Rejected & Blessed is Anderea Morara’s second novel. His first novel, The Sting, has been adopted by many secondary schools as a crucial reader. Rejected & Blessed is set in East Africa, but cast in a global context with the primary purpose of highlighting the human aspects of the continuous cultural transformation from the pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial eras as well as the global political economy. The novel tells the dramatic and traumatic love story in which the clash of cultures in the context of rapid social change, makes it awfuly difficult to determine right from wrong.
This book gives a glimpse of how this transition affected and is affecting, communities in the region and the resultant coping strategies as well as the effects of the associated coping mechanisms, especially in the realm of love, marriage and child-rearing. On the global scene, the subtle dynamics of economic hegemony, foreign aid, brain drain, racism and cultural dialectics are glossed on.

The Lady who Married a Crow

Quick Reading English
KShs900.00 KShs700.00
In The Lady who married a Crow and Other Stories J. C. Makori brings rare tales and storytelling from the past. The stories capture a tradition and wisdom which, if not documented, would disappear all the same. Storytelling was at the core of the social fabric of the people of the past. It brought together the young and old, and the raw and experienced. Through this interactive process, the community’s cumulative knowledge, experiences and wisdom were passed from generation to generation. The process further cemented the place of the storytellers as custodians of community wisdom, values and history. In this collection, the author has given a glimpse into that past, the lessons the community treasured and wisdom embedded in the stories. Written in the style of the original oral form, the tales offer lessons, and insights into history and culture that could inform the present and shape the future. What others say “The stories in this collection are compelling, painting vivid images in the reader’s mind through immersing the reader in the world of the different characters and the community in which the stories are set! The book adds a much needed African folk tale resource, and can be used as a pedagogical tool and for recreational reading.” – Grace Wangari, Children’s Book Editor. “This is thrilling collection that would interest readers across age sets. The stories offer moral lessons such as the value of truthfulness, kindness and good relations.” – Bethsheba Nyabuto, Book Designer/Editor.

Guidance and Counselling: A Handbook for Teachers and Students

Books
KShs700.00 KShs600.00
Teaching minus counselling is like faith without action, which is dead (James 2:26). Dr. Charles Tinega's more than twenty-five (25) years' teaching sojourn provides a perfect experience that he now wants to share with you: most excellent Theophilus (Luke 1:3). With respect to guidance and counselling, the experience is revealed in this simple, practical, and heartfelt handbook. Indiscipline in institutions of learning poses a great challenge not only to young people but also to society at large. This is compounded by life-threatening phenomena such as HIV/AIDS and the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as drugs and other dangerous and addictive substances. All these undermine the provision of quality education to the youth in institutions of learning. Guidance and Counselling: a Handbook for Teachers and Students starts off the presentation of the topical issues with a captivating motivational story dubbed "Parable of a Foolish Bee", which captures the need for young people to respect elders in society. The book goes on to offer guidelines on formulating a code of conduct, especially for secondary schools in Kenya. This is beneficial to institutions that have not yet had an elaborate copy of school rules and regulations or those wishing to revise the existing ones.

Why We Tell Stories

Kenya Fiction
KShs1,000.00 KShs600.00
Storytelling was an intrinsic activity in traditional African communities. Typically told by older people, usually grandmothers and grandfathers, stories were a way of life for the young and old alike, linking the past, present and future of those societies. Set as they were around a fire, the storytelling tradition strengthened communal ties between the old and the young, and as reinforced bonds among the young. Stories emphasized shared culture, cultural values and history that were the foundation of the society’s ties. They underscored important societies’ traditions, beliefs and other norms. From the old, the young learnt lessons about their community that to affirmed their collective identity. They learnt and internalized moral values such as honesty, courage, respect, solidarity and caring for others. Invariably, stories discouraged greed and selfishness. Further, the tales captured the essence of the environment in which the people lived while reinforcing their core values. They contributed to character-building through appreciation of the moral of the stories. In Why We Tell Stories, Dorcas Kiptoo and Arthur Dobrin bring their storytelling experiences and expertise to the fore through a selection of from the African folklore. Even as the two look back to societies of yore to dig up the tales, the inherent lessons remain as relevant in contemporary times as they were ages ago. About the Authors Dorcas Kiptoo was born in Mogotio, Kenya. She attended Kenyatta University where she earned her Bachelor of Education degree. She currently lives in New York.

Cheat Sheet for Running a Start-Up in Africa

Self Help & Motivation
KShs2,000.00 KShs1,500.00
This is an amazing read for young innovators. The journey of entrepreneurship is like a labyrinth, one that calls for determination and focus to achieve the desired goal. Indeed it reinforces the adage that ‘footprints on the sand of time are never made while sitting down’. Aaron, you have used technology to transform and save lives through the Damu Sasa app, making blood available to the thousands in need. ~ Dr. Ademola Olajide, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Innovators have a passion for solving problems that afflict society and, in the process, they go through and learn a lot. Aaron’s Ogunde’s Cheat Sheet for Running a Startup in Africa is an account of a resilient innovative endeavour whose trajectory has been punctuated by hits and misses, and highs and lows. During the journey, there has been an accumulation of lessons worth sharing with curious individuals, nascent entrepreneurs, innovators, start-up entrepreneurs, micro and small enterprises founders as well as academics and policy makers. The book is a must-read for all who have been accorded an opportunity to live. ~ Prof. Vincent Machuki, Associate Professor, Faculty of Business and Management Sciences, University of Nairobi. Aaron Ogunde is a brilliant entrepreneur and an inspiring leader whose experiences and insights we can all learn from. This overview of his journey, and the challenges he has faced along the way, is a must-read for social entrepreneurs and business leaders. It highlights contextually and culturally relevant lessons for managers of early stage organizations operating in difficult and often bureaucratic environments, while also providing guidance and motivation for those looking to make a difference in society. I am forever learning from Aaron’s journey and highly recommend this book! ~ Sahar Jamal, MBA, BCom., BA; Founder & CEO, Maziwa Breastfeedin

The Footfalls of My Heart

African Interest
KShs1,000.00 KShs800.00
Footfalls of My Heart is a long narrative poem that draws style, idioms and expression from the culture, traditions, and philosophy of the Abagusii community of Kenya through the lens of a girl as she inches along toward marriage. In the community, marriage was a complex, long-drawn and tedious process that involved many parties including the families of the two, and peers of both the bride and groom, among many other key players. Throughout the process ran the concept of the ideal desirable partner. This poem captures the bride’s perspective of the groom, Rimura, depending on the many aspects deemed to define the ‘perfect’ rimura. Nyamwange’s Footfalls of My Heart is a bride’s response to his earlier publication, The Girl of Red Beauty which presented a bride’s dreams of an ideal wife, in the tradition set by Okot p’Bitek’s twin publications, Song of Lawino and Song of Ocol. What Others Say "This is truly beautiful. I enjoyed the stream of consciousness and wordplay, which powerfully built up the feeling behind the words. I love how the author writes with some alliteration and sensory descriptions. I loved the imagery here: ‘The ring of bellyful laughter, ‘The beaming of a full moon on my face’ Is this a poem or a story I can't even tell!!! Why not both? It feels like the subject matter happened once upon a time.” - Chasejameson Manar Spears, Poet, Oakland, California, USA “The author has set a high standard to which African poetry should be written. Taking after Okot p’Bitek, the author has, however, heightened the language and the condensation of the expressions.” – Dr. Chris Okemwa, lecturer, Kisii University and poet

Reminiscing Wonderland

History
KShs1,200.00 KShs1,100.00
Praise for Dr. Mong'are Bw'Onyancha's Reminiscing Wonderland “Interesting stories! ...some brought me to tears. Others were enthralling. I was moved by Molo's life story and captivated by the coming of age stories.” Cindy, Editor “Reminiscing Wonderland. The narrator's imagination perceives his new school as a magical dreamland, a 'Once upon a time perfect home 'until he encounters 'stains' which threaten to curtail his aspirations. His learner's enthusiasm, just like in the novel, The African Child, is without parallel. He is like an arrow on the hunter's bow, ready to go. Molo is one of the hurdles he has to overcome. Superficially, Molo is portrayed as a cold, stone-hearted troublemaker. Yet, the writer delves into his stained life. By the end, the reader sympathizes with the concept of his being, relationships, and nurturing (compare with the novels, A Grain of Wheat and Crime and Punishment, where main characters don't have close trusted relationships and how they reap what they sow). Good defeats evil, and there is the hope of redemption and support systems to the purest of state. With the passage of time and increase in human activities, all life in Wonderland will be altered in some way (Paradise Lost, Wonderland Stained).”

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

Books, African Interest
KShs1,000.00 KShs890.00
THINGS FALL APART tells two overlapping, intertwining stories, both of which center around Okonkwo, a "strong man” of an Ibo village in Nigeria. The first of these stories traces Okonkwo's fall from grace with the tribal world in which he lives, and in its classical purity of line and economical beauty it provides us with a powerful fable about the immemorial conflict between the individual and society. The second story, which is as modern as the first is ancient, and which elevates the book to a tragic plane, concerns the clash of cultures and the destruction of Okonkwo's world through the arrival of aggressive, proselytizing European missionaries. These twin dramas are perfectly harmonized, and they are modulated by an awareness capable of encompassing at once the life of nature, human history, and the mysterious compulsions of the soul. THINGS FALL APART is the most illuminating and permanent monument we have to the modern African experience as seen from within. "

The State of Africa by Martin Meredith

Books, African Interest
KShs2,890.00 KShs2,690.00
Africa is forever on our TV screens, but the bad-news stories (famine, genocide, corruption) massively outweigh the good (South Africa). Ever since the process of de-colonialisation began in the mid-1950s, and arguably before, the continent has appeared to be stuck in a process of irreversible decline. Constant war, improper use of natural resources and misappropriation of revenues and aid monies contribute to an impression of a continent beyond hope. How did we get here? What, if anything, is to be done? Fully revised and updated and weaving together the key stories and characters of the last sixty years into a stunningly compelling and coherent narrative, Martin Meredith has produced the definitive history of how European ideas of how to organise 10,000 different ethnic groups has led to what Tony Blair described as the 'scar on the conscience of the world'. Authoritative, provocative and consistently fascinating, this is the updated edition of the seminal book on one of the most important issues facing the West today."

The ideal introduction to the genius of Ernest Hemingway, "The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories" contains ten of Hemingway's most acclaimed and popular works of short fiction. Selected from "Winner Take Nothing, Men Without Women, " and "The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories. This collection includes "The Killers," the first of Hemingway's mature stories to be accepted by an American periodical; the autobiographical "Fathers and Sons," which alludes, for the first time in Hemingway's career, to his father's suicide; "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," a "brilliant fusion of personal observation, hearsay and invention," wrote Hemingway's biographer, Carlos Baker; and the title story itself, of which Hemingway said: "I put all the true stuff in," with enough material, he boasted, to fill four novels. Beautiful in their simplicity, startling in their originality, and unsurpassed in their craftsmanship, the stories in this volume highlight one of America's master storytellers at the top of his form. Operation Linda Nchi

Books, African Interest
KShs1,299.00 KShs1,235.00
The book does not cover all aspects of Operational Art as pertains to Operation "Linda Nchi" [ swahili for safeguard or protect the Country ], as some of the details are still classified and the overall operation against Al Shabaab is still a work in progress., ie. it covers the Operational Art aspects of macroscopic maneuver, operational approach and operational objectives. But little information is revealed as pertains to Operational Logistics and the extent of disruption that is still required against Al Shabaab Operations in the Horn of Africa and beyond. Indeed the foreward by His Excellency Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta, C.G.H, the President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander in Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, appreciates the fact that the war against Al Shabaab is still ongoing – in other instances he has stated "...for as long as it takes....” The book is described as the "idea” of the former Chief of Kenya Defence Forces (CDF), General (Dr.) Julius Karangi, who at the time of his active service felt that the campaign against Al Shabaab should be documented in form of a publicly available book. This was a unique idea for an African Military Force at the present time, but there are significant past conflicts documented in books especially around the colonial era, struggles for independence and post-independence episodes of guerilla warfare. An example of past documentation and appreciation of history that is declining, is that in the 1950s to 1960s, students in Kenyan schools learnt about General Paul Emil von Lettow Voerbeck and "The Great War". This is despite the fact that Kenya was a British colony. Given the number of Kenya Defence Forces troops that have fallen to "water hole" ambushes near or inside Somalia, and the nature of the conflict in Somalia, Northern Nigeria [ Boko Haram ] and Central African Republic [ Lords Resistance Army ], it may be helpful if the Kenyan military was to dig deeper into history and reclaim the many lost lessons. Africa does not give up its secrets easily. Buried there lie answers about the origins of humankind. After a century of investigation, scientists have transformed our understanding about the beginnings of human life. But vital clues still remain hidden. In Born in Africa, Martin Meredith follows the trail of discoveries about human origins made by scientists over the last hundred years, recounting their intense rivalry, personal feuds, and fierce controversies as well as their feats of skill and endurance. The results have been momentous. Scientists have identified more than twenty species of extinct humans. They have firmly established Africa as the birthplace not only of humankind but also of modern humans. They have revealed how early technology, language ability, and artistic endeavour all originated in Africa; and they have shown how small groups of Africans spread out from Africa in an exodus sixty thousand years ago to populate the rest of the world. KShs3,890.00 KShs3,500.00
"Through My African Eyes!” is a concise narrative covering some of the major players in 20th century African politics. The book is rich with insights into the personal and intellectual underpinnings of many historical events in Africa. Chronicles of some pretty interesting Africans from warlords, soldiers, victims and politicians lend insight into Jeff’s celebrated journalistic style. Through his eyes we are made to understand the role of journalist’s as binders of our social fabric. "Through My African Eyes” is very informative and quite humorous, utilizing a modern quick precise narrative style. He is able to describe complex global geopolitical issues with incisive analysis. The book surf’s one through the experience with speed and historical accuracy. We see the visual the words impart, rather than being stuck in prose. The best part is being able to walk the journey informed by a largely Kenyan perspective. Jeff outlines clearly how biased reportage can splinter any society and promote its disintegration by pandering to people’s lowest instincts. The narrative draws out lesser-known aspects of his life. Jeff’s unblinking examination of his grandfather’s life is historically illuminating and serves as a symbolic bridge between the beginning and the end of colonialism. Jeff is the first African ever to win a Television Emmy and a George Foster Peabody. He merited the Vernon Jarrett Award as well as the prestigious! ‘Prix Bayeux’ for reportage that arrested global crises."

The most dangerous corner of Africa is its north-east corner where instability reigns and terrorism thrives on the antagonisms of all of its governments. This region, comprising Ethiopia, Sudan and now South Sudan, Somalia, Djibouti and Eritrea, and stretching to include Kenya and Uganda, is a pivotal geopolitical pressure point in world politics. It stands at the hinge of Africa and the Middle East. It was of vital interest to the superpowers during the Cold War and remains, in the post-Cold War period, a key area in international relations and a major source of mineral wealth, while its sufferings have been described as a scar on the conscience of humanity. But seemingly endemic political chaos, failed states, terrorism and international piracy have dealt a death blow to the ambitions of the US and her allies in the international community to further a New World Order of liberal democracy. The beautifully executed stories in the Last Word are adorned with occurrences from the author's extensive travels and medical experiences, some heart-rending and others with exultant endings. Dawood's stories are lit with humor and wit that make the myriad medical challenges seem surmountable. The stories though appearing in the Surgeon's Diary are fresh and authentic. Just like in the other three titles that form the quartet, the author has once again used his scalpel and pen with prowess to bring real surgical drama to our doorstep. Dawood, a celebrated surgeon and formidable author, has authored The Price of Living, One Life too Many, Water Under the Bridge, among others. The Last Word is his eleventh title.
