Description

Race, Rail & Society: Roots of Modern Kenya is a historical work by Kenyan author Neera Kapila that examines how the construction of the Uganda Railway — popularly known as the “Lunatic Express” — shaped the racial, social, and political landscape of what would become modern Kenya.
The book explores the deep interplay between three forces: the iron rails laid from Mombasa to Lake Victoria, the racial hierarchies imposed by British colonialism, and the diverse communities that were brought together or set against each other in the process.

Key Themes

The Railway as Nation-Builder

The Uganda Railway, constructed between 1896 and 1901, is treated not merely as an engineering feat but as the foundational infrastructure of Kenya’s modern identity. The railway from Mombasa to Lake Victoria is widely regarded as the project that effectively created modern Kenya. Roger Farnworth
Race and Colonial Society

The book traces how the railway entrenched a rigid racial order among three groups — Europeans (settlers and administrators), South Asians (Indians), and Africans — each occupying distinct and unequal roles in colonial society. South Asians saw themselves as the makers of modern Kenya; their capitalists recruited, fed, and housed the 40,000 laborers who built the railway, they developed urban property, and their agents enabled Africans to participate in the cash economy.

A significant thread of the book is the largely overlooked role of the Indian community — both the indentured laborers who physically built the railway and the merchants and professionals who built the economy around it.
African Displacement and Resistance

The construction of the railway cut through the lands of various ethnic groups including the Kikuyu, Maasai, Kamba, and Luo, and the railway’s path through the Rift Valley opened up what would become “White Man’s Country” to European settler farming. The book examines how this dispossession planted the seeds of nationalist resistance. Retrospect Journal

Colonial Politics and Inequality

Kapila situates the railway within the broader politics of British imperialism, showing how land alienation, racial segregation, and economic exploitation were all intertwined with the railway’s expansion.

Significance

The book is notable for offering a multi-racial perspective on Kenya’s colonial history, giving voice to the South Asian diaspora’s role in building East Africa while also centering African experiences of dispossession. It is widely used in Kenyan university curricula and is held in several East African academic libraries, including Karatina University. It was reviewed in the journal South Asian Diaspora (Vol. 4, No. 2, 2012), reflecting its relevance to diaspora studies as well as Kenyan history.

The Rational Male Positive Masculinity by Rollo Tomassi Volume 3

Books, Business, Entrepreneurs, Self Help & Motivation
KShs3,700.00 KShs3,500.00
Building once more on the core works of The Rational Male® by Rollo Tomassi, Positive Masculinity is a supplemental reading in a series designed to give men, not a prescription, but actionable information to build better lives for themselves based on realistic and objective intersexual dynamics between men and women. Rational and pragmatic, the book outlines four key themes:
  • Red Pill Parenting
  • The Feminine Nature
  • Social Imperatives
  • Positive Masculinity
Free of the pop-psychology pablum about parenting today, Red Pill Parenting is primarily aimed at the fathers (and fathers-to-be) who wanted more in depth information about raising their sons and daughters in a Red Pill aware context. While not an instruction manual, it will give men some insight into how to develop a parenting style based on Red Pill principles as well as what they can expect their kids to encounter from a feminine-primary social order determined to ‘educate’ them. The Feminine Nature is a collection of essays, revised and curated, that specifically address the most predictable aspects of the female psyche. It outlines and explores both the evolutionary and socialized reasons for women’s most common behaviors and their motives, and how men can build this awareness into a more efficient way of interacting with them. Social Imperatives details how the female psyche extrapolates into western (and westernizing) cultural narratives, social dictates and legal and political legislation. This is the Feminine Imperative writ large and this section explores how feminism, women’s sexual strategy and primary life goals have molded our society into what we take for granted today. Also detailed is the ‘women’s empowerment’ narrative, and the rise of a blank-slate egalitarian equalism masking as a form of female supremacism that has fundamentally altered western cultures. The last section, Positive Masculinity, is comprised of essays, reformed and expanded upon, that will give men a better idea of how to define masculinity for themselves from a conventional and rational perspective. In an era when popular culture seeks to dismiss, ridicule, shame and obscure masculinity, this section and this book is intended to raise men’s awareness of how fluid redefinitions of masculinity have been deliberately used to disempower and feminize men by a feminine-primary social order. This book is the third in of series complements to The Rational Male®, the 20-year core writing of author/blogger Rollo Tomassi from therationalmale.com. Rollo Tomassi is one of the most prominent voices in the globally growing, male-focused online consortium known as the “Manosphere” as well as the ‘Godfather’ of intersexual Red Pill awareness.

Throughout my life I have achieved many remarkable things. In Screw It, Let's Do It, I will share with you my ideas and the secrets of my success, but not simply because I hope they'll help you achieve your individual goals. Today we are increasingly aware of the effects of our actions on the environment, and I strongly believe that we each have a responsibility, as individuals and organisations, to do no harm. I will draw on Gaia Capitalism to explain why we need to take stock of how we may be damaging the environment, and why it is up to big companies like Virgin to lead the way in a more holistic approach to business. In Screw It, Let's Do It I'll be looking forwards to the future. A lot has changed since I founded Virgin in 1968, and I'll explain how I intend to take my business and my ideas to the next level and the new and exciting areas - such as launching Virgin Fuels - into which Virgin is currently moving. But I have also brought together all the important lessons, good advice and inspirational adages that have helped me along the road to success. Ironically, I have never been one to do things by the book, but I have been inspired and influenced by many remarkable people. I hope that you too might find a little inspiration between these pages." ISBN:753511497 Author:Richard Branson

Working with Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman

Books, Self Help & Motivation
KShs2,800.00 KShs2,500.00
Brief summary Do you have what it takes to succeed in your career? The secret of success is not what they taught you in school. What matters most is not IQ, not a business school degree, not even technical know-how or years of expertise. The single most important factor in job performance and advancement is emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is actually a set of skills that anyone can acquire, and in this practical guide, Daniel Goleman identifies them, explains their importance, and shows how they can be fostered. For leaders, emotional intelligence is almost 90 percent of what sets stars apart from the mediocre. As Goleman documents, it's the essential ingredient for reaching and staying at the top in any field, even in high-tech careers. And organizations that learn to operate in emotionally intelligent ways are the companies that will remain vital and dynamic in the competitive marketplace of today—and the future. Comprehensively researched, crisply written, and packed with fascinating case histories of triumphs, disasters, and dramatic turnarounds, Working with Emotional Intelligence may be the most important business book you'll ever read. Drawing on unparalleled access to business leaders around the world and studies in more than 500 organizations, Goleman documents an astonishing fact: in determining star performance in every field, emotional intelligence matters twice as much as IQ or technical expertise. Readers also discover how emotional competence can be learned. Goleman analyzes five key sets of skills and vividly shows how they determine who is hired and who is fired in the top corporations in the world. He also provides guidelines for training in the "emotionally intelligent organization," in chapters that no one, from manager to CEO, should miss. Working with Emotional Intelligence could prove to be the most important reference for bottom-line businesspeople in the first decades of the 21st century ISBN:9780553378580 Author:Daniel Goleman

Brief Summary Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution – and How It Can Renew America In this brilliant, essential book, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Thomas L. Friedman speaks to America's urgent need for national renewal and explains how a green revolution can bring about both a sustainable environment and a sustainable America. Friedman explains how global warming, rapidly growing populations, and the expansion of the world’s middle class through globalization have produced a dangerously unstable planet--one that is "hot, flat, and crowded." In this Release 2.0 edition, he also shows how the very habits that led us to ravage the natural world led to the meltdown of the financial markets and the Great Recession. The challenge of a sustainable way of life presents the United States with an opportunity not only to rebuild its economy, but to lead the world in radically innovating toward cleaner energy. And it could inspire Americans to something we haven't seen in a long time--nation-building in America--by summoning the intelligence, creativity, and concern for the common good that are our greatest national resources. Hot, Flat, and Crowded is classic Thomas L. Friedman: fearless, incisive, forward-looking, and rich in surprising common sense about the challenge--and the promise--of the future.
