Overview
Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: she must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls.
For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful thirteen-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family’s Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims—a bit too strongly.
Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story—and survive this homecoming.

All Things New Heaven Earth and the Restoration

Books, Self Help & Motivation
KShs2,599.00 KShs2,470.00
Book Summary All Things New: Heaven, Earth, and the Restoration of Everything You Love. This revolutionary book about our future is based on the simple idea that, according to the Bible, heaven is not our eternal home--the New Earth is. As Jesus says in the gospel of Matthew, the next chapter of our story begins with "the renewal of all things," by which he means the earth we love in all its beauty, our own selves, and the things that make for a rich life: music, art, food, laughter and all that we hold dear. Everything shall be renewed "when the world is made new." More than anything else, how you envision your future shapes your current experience. If you knew that God was going to restore your life and everything you love any day; if you believed a great and glorious goodness was coming to you--not in a vague heaven but right here on this earth--you would have a hope to see you through anything, an anchor for your soul, "an unbreakable spiritual lifeline, reaching past all appearances right to the very presence of God" (Hebrews 6:19). Most Christians (most people for that matter) fail to look forward to their future because their view of heaven is vague, religious, and frankly boring. Hope begins when we understand that for the believer nothing is lost. Heaven is not a life in the clouds; it is not endless harp-strumming or worship-singing. Rather, the life we long for, the paradise Adam and Eve knew, is precisely the life that is coming to us. And that life is coming soon. ISBN:9780718038007 Author:John Eldredge

In the Castle of My Skin

Books, African Interest
KShs2,200.00 KShs1,990.00
Brief Summary In a sleepy fishing village in 1930s Barbados, nine-year-old G. leads a life of quiet mischief. While the village lies tranquil in the shadow of its English landlord, Mr Creighton, and his towering house on the hill, G. makes his own fun, crab catching, teasing preachers, and playing among the pumpkin vines. Yet from this world of boyish pursuits, the precocious G. finds himself slowly awakening to strange goings-on in adult society. All around him, sudden bursts of violence - a devastating flood on the morning of his birthday; the headmaster unduly flogging his schoolmates on Empire day - hint at a brutality and destruction lurking beneath the apparently peaceful order of things. As the mounting wrongs of the present drive the villagers to rise up against Mr Creighton, the fissures in the facade of his Barbadian 'little England' begin to crack open, laying bare the central, bruising secret at the heart of their shared past. And as the world he knows crumbles before his eyes, G. is spurred ever closer to a life-changing decision. Poetic, unsettling, this classic coming-of-age novel is a story of tragic innocence, as a poor village boy comes to consciousness amid the collapse of colonial rule in mid-century Barbados. King of Wrath by Ana Huang

Books
KShs2,000.00 KShs1,890.00
Ruthless. Meticulous. Arrogant. Dante Russo thrives on control, both personally and professionally. The billionaire CEO never planned to marry— until the threat of blackmail forces him into an engagement with a woman he barely knows. Vivian Lau, jewelry heiress and daughter of his newest enemy. It doesn’t matter how beautiful or charming she is. He'll do everything in his power to destroy the evidence and their betrothal. There’s only one problem: now that he has her...he can't bring himself to let her go. *** Elegant. Ambitious. Well-mannered. Vivian Lau is the perfect daughter and her family’s ticket into the highest echelons of high society. Marrying a blue-blooded Russo means opening doors that would otherwise remain closed to her new-money family. While the rude, elusive Dante isn't her idea of a dream partner, she agrees to their arranged marriage out of duty. Craving his touch was never part of the plan. Neither was the worst thing she could possibly do: fall in love with her future husband. King of Wrath is a steamy billionaire/arranged marriage romance. It contains explicit sexual content, profanity, and mild violence. Recommended for mature readers only.

South Sudan The State We Aspire to by Peter Adwok Nyaba

Books, African Interest
KShs2,699.00 KShs2,565.00
Brief Summary South Sudan: The State We Aspire To was conceived and written mid-2009, two years to the conduct of the referendum on self-determination. The comprehensive peace agreement provided the people of Southern Sudan’ this inalienable right after nearly five decades of conflict. Peter Adwok Nyaba incisively discusses the high expectations and hopes the people of southern Sudan had, mixed with anxiety that characterises the fluid and unpredictable nature of the interim period leading to independence of South Sudan in 2011, and hence the title. In this second edition of South Sudan: The State We Aspire To, written after the eruption of violence in December 2013, the events vindicated what the author correctly discussed the situation southern Sudan was in as being ‘on the horns of a great dilemma’ or the attitude of its leaders being ‘between treason and stupidity.’ It was inevitable that the internal crisis in The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM)/Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) leadership and failure to pursue socioeconomic development commensurate with its liberation ideology would plunge the country into hell on earth. Nyaba’s prime objective in The State We Aspire To, is to provoke a debate, inside and outside the SPLM and South Sudan at large, on the political future of South Sudan. He argues that the SPLM top leadership, cadres and general membership are collectively responsible for what is happening to this young nation having willfully abandoned the ideals for which the South Sudanese people sacrificed in the wars of national liberation. "I have criticized the SPLM leadership for its dismal performance in GOSS over the last six years, and I really mean it. There is no justification whatsoever for this performance except that SLPM suffered from a congenital ailment which afflicted its leaders.” (Peter Adwok Nyaba) "

Meeting With Those You Killed by Francis Tucungwirwe

Books, African Interest
KShs1,599.00 KShs1,520.00
Brief Summary Be warned not to miss your lunch or flight because the story is so enthralling that when you open the book it becomes hard to close it until you complete it! And we are sure you will read the book again and again! The fiction blend with facts in this book makes it the only book of its kind in the world for the world! But in essence, it is a truth and accountability quest of a person who survived a terrorist attack because of a flat tyre that delayed him to the venue of the 7/11/2010 Kampala bombings. This attack was handiwork of Al-Qaeda linked Al-shabaab group. Like it is with most attacks, the leaders of the terrorists celebrated the attack and called their suicide bombers martyrs! This attitude of terrorists lived to confront Francis Tucungwirwe’s conscience as a survivor-Imagine somebody attacks and kills people and believes that in front of his God, he will be a martyr; that he will be rewarded with prizes and will be welcomed by angels after his death. But is this true? The book seeks for some actual answers and accountability through an alien process in some Africa societies called Rutangaaza that was used to hold the dead accountable or consult them. The main episode in the book is the Rutangaaza Global Peace Conference. Where some answers and accountability are derived and felt when one sees Osama bin Laden expressing apology to the world for his terror deeds and for misrepresenting Islam. And you see him crying and promising that if he got chance to come back on earth he would be a leading demobiliser of terrorists in the world. But also some moments at the conference piss you off like when you see him (Osama bin Laden) saying that he misses his family especially his mother and children then you ask yourself where were these feelings when he was executing plots to kill people in masses. And indeed at the conference some participants heckled at him and when you as the reader you are about to burst with questions for him and possibly contemplating to attack him at the conference screen, then he tells you that terrorism ideology and propaganda is powerful because it deludes people of such normal feelings and makes them objects of terror. Then when you analyse his response you realize that the world could have spent over $ 5 trillion since 9/11 fighting terrorists yet the problem is terrorism- indeed it is a fact that you can shoot a terrorist and kill him like Osama bin Laden but miss terrorism. So what can we do to shoot terrorism? Osama bin Laden, 9/11 victims and the global delegates made suggestions to the world. Indeed the Rutangaaza conference ends well with a communiqué from the 9/11 victims, Osama bin Laden and the global witnesses. In the end you realize this is a book that could end terrorists and terrorism and save the world billions of dollars that are spent on terror related wars every year. Finally If you have lost a loved one like the 9/11 victim families or any other person in the world has who lost loved ones to terrorists, at the glance of this title you probably feel like no this book is an insult to me-how can the killer of my loved one meet them like in case of 9/11 families, but when you realise the fact that the author of the book was meters away to a devastating terrorist attack of Al-Qaeda mentored Al-shabaab then you are comforted that you are in safe hands because the writer took care of any emotions and ethics relating to terrorist victims and their families in the book. Why Nations Fail by Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson

Books, Governance
KShs3,000.00 KShs2,690.00
Brilliant and engagingly written, Why Nations Fail answers the question that has stumped the experts for centuries: Why are some nations rich and others poor, divided by wealth and poverty, health and sickness, food and famine? Is it culture, the weather, geography? Perhaps ignorance of what the right policies are? Simply, no. None of these factors is either definitive or destiny. Otherwise, how to explain why Botswana has become one of the fastest growing countries in the world, while other African nations, such as Zimbabwe, the Congo, and Sierra Leone, are mired in poverty and violence? Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson conclusively show that it is man-made political and economic institutions that underlie economic success (or lack of it). Korea, to take just one of their fascinating examples, is a remarkably homogeneous nation, yet the people of North Korea are among the poorest on earth while their brothers and sisters in South Korea are among the richest. The south forged a society that created incentives, rewarded innovation, and allowed everyone to participate in economic opportunities. The economic success thus spurred was sustained because the government became accountable and responsive to citizens and the great mass of people. Sadly, the people of the north have endured decades of famine, political repression, and very different economic institutions—with no end in sight. The differences between the Koreas is due to the politics that created these completely different institutional trajectories. Based on fifteen years of original research Acemoglu and Robinson marshall extraordinary historical evidence from the Roman Empire, the Mayan city-states, medieval Venice, the Soviet Union, Latin America, England, Europe, the United States, and Africa to build a new theory of political economy with great relevance for the big questions of today, including: - China has built an authoritarian growth machine. Will it continue to grow at such high speed and overwhelm the West? - Are America’s best days behind it? Are we moving from a virtuous circle in which efforts by elites to aggrandize power are resisted to a vicious one that enriches and empowers a small minority? - What is the most effective way to help move billions of people from the rut of poverty to prosperity? More philanthropy from the wealthy nations of the West? Or learning the hard-won lessons of Acemoglu and Robinson’s breakthrough ideas on the interplay between inclusive political and economic institutions? Why Nations Fail will change the way you look at—and understand—the world."

Through My African Eyes by Jeff Koinange

Books, African Interest
Rated 5.00 out of 5
KShs3,890.00 KShs3,500.00
"Through My African Eyes!” is a concise narrative covering some of the major players in 20th century African politics. The book is rich with insights into the personal and intellectual underpinnings of many historical events in Africa. Chronicles of some pretty interesting Africans from warlords, soldiers, victims and politicians lend insight into Jeff’s celebrated journalistic style. Through his eyes we are made to understand the role of journalist’s as binders of our social fabric. "Through My African Eyes” is very informative and quite humorous, utilizing a modern quick precise narrative style. He is able to describe complex global geopolitical issues with incisive analysis. The book surf’s one through the experience with speed and historical accuracy. We see the visual the words impart, rather than being stuck in prose. The best part is being able to walk the journey informed by a largely Kenyan perspective. Jeff outlines clearly how biased reportage can splinter any society and promote its disintegration by pandering to people’s lowest instincts. The narrative draws out lesser-known aspects of his life. Jeff’s unblinking examination of his grandfather’s life is historically illuminating and serves as a symbolic bridge between the beginning and the end of colonialism. Jeff is the first African ever to win a Television Emmy and a George Foster Peabody. He merited the Vernon Jarrett Award as well as the prestigious! ‘Prix Bayeux’ for reportage that arrested global crises."
