murdered during a killing spree that lasted three months and claimed the lives of nearly a million Rwandans. Incredibly, Immaculee survived the slaughter. For 91 days, she and seven other women huddled silently together in the cramped bathroom of a local pastor while hundreds of machete-wielding killers hunted for them. It was during those endless hours of unspeakable terror that Immaculee discovered the power of prayer, eventually shedding her fear of death and forging a profound and lasting relationship with God. She emerged from her bathroom hideout having discovered the meaning of truly unconditional love—a love so strong she was able seek out and forgive her family’s killers. Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

Books, African Interest
KShs1,000.00 KShs890.00
THINGS FALL APART tells two overlapping, intertwining stories, both of which center around Okonkwo, a "strong man” of an Ibo village in Nigeria. The first of these stories traces Okonkwo's fall from grace with the tribal world in which he lives, and in its classical purity of line and economical beauty it provides us with a powerful fable about the immemorial conflict between the individual and society. The second story, which is as modern as the first is ancient, and which elevates the book to a tragic plane, concerns the clash of cultures and the destruction of Okonkwo's world through the arrival of aggressive, proselytizing European missionaries. These twin dramas are perfectly harmonized, and they are modulated by an awareness capable of encompassing at once the life of nature, human history, and the mysterious compulsions of the soul. THINGS FALL APART is the most illuminating and permanent monument we have to the modern African experience as seen from within. "

Born in Africa

Africa does not give up its secrets easily. Buried there lie answers about the origins of humankind. After a century of investigation, scientists have transformed our understanding about the beginnings of human life. But vital clues still remain hidden. In Born in Africa, Martin Meredith follows the trail of discoveries about human origins made by scientists over the last hundred years, recounting their intense rivalry, personal feuds, and fierce controversies as well as their feats of skill and endurance. The results have been momentous. Scientists have identified more than twenty species of extinct humans. They have firmly established Africa as the birthplace not only of humankind but also of modern humans. They have revealed how early technology, language ability, and artistic endeavour all originated in Africa; and they have shown how small groups of Africans spread out from Africa in an exodus sixty thousand years ago to populate the rest of the world. Hostage

Books, African Interest
KShs1,399.00 KShs1,330.00
On October 23, 2009, British couple Paul and Rachel Chandler were kidnapped from their sailing boat off the archipelago of the Seychelles. Naval forces and search rescue centres did not swing into full action until the story broke on October 27 when Somalis informed the media that the couple were in their hands. The yacht, S/Y Lynn Rival, was found the next day by naval forces, abandoned off the Central Somali Coast. After the attack, Paul and Rachel were taken first onto a previously hijacked merchant ship, the MV Kota Wajar, and then onto land near Ceel Huur, north of Harardheere on the coast of Somalia. The couple were released, over a year later, on November 14, 2010, after a reported $800,000 ransom was paid. In this remarkable book, Paul and Rachel Chandler exclusively recount their ordeal, revealing the entire breathtaking, inspiring and poignant story behind the dramatic headlines. At the heart of their survival was their unshakable belief in each other and their determination to survive against all the odds, making Hostage an unlikely love story, in which death, at times, seemed preferable to being separated. Crisis In The Horn of Africa

Books, African Interest
KShs1,495.00 KShs1,421.00
The most dangerous corner of Africa is its north-east corner where instability reigns and terrorism thrives on the antagonisms of all of its governments. This region, comprising Ethiopia, Sudan and now South Sudan, Somalia, Djibouti and Eritrea, and stretching to include Kenya and Uganda, is a pivotal geopolitical pressure point in world politics. It stands at the hinge of Africa and the Middle East. It was of vital interest to the superpowers during the Cold War and remains, in the post-Cold War period, a key area in international relations and a major source of mineral wealth, while its sufferings have been described as a scar on the conscience of humanity. But seemingly endemic political chaos, failed states, terrorism and international piracy have dealt a death blow to the ambitions of the US and her allies in the international community to further a New World Order of liberal democracy. Peter Woodward's book is essential reading for Africa and international relations specialists, including policy planners." ISBN:2147483647 Author:Peter Woodward

Dreams from My Father by Barack Obama

Books, African Interest
KShs2,000.00 KShs1,890.00
Nine years before the Senate campaign that made him one of the most influential and compelling voices in American politics, Barack Obama published this lyrical, unsentimental, and powerfully affecting memoir, which became a #1 New York Times bestseller when it was reissued in 2004. Dreams from My Father tells the story of Obama’s struggle to understand the forces that shaped him as the son of a black African father and white American mother—a struggle that takes him from the American heartland to the ancestral home of his great-aunt in the tiny African village of Alego. Obama opens his story in New York, where he hears that his father—a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man—has died in a car accident. The news triggers a chain of memories as Barack retraces his family’s unusual history: the migration of his mother’s family from small-town Kansas to the Hawaiian islands; the love that develops between his mother and a promising young Kenyan student, a love nurtured by youthful innocence and the integrationist spirit of the early sixties; his father’s departure from Hawaii when Barack was two, as the realities of race and power reassert themselves; and Barack’s own awakening to the fears and doubts that exist not just between the larger black and white worlds but within himself. Propelled by a desire to understand both the forces that shaped him and his father’s legacy, Barack moves to Chicago to work as a community organizer. There, against the backdrop of tumultuous political and racial conflict, he works to turn back the mounting despair of the inner city. His story becomes one with those of the people he works with as he learns about the value of community, the necessity of healing old wounds, and the possibility of faith in the midst of adversity. Barack’s journey comes full circle in Kenya, where he finally meets the African side of his family and confronts the bitter truth of his father’s life. Traveling through a country racked by brutal poverty and tribal conflict, but whose people are sustained by a spirit of endurance and hope, Barack discovers that he is inescapably bound to brothers and sisters living an ocean away—and that by embracing their common struggles he can finally reconcile his divided inheritance. A searching meditation on the meaning of identity in America, Dreams from My Father might be the most revealing portrait we have of a major American leader—a man who is playing, and will play, an increasingly prominent role in healing a fractious and fragmented nation."

Keeping Hope Alive

KShs3,000.00 KShs2,750.00
The moving memoir of one brave woman who, along with her daughters, has kept 90,000 of her fellow citizens safe, healthy, and educated for over 20 years in Somalia. Dr. Hawa Abdi, "the Mother Teresa of Somalia" and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, is the founder of a massive camp for internally displaced people located a few miles from war-torn Mogadishu, Somalia. Since 1991, when the Somali government collapsed, famine struck, and aid groups fled, she has dedicated herself to providing help for people whose lives have been shattered by violence and poverty. She turned her 1300 acres of farmland into a camp that has numbered up to 90,000 displaced people, ignoring the clan lines that have often served to divide the country. She inspired her daughters, Deqo and Amina, to become doctors. Together, they have saved tens of thousands of lives in her hospital, while providing an education to hundreds of displaced children. In 2010, Dr. Abdi was kidnapped by radical insurgents, who also destroyed much of her hospital, simply because she was a woman. She, along with media pressure, convinced the rebels to let her go, and she demanded and received a written apology.Dr. Abdi's story of incomprehensible bravery and perseverance will inspire readers everywhere. Negro with a Hat by Colin Grant

Books, African Interest
KShs2,000.00 KShs1,890.00
Brief Summary New in paperback, this groundbreaking biography captures the full sweep and epic dimensions of Marcus Garvey's life, the dazzling triumphs and the dreary exile. As Grant shows, Garvey was a man of contradictions: a self-educated, poetry-writing aesthete and unabashed propagandist, an admirer of Lenin, and a dandy given to elaborate public displays. Above all, he was a shrewd promoter whose use of pageantry evoked a lost African civilization and fired the imagination of his followers. Negro With a Hat restores Garvey to his place as one of the founders of black nationalism and a key figure of the 20th century. "A searching, vivid, and (as the title suggests) complex account of Garvey's short but consequential life." -Steve Hahn, The New Republic "The story of Marcus Garvey, the charismatic and tireless black leader who had a meteoric rise and fall in the late 1910s and early '20s, makes for enthralling reading, and Garvey has found an engaging and objective biographer in Colin Grant.... Grant's book is not all politics, ideology, money and lawsuits. It is also an engrossing social history.... Negro With a Hat is an achievement on a scale Garvey might have appreciated." The Snows of Kilimanjaro

KShs855.00 KShs813.00
The ideal introduction to the genius of Ernest Hemingway, "The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories" contains ten of Hemingway's most acclaimed and popular works of short fiction. Selected from "Winner Take Nothing, Men Without Women, " and "The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories. This collection includes "The Killers," the first of Hemingway's mature stories to be accepted by an American periodical; the autobiographical "Fathers and Sons," which alludes, for the first time in Hemingway's career, to his father's suicide; "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," a "brilliant fusion of personal observation, hearsay and invention," wrote Hemingway's biographer, Carlos Baker; and the title story itself, of which Hemingway said: "I put all the true stuff in," with enough material, he boasted, to fill four novels. Beautiful in their simplicity, startling in their originality, and unsurpassed in their craftsmanship, the stories in this volume highlight one of America's master storytellers at the top of his form. Dead Aid by Dambisa Moyo

Books, African Interest
KShs2,000.00 KShs1,790.00
In Dead Aid, Dambisa Moyo describes the state of postwar development policy in Africa today and unflinchingly confronts one of the greatest myths of our time: that billions of dollars in aid sent from wealthy countries to developing African nations has helped to reduce poverty and increase growth. In fact, poverty levels continue to escalate and growth rates have steadily declined—and millions continue to suffer. Provocatively drawing a sharp contrast between African countries that have rejected the aid route and prospered and others that have become aid-dependent and seen poverty increase, Moyo illuminates the way in which overreliance on aid has trapped developing nations in a vicious circle of aid dependency, corruption, market distortion, and further poverty, leaving them with nothing but the "need” for more aid. Debunking the current model of international aid promoted by both Hollywood celebrities and policy makers, Moyo offers a bold new road map for financing development of the world’s poorest countries that guarantees economic growth and a significant decline in poverty—without reliance on foreign aid or aid-related assistance.Dead Aid is an unsettling yet optimistic work, a powerful challenge to the assumptions and arguments that support a profoundly misguided development policy in Africa. And it is a clarion call to a new, more hopeful vision of how to address the desperate poverty that plagues millions.

Also included is The Trouble with Nigeria, Achebe's searing outpouring of his frustrations with his country. GREAT IDEAS. Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have transformed the way we see ourselves - and each other. They have inspired debate, dissent, war and revolution. They have enlightened, outraged, provoked and comforted.
