Rumble in the Jungle: Leadership from an African Perspective by Norman Moyo

Books
KShs3,000.00 KShs2,790.00
Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, concerned citizens can change Africa. Indeed it is the only thing that would. Observing the impact that the right people in leadership positions, people who wholly subscribe to servant leadership rather than self-serving leadership has been a great source of inspiration. I experienced first-hand how a few good people have come together and brought positive transformation to businesses, creating excellent shareholder value, money for the community, and income for the employees and government. I am convinced that finding the right leaders in communities, societies, companies, and countries is the fundamental difference between prosperity and poverty. It s the difference between greatness and mediocrity, and the difference between successful and failed states. By making different choices in leadership and putting the right people in the right places, we can lead this continent to achieve its full and glorious potential for the next generation not the next election! This is now a leadership call to action! About the Author: Norman Moyo is the Chief Executive Officer of Helios Tanzania. Born in 1973 in Zimbabwe, Norman has extensive experience in the FMCG, particularly telecommunications industry spanning more than 13 years. He started his career working for Standard Chartered Bank in 1996 and immediately joined the telecommunications industry at the onset of the GSM industry working for Econet Wireless in Zimbabwe in 1998. He later re-joined the telecommunications industry as Commercial Director in Zambia with Celtel International, a Pan African group with operations in 15 African countries in 2004. He primarily focused on business re-engineering, brand equity, segmentation, product development, m-commerce, distribution, and Enterprise Segment management. In 2011 Norman was nominated to the prestigious GTB global top 40 world telecom leaders under 40 years as a result of his work in Nigeria. He holds and Honours Degree in Economics, an MBA from the University of Zimbabwe and London Business school training. His values are legacy, integrity, lifelong learning, work and profit. He is also a keen golfer. Endorsement: This is a must-read for leaders who are seeking meaningful insights into doing business in Africa. The stories and case studies reveal Norman Moyo s deep practical experience, and also link to established management theory and frameworks.

Development as Rebellion A biography of Julius Nyerere by Saida Yahya Othman, Ngwanza Kamata and Issa G. Shivji

Books, AutoBiography
KShs8,200.00 KShs7,900.00
Julius Kambarage Nyerere was born on April 13, 1922 in Butiama, on the eastern shore of lake Victoria in north west Tanganyika. His father was the chief of the small Zanaki tribe. He was 12 before he started school (he had to walk 26 miles to Musoma to do so). Later, he transferred for his secondary education to the Tabora Government Secondary School. His intelligence was quickly recognized by the Roman Catholic fathers who taught him. He went on, with their help, to train as a teacher at Makerere University in Kampala (Uganda). On gaining his Certificate, he taught for three years and then went on a government scholarship to study history and political economy for his Master of Arts at the University of Edinburgh (he was the first Tanzanian to study at a British university and only the second to gain a university degree outside Africa. In Edinburgh, partly through his encounter with Fabian thinking, Nyerere began to develop his particular vision of connecting socialism with African communal living. On his return to Tanganyika, Nyerere was forced by the colonial authorities to make a choice between his political activities and his teaching. He was reported as saying that he was a schoolmaster by choice and a politician by accident. Working to bring a number of different nationalist factions into one grouping he achieved this in 1954 with the formation of TANU (the Tanganyika African National Union). He became President of the Union (a post he held until 1977), entered the Legislative Council in 1958 and became chief minister in 1960. A year later Tanganyika was granted internal self-government and Nyerere became premier. Full independence came in December 1961 and he was elected President in 1962. Nyerere’s integrity, ability as a political orator and organizer, and readiness to work with different groupings was a significant factor in independence being achieved without bloodshed. In this he was helped by the co-operative attitude of the last British governor – Sir Richard Turnbull. In 1964, following a coup in Zanzibar (and an attempted coup in Tanganyika itself) Nyerere negotiated with the new leaders in Zanzibar and agreed to absorb them into the union government. The result was the creation of the Republic of Tanzania. Ujamma, socialism and self reliance As President, Nyerere had to steer a difficult course. By the late 1960s Tanzania was one of the world’s poorest countries. Like many others it was suffering from a severe foreign debt burden, a decrease in foreign aid, and a fall in the price of commodities. His solution, the collectivization of agriculture, villigization (see Ujamma below) and large-scale nationalization was a unique blend of socialism and communal life. The vision was set out in the Arusha Declaration of 1967 (reprinted in Nyerere 1968):

The Drinking Mans Guide to Housework by Stephen Mills

Books
KShs1,500.00 KShs1,000.00
Gentlemen, we’ve been had. Women’s wily ways have persuaded us to go along with arbitrary delegation of household chores we would never agree to if we only took more time to think about them. In this book, we have listed how us men have been brainwashed into domesticity. From vacuuming to taking out the garbage to mocking our dignity with doing the shopping, women have infiltrated our subconscious to persuade us to perform a select list of household tasks. Thankfully, we’ve spotted this female manipulation and have brought their calculated tactics to the light of day with this list of the ways women have brainwashed men. We warn you: What you are about to read may be painful, may cut too close to the bone, and may dig up emotions you preferred were buried. But it’s better to learn about it now than stay in the dark indefinitely. Maybe it’s not too late to change the tide. Brace yourself for the ugly truth, gentlemen.

Working with Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman

Books, Self Help & Motivation
KShs2,800.00 KShs2,500.00
Brief summary Do you have what it takes to succeed in your career? The secret of success is not what they taught you in school. What matters most is not IQ, not a business school degree, not even technical know-how or years of expertise. The single most important factor in job performance and advancement is emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is actually a set of skills that anyone can acquire, and in this practical guide, Daniel Goleman identifies them, explains their importance, and shows how they can be fostered. For leaders, emotional intelligence is almost 90 percent of what sets stars apart from the mediocre. As Goleman documents, it's the essential ingredient for reaching and staying at the top in any field, even in high-tech careers. And organizations that learn to operate in emotionally intelligent ways are the companies that will remain vital and dynamic in the competitive marketplace of today—and the future. Comprehensively researched, crisply written, and packed with fascinating case histories of triumphs, disasters, and dramatic turnarounds, Working with Emotional Intelligence may be the most important business book you'll ever read. Drawing on unparalleled access to business leaders around the world and studies in more than 500 organizations, Goleman documents an astonishing fact: in determining star performance in every field, emotional intelligence matters twice as much as IQ or technical expertise. Readers also discover how emotional competence can be learned. Goleman analyzes five key sets of skills and vividly shows how they determine who is hired and who is fired in the top corporations in the world. He also provides guidelines for training in the "emotionally intelligent organization," in chapters that no one, from manager to CEO, should miss. Working with Emotional Intelligence could prove to be the most important reference for bottom-line businesspeople in the first decades of the 21st century ISBN:9780553378580 Author:Daniel Goleman

Through My African Eyes by Jeff Koinange

Books, African Interest
Rated 5.00 out of 5
KShs3,890.00 KShs3,500.00
"Through My African Eyes!” is a concise narrative covering some of the major players in 20th century African politics. The book is rich with insights into the personal and intellectual underpinnings of many historical events in Africa. Chronicles of some pretty interesting Africans from warlords, soldiers, victims and politicians lend insight into Jeff’s celebrated journalistic style. Through his eyes we are made to understand the role of journalist’s as binders of our social fabric. "Through My African Eyes” is very informative and quite humorous, utilizing a modern quick precise narrative style. He is able to describe complex global geopolitical issues with incisive analysis. The book surf’s one through the experience with speed and historical accuracy. We see the visual the words impart, rather than being stuck in prose. The best part is being able to walk the journey informed by a largely Kenyan perspective. Jeff outlines clearly how biased reportage can splinter any society and promote its disintegration by pandering to people’s lowest instincts. The narrative draws out lesser-known aspects of his life. Jeff’s unblinking examination of his grandfather’s life is historically illuminating and serves as a symbolic bridge between the beginning and the end of colonialism. Jeff is the first African ever to win a Television Emmy and a George Foster Peabody. He merited the Vernon Jarrett Award as well as the prestigious! ‘Prix Bayeux’ for reportage that arrested global crises."

Now Branson gives an inside look at his strikingly different swashbuckling style of leadership. Learn how fun, family, passion, and the dying art of listening are key components to what his extended family of employees around the world have always dubbed (with a wink) the "Virgin Way.” This unique perspective comes from a man who dropped out of school at sixteen, suffers from dyslexia, and has never worked for anyone but himself. He may be famous for thinking outside the box—an expression he despises—but Branson asserts that "you’ll never have to think outside the box if you refuse to let anyone build one around you.” This is a unique book on leadership from someone who readily admits he has never read a book on leadership in his life. So expect the unexpected."" ISBN:1591847564 Author:Richard Branson
