To identify the economic stars of the future we should abandon the habit of extrapolating from the recent past and lumping wildly diverse countries together. We need to remember that sustained economic success is a rare phenomenon.

As an era of easy money and easy growth comes to a close, China in particular will cool down. Other major players including Brazil, Russia, and India face their own daunting challenges and inflated expectations. The new “breakout nations” will probably spring from the margins, even from the shadows. Ruchir Sharma, one of the world’s largest investors in emerging markets for Morgan Stanley, here identifies which are most likely to leap ahead and why.

After two decades spent traveling the globe tracking the progress of developing countries, Sharma has produced a book full of surprises: why the overpriced cocktails in Rio are a sign of revival in Detroit; how the threat of the “population bomb” came to be seen as a competitive advantage; how an industrial revolution in Asia is redefining what manufacturing can do for a modern economy; and how the coming shakeout in the big emerging markets could shift the spotlight back to the West, especially American technology and German manufacturing.

What emerges is a clear picture of the shifting balance of global economic power and how it plays out for emerging nations and for the West. In a captivating exploration studded with vignettes, Sharma reveals his rules on how to spot economic success stories. Breakout Nations is a rollicking education for anyone looking to understand where the future will happen.

The Code of Capital by Katharina Pistor

Books, Business
£43.50 £41.50
Brief Summary The Code of Capital: How the Law Creates Wealth and Inequality. A compelling explanation of how the law shapes the distribution of wealth. Capital is the defining feature of modern economies, yet most people have no idea where it actually comes from. What is it, exactly, that transforms mere wealth into an asset that automatically creates more wealth? The Code of Capital explains how capital is created behind closed doors in the offices of private attorneys, and why this little-known fact is one of the biggest reasons for the widening wealth gap between the holders of capital and everybody else. In this revealing book, Katharina Pistor argues that the law selectively "codes" certain assets, endowing them with the capacity to protect and produce private wealth. With the right legal coding, any object, claim, or idea can be turned into capital--and lawyers are the keepers of the code. Pistor describes how they pick and choose among different legal systems and legal devices for the ones that best serve their clients' needs, and how techniques that were first perfected centuries ago to code landholdings as capital are being used today to code stocks, bonds, ideas, and even expectations--assets that exist only in law. A powerful new way of thinking about one of the most pernicious problems of our time, The Code of Capital explores the different ways that debt, complex financial products, and other assets are coded to give financial advantage to their holders. This provocative book paints a troubling portrait of the pervasive global nature of the code, the people who shape it, and the governments that enforce it. ISBN:9780691178974 Author:Katharina Pistor

The age of unreason

Books, Self Help & Motivation
£12.50 £12.08
Brief Summary In an era when change is constant, random, and, as Handy calls it, discontinuous, it is necessary to break out of old ways of thinking in order to use change to our advantage. Handy examines how dramatic changes are transforming business, education, and the nature of work. We can see it in astounding new developments in technology, in the shift in demand from manual to cerebral skills, and in the virtual disappearance of lifelong, full-time jobs. Handy maintains that discontinuous change requires discontinuous, upside-down thinking, and discusses the need for new kinds of organizations, new approaches to work, new types of schools, and new ideas about the nature of our society. Lamu: A Brief History by Roland Minor

Books, African Interest, Educational Books
£8.50
This book gives an insightful look at the early history of the island of Lamu on the Kenya coast, as well as the surrounding area. Arab and Indian sailors dominated the maritime trade of the western Indian Ocean from earliest times. Greek sailors operating out of Egyptian ports joined them and it was from them that the first written records of the East African coast are derived. Lamu, with its fine natural harbour and abundant supplies of fresh water, likely played a major part in this maritime trade. By the 14th century the renowned Moroccan traveller, ibn Battúta, reported that the whole East African coast had been Islamicized. Then came the Portuguese in the last years of the 15th century. With their faster ships and gunnery they dominated the existing trade resulting in a catastrophic collapse of local economies. In the mid-17th century the ruler of Mombasa appealed to the Sultan of Oman for aid in driving off the Portuguese. This heralded Omani interest in East Africa and the founding of the Sultanate of Zanzibar. The British took an interest in the coast in their attempts to stop the slave trade. Eventually, under pressure from the British, the Sultan of Zanzibar ceded the administration of the coastal strip to the British, leading in due course to the establishment of Kenya Colony. Lamu played a key role in the evolving history of the Kenya coast.

Tuki English Swahili Dictionary

Books
£19.00 £16.95
TUKI English - Swahili Dictionary is the most up to date dictionary of current English. It is published after more than a century since Madan published the first English - Swahili Dictionary in 1894, and half a century since Johnson (1939) was published. Johnson (1939) English - Swahili Dictionary, hitherto the most elaborate and authoritative dictionary, was compiled with the objective of helping the user to comprehend English texts. With the changing needs of a dictionary user, a new dictionary was necessary for two reasons : (1) to record new words and new meanings of words which the language acquired during the last 55 years, and (2) to provide some lexicographical information that current dictionary users need. TUKI English-Swahili Dictionary was written with this background. It's vocabulary covers a wide range of lexicon that includes both the general language and specialized language. It has more than 50,000 entries, some of which are technical words. It should however be emphasized that technical words which have been entered in this dictionary are only those which appear in the general language although they still belong to the specialized fields. English as a world language is not always used the same way throughout the English world. It has some variations in form and meaning of words which are specific to one region or country. The language has also some words that suggest a particular style, attitude or level of formality. It has words which have been borrowed from other languages in recent years. This dictionary provides adequate information about some of these aspects so as to alert the user on when and where a word can or cannot be used and the connotation it may have to the audience.

Why Nations Fail by Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson

Books, Governance
£19.00 £17.45
Brilliant and engagingly written, Why Nations Fail answers the question that has stumped the experts for centuries: Why are some nations rich and others poor, divided by wealth and poverty, health and sickness, food and famine? Is it culture, the weather, geography? Perhaps ignorance of what the right policies are? Simply, no. None of these factors is either definitive or destiny. Otherwise, how to explain why Botswana has become one of the fastest growing countries in the world, while other African nations, such as Zimbabwe, the Congo, and Sierra Leone, are mired in poverty and violence? Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson conclusively show that it is man-made political and economic institutions that underlie economic success (or lack of it). Korea, to take just one of their fascinating examples, is a remarkably homogeneous nation, yet the people of North Korea are among the poorest on earth while their brothers and sisters in South Korea are among the richest. The south forged a society that created incentives, rewarded innovation, and allowed everyone to participate in economic opportunities. The economic success thus spurred was sustained because the government became accountable and responsive to citizens and the great mass of people. Sadly, the people of the north have endured decades of famine, political repression, and very different economic institutions—with no end in sight. The differences between the Koreas is due to the politics that created these completely different institutional trajectories. Based on fifteen years of original research Acemoglu and Robinson marshall extraordinary historical evidence from the Roman Empire, the Mayan city-states, medieval Venice, the Soviet Union, Latin America, England, Europe, the United States, and Africa to build a new theory of political economy with great relevance for the big questions of today, including: - China has built an authoritarian growth machine. Will it continue to grow at such high speed and overwhelm the West? - Are America’s best days behind it? Are we moving from a virtuous circle in which efforts by elites to aggrandize power are resisted to a vicious one that enriches and empowers a small minority? - What is the most effective way to help move billions of people from the rut of poverty to prosperity? More philanthropy from the wealthy nations of the West? Or learning the hard-won lessons of Acemoglu and Robinson’s breakthrough ideas on the interplay between inclusive political and economic institutions? Why Nations Fail will change the way you look at—and understand—the world."

Hot Flat and Crowded by Thomas Friedman

Books, Energy
£12.50 £12.08
Brief Summary Hot, Flat, and Crowded: Why We Need a Green Revolution – and How It Can Renew America In this brilliant, essential book, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Thomas L. Friedman speaks to America's urgent need for national renewal and explains how a green revolution can bring about both a sustainable environment and a sustainable America. Friedman explains how global warming, rapidly growing populations, and the expansion of the world’s middle class through globalization have produced a dangerously unstable planet--one that is "hot, flat, and crowded." In this Release 2.0 edition, he also shows how the very habits that led us to ravage the natural world led to the meltdown of the financial markets and the Great Recession. The challenge of a sustainable way of life presents the United States with an opportunity not only to rebuild its economy, but to lead the world in radically innovating toward cleaner energy. And it could inspire Americans to something we haven't seen in a long time--nation-building in America--by summoning the intelligence, creativity, and concern for the common good that are our greatest national resources. Hot, Flat, and Crowded is classic Thomas L. Friedman: fearless, incisive, forward-looking, and rich in surprising common sense about the challenge--and the promise--of the future.
