The Opening
I pick up the crimson stiletto. The weight of it is satisfying. I don’t put it away. I don’t hide it.
I take a single, sharp kitchen knife from the magnetic rack and I run the tip of the blade along the red leather, just enough to leave a permanent, jagged scar. I place the shoe back exactly where I found it, but now it looks used. It looks like it has been part of a struggle.
I hear the heavy tread of Julian’s footsteps on the stairs. He’s coming for his midnight scotch. He’s coming to find the “evidence” I’ve prepared for him.
I retreat into the pantry, pulling the door until only a sliver of light remains.
The stage is set. The colors are high-contrast: deep blue shadows and a single, sharp stroke of red. The typography of this night is written in bold, white-hot terror.
“Elena?” Julian calls out. His voice is trembling. He’s reached the kitchen island. He’s seen the shoe.
I don’t answer. I just watch through the crack in the door.
He reaches out to touch the red leather. His fingers are shaking. He looks at the scar on the shoe, and then he looks at the knife rack. He sees the empty slot.
In his mind, the “Jaw-Dropping Twist” is already beginning to take shape. He thinks Grace did it. He thinks his wife has finally snapped.
He’s wrong.
In this house, the help doesn’t just clean up the mess.
I create it.
