  1. Unidentified reader – 21st December 2023

    Rated 5 out of 5

Combination of sweet and sour stories with life lessons for young parent’s, older parents as well. I honestly thought some of these things happen beyond our borders.
After reading my copy I bought two other copies for ladies I know just so that they’d tell me if they’ve heard similar stories and to my disbelief they know people who’ve experienced similar things.
    A must read for everyone!

  2. Rehema Zuberi – 13th December 2023

    Rated 4 out of 5

I have a friend who is obsessed with Joan Thatiah. I was reading Joan way before I met her but feel she came and overtook me and made this loving one of her life missions. I am okay with it and entertain it. I love love people who are about a thing and show the world. One thing that sets her apart from me is while we both have the entire collection of Joan Thatiah’s work, she has the Grown Woman t-shirts. She orders the books immediately they are out and I, with a more extensive TBR, take my time and almost always order two at a go because I wait until I can remember which is almost always closer to another publication out.

My favourite thing about Joan’s books is they can be read in a single sitting. I use them every now and then to make myself feel good about myself with pushing forward my reading goals because I have to be my own cheerleader.

When I picked this collection, I thought it was going to be my usual read and go. It turned out to be one that sits with me and keep wondering where these women in Nairobi are. I am aware that these things happen: gay men in marriages, kept women, housemaids replacing wives, affairs, secrets etc etc. What I may have never thought about, is these things happening closer to home than I would expect/want. When we listen to/read stories, we view them from lenses of others rather than ourselves.

There was an issue with my copy and Joan was very prompt in ensuring I got a replacement of it.

Inferior: The true power of women and the science that shows it by Angela Saini

Books, International Bestsellers, Self Help & Motivation, Women
KShs1,799.00 KShs1,499.00
Brief Summary Are women more nurturing than men? Are men more promiscuous than women? Are males the naturally dominant sex? And can science give us an impartial answer to these questions? Taking us on an eye-opening journey through science, Inferior challenges our preconceptions about men and women, investigating the ferocious gender wars that burn in biology, psychology and anthropology. Angela Saini revisits the landmark experiments that have informed our understanding, lays bare the problem of bias in research, and speaks to the scientists finally exploring the truth about the female sex. The result is an enlightening and deeply empowering account of women’s minds, bodies and evolutionary history. Interrogating what these revelations mean for us as individuals and as a society, Inferior unveils a fresh view of science in which women are included, rather than excluded.

The Woman Warrior by Maxine Hong Kingston

Books, AutoBiography, Women
KShs1,799.00 KShs1,499.00
Brief Summary In her award-winning book The Woman Warrior, Maxine Hong Kingston created an entirely new form—an exhilarating blend of autobiography and mythology, of world and self, of hot rage and cool analysis. First published in 1976, it has become a classic in its innovative portrayal of multiple and intersecting identities—immigrant, female, Chinese, American. As a girl, Kingston lives in two confounding worlds: the California to which her parents have immigrated and the China of her mother’s “talk stories.” The fierce and wily women warriors of her mother’s tales clash jarringly with the harsh reality of female oppression out of which they come. Kingston’s sense of self emerges in the mystifying gaps in these stories, which she learns to fill with stories of her own. A warrior of words, she forges fractured myths and memories into an incandescent whole, achieving a new understanding of her family’s past and her own present.

Gut the inside story of our body’s most under rated organ by Giulia Enders

Books, International Bestsellers, Self Help & Motivation, Women
KShs2,500.00 KShs2,090.00
Brief Summary The key to living a happier, healthier life is inside us. Our gut is almost as important to us as our brain or our heart, yet we know very little about how it works. In Gut, Giulia Enders shows that rather than the utilitarian and ― let’s be honest ― somewhat embarrassing body part we imagine it to be, it is one of the most complex, important, and even miraculous parts of our anatomy. And scientists are only just discovering quite how much it has to offer; new research shows that gut bacteria can play a role in everything from obesity and allergies to Alzheimer’s. Beginning with the personal experience of illness that inspired her research, and going on to explain everything from the basics of nutrient absorption to the latest science linking bowel bacteria with depression, Enders has written an entertaining, informative health handbook. Gut definitely shows that we can all benefit from getting to know the wondrous world of our inner workings. In this charming book, young scientist Giulia Enders takes us on a fascinating tour of our insides. Her message is simple ― if we treat our gut well, it will treat us well in return. But how do we do that? And why do we need to? Find out in this surprising, and surprisingly funny, exploration of the least understood of our organs.

Power Moms: How Executive Mothers Navigate Work and Life by Joann Lublin

Books, Business, Entrepreneurs, Parenting, Women
KShs4,000.00 KShs3,299.00
Brief Summary For the first time in American history, a significant number of mothers are heading major corporations, including General Motors, Ulta Beauty, and Best Buy. Over the past several decades, women have made gains throughout executive suites. Yet these “Power Moms” still struggle with balancing their management responsibilities with raising children. Joann S. Lublin draws on the experiences of the nation’s two generations of these successful women to measure how far we’ve come—and how far we still need to go. Lublin combines her own insights with those of eighty-five executive mothers across industries—including experienced public-company chiefs such as Carol Bartz, the first woman to command Autodesk and Yahoo; Hershey’s Michele Buck, DuPont’s Ellen Kullman, ITT’s Denise Ramos, and WW International’s Mindy Grossman—and twenty-five of their grown daughters. Lublin reveals how trailblazer boomers, many now in their sixties, often endured sweeping disapproval for their demanding management careers, even as their own daughters sometimes rejected their choices. While the second wave of executive mothers—all under forty-five—handle working parenthood with less angst, they still lead stressful lives. Power Moms provides lessons and advice to help today’s professional women, their families, and their employers navigate this challenging terrain. Lublin looks at the trade-offs mothers are too often forced to make between work and family and the root causes, including the dearth of large-scale paid parental leave and other family-friendly policies. While it celebrates the gains women have made, Power Moms makes clear how much more must be done to make being a working mother easier.

Black Sunday by Tola Rotimi Abraham

Books, African Interest, International Bestsellers, Women
KShs1,500.00 KShs1,250.00
Brief Summary Following the fate of one family over the course of two decades in Nigeria, this debut novel tells the story of each sibling’s search for agency, love, and meaning in a society rife with hypocrisy but also endless life “I like the idea of a god who knows what it’s like to be a twin. To have no memory of ever being alone.” Twin sisters Bibike and Ariyike are enjoying a relatively comfortable life in Lagos in 1996. Then their mother loses her job due to political strife, and the family, facing poverty, becomes drawn into the New Church, an institution led by a charismatic pastor who is not shy about worshipping earthly wealth. Soon Bibike and Ariyike’s father wagers the family home on a “sure bet” that evaporates like smoke. As their parents’ marriage collapses in the aftermath of this gamble, the twin sisters and their two younger siblings, Andrew and Peter, are thrust into the reluctant care of their traditional Yoruba grandmother. Inseparable while they had their parents to care for them, the twins’ paths diverge once the household shatters. Each girl is left to locate, guard, and hone her own fragile source of power. Written with astonishing intimacy and wry attention to the fickleness of fate, Tola Rotimi Abraham’s Black Sunday takes us into the chaotic heart of family life, tracing a line from the euphoria of kinship to the devastation of estrangement. In the process, it joyfully tells a tale of grace and connection in the midst of daily oppression and the constant incursions of an unremitting patriarchy. This is a novel about two young women slowly finding, over twenty years, in a place rife with hypocrisy but also endless life and love, their own distinct methods of resistance and paths to independence.
