Zions Children is an African family drama that highlights the crisis of gender roles in land ownership that precipitated the adoption of the land inheritance law allowing women to inherit land, centering the fragility of economic systems among the Kenyan/African modern nuclear family, where the surviving wife and children of the Mwela family find themselves victims of weaponized culture by their predatory inlaw.

The family struggles for survival against the backdrop of rural vs urban identity politics. Land has been such a contentious issue for Africans and the Carribean Diaspora. Given the contentious cardinal sin of land theft during colonial times, its self defeating that land theft happens among African and black diaspora communities, perpetrated by their own.

Zion’s Children explores the rural-urban dissasociative cultural rift among African amd Black diaspora communities through the generational trauma that impacts the children of the Mwela family when culture is used as a weapon in land theft, the pitfalls that befall them, and the lengths that they and their friends must go to, to right wrongs and reclaim what is theirs.

Spruce Avenue by Mutendei Writes

Kenya Fiction
KShs2,000.00
In Spruce Avenue, crime crosses generations, connected by seemingly random events that rupture the stability of a town’s history and future simultaneously. Sergeant Drake, as a law officer and troubled family man, must act to ensure peace and order, while in direct conflict with the present and sins of his past. Sins that have spawned a brand new generation of troublemakers fostering an unexpected rise in local crime, manifested by the actions of a dangerous trio that he has both unknown and unresolved connections to. As he acts on the new infestation of criminality, a darkness in the sheen of town’s society, a decades old lie, created by hate and many juvenile mistakes at the centre of a tragic societal and familial upheaval, threatens to unravel everything he has worked for and plunge Spruce Avenue back into the trauma of its almost forgotten, long ago dark days where crime ran rampant.

Potent Brews Social History Of Alcohol In East Africa 1850-1999

Books, African Interest
KShs4,500.00 KShs3,199.00
Brief Summary This is the first general history of alcohol and drinking in East Africa. Contributes to an emerging field of African social history in distinctive and innovative ways. Willis's central theme is power - from customary beliefs in alcohol as a symbol of authority and a means of enhancement and privilege, to the use of power in advertising and discourse on the consumption of modern bottled beers and spirits. It is Willis's contention that attitudes towards alcohol have become more similar across the region over time. Willis achieves a full chronological span of nearly two centuries. He lays considerable emphasis upon the late-colonial and post-colonial years; thus bringing out the continuities of these years which historians of eastern Africa have tended to overlook. Oral material from three case study areas in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania are integrally woven in with archival and newspaper sources, each reinforcing and elaborating the other. Gikuyu Oral Literature by Wanjiku Mukabi Kabira and Karega wa Mutahi

Books, Kenya Fiction
KShs1,000.00 KShs750.00
This book offers an intimate initiation into the oral literature of the Agikuyu people of Kenya. The authors offer examples of oral narratives, proverbs, songs, riddles and poetry collected from live performances, many of which they have themselves participated in. The examples are rendered both in the Gikuyu language of performance and in the English translation. The authors have succeeded in conveying the atmosphere of the actual performance by remaining faithful to the conversational language of narration or recitation. Each narrative, even when very much a part of a commonly-held tradition, comes out with the originality of the performance of a particular, individual artist. And the songs are presented as they have been sang for particular occasions - by individualized singers who express a cultural and value world through a particularized mood and emotion. The authors also feature quite prominently the performance of two gicandi artists. Gicandi is a uniquely Gikuyu artform - a poetry recited to the accompaniment of the music of the gicandi instrument. With its good examples, lucid and stimulating discussion as well as questions that provoke thought, this book is an ideal support book for the secondary school and university oral literature programmes.

Southern Kikuyu Before 1903 Volume 1, 2 and 3 by L.S.B Leakey

Books, African Interest
Rated 5.00 out of 5
KShs35,000.00 KShs29,500.00
This is a Limited Second Edition, reprint of the three volume book The Southern Kikuyu- before 1903. One of the often unnoticed tragedies of an era of technological advance and improving communications is the passing from living memory of customs, language and beliefs as small insular pockets of culture are overtaken by the sweep of civilization. This impressive book is a complete record of the ways of the Kikuyu people, before and during the period of European influence which accompanied road and railway building and political and economic changes in the late 19th Century. It is the major anthropological achievement of the late L.S.B. Leakey and the culmination of his life-long study of the people among whom he was born and raised. Written in the graceful, readable style characteristic of scholarship in the thirties, it draws on the memories of the Elders whose confidant Dr. Leakey became. A once rich source of tradition and culture, passed on intact from generation to generation, was in danger of drying up without trace – this study, revised and published now, some forty years after it was first undertaken, will secure this fascinating collection of information for posterity now that all the last inheritors of the old Kikuyu way of life are dead. Thanks to Dr. Leakey, and to the collaborators who worked on the manuscript after his death, the Kikuyu mores have been set down – from descriptions of the daily activities of the people, digging, planting, harvesting, care of animals, trading, marriage, tribal raiding, dancing and lawgiving, to the customs connected with sex, linked with rites de passage, religious beliefs, magic and medicine. It is a picture of a successful self-regulating community, in which a strict set of rules and punishments established order and enabled the tribe to survive within its environment. The autonomy of tribal life all over the world is now being eroded, for better or worse. But this well-rounded study, intricate in its mass of detail, yet straightforward in approach, seeks to make no assertions or comparisons with other cultures. It will thus be an important unbiased primary source for social anthropologists, ethnologists and social scientists, as well as being of great value to all those interested in Africa and its history.

Some Traditions of the Akamba of Kenya by Celia Nyamweru

Books
KShs1,500.00 KShs1,200.00
Written to appeal to a wide audience, this book presents both a historical and an updated picture of some important elements of Kamba culture that have been described as ‘supernatural’ or even ‘witchcraft.’ These are traditional practices and beliefs that some people know little about, while others consider them to be evil. However, for many Akamba, both in towns and in the rural areas, these beliefs are part of the reality of modern life. Kĩkamba has many words for them, while in English, they can be described as ‘oaths,’ ‘ordeals,’ ‘vows’ and ‘protective charms.’ The author quotes from interviews with Akamba from rural Ukambani, as well as urban residents; men and women, young and old, Christians and followers of traditional religion. She compares what she learned from them with material from published sources going back to 1860, to show that many traditional beliefs survive to the present day. Celia Nyamweru’s love for and interest in Kenya’s country and people grew from her very first months in the country in 1965. As a graduate student in geography, she studied landforms and rocks in the central Rift Valley. She became a teacher, first at a secondary school, and for over 18 years at Kenyatta University. She has written and edited books and articles for readers at all levels from primary school to specialized scholarship. Her research interests have included the ten thousand year old Lake Nakuru, the active volcano Oldoinyo Lengai, the making of bark cloth in Uganda, the sacred kaya forests of coastal Kenya, and the Mijikenda heroine Mekatilili. She became a Kenya citizen in 1972 and was married under Kikuyu customary law in 1977. She is the proud mother of two daughters and three stepsons, and the ‘cucu’ of eight grandchildren. She hopes that this book will encourage young Kenyans to take more interest in their own culture, since ‘mwacha mila ni mtumwa.’

Clan Cleansing in Somalia The Ruinous Legacy of 1991 by Lidwien Kapteijns

Books, African Interest, International Bestsellers
KShs5,000.00 KShs3,999.00
Brief Summary In 1991, certain political and military leaders in Somalia, wishing to gain exclusive control over the state, mobilized their followers to use terror—wounding, raping, and killing—to expel a vast number of Somalis from the capital city of Mogadishu and south-central and southern Somalia. Manipulating clan sentiment, they succeeded in turning ordinary civilians against neighbors, friends, and coworkers. Although this episode of organized communal violence is common knowledge among Somalis, its real nature has not been publicly acknowledged and has been ignored, concealed, or misrepresented in scholarly works and political memoirs—until now. Marshaling a vast amount of source material, including Somali poetry and survivor accounts, Clan Cleansing in Somalia analyzes this campaign of clan cleansing against the historical background of a violent and divisive military dictatorship, in the contemporary context of regime collapse, and in relationship to the rampant militia warfare that followed in its wake. Clan Cleansing in Somalia also reflects on the relationship between history, truth, and post conflict reconstruction in Somalia. Documenting the organization and intent behind the campaign of clan cleansing, Lidwien Kapteijns traces the emergence of the hate narratives and code words that came to serve as rationales and triggers for the violence. However, it was not clans that killed, she insists, but people who killed in the name of clan. Kapteijns argues that the mutual forgiveness for which politicians often so lightly call is not a feasible proposition as long as the violent acts for which Somalis should forgive each other remain suppressed and undiscussed. Clan Cleansing in Somalia establishes that public acknowledgment of the ruinous turn to communal violence is indispensable to social and moral repair, and can provide a gateway for the critical memory work required from Somalis on all sides of this multifaceted conflict.
