African scholars are being called upon to write, recover and preserve the African past which was for a long time dominated by foreign scholars who wrote about the continent selectively. This book, Turkana Proverbs, Wise Sayings and Idioms, stands as a pivotal initiative amidst a collective effort by Turkana literary scholars to propel the preservation, exploration, and promotion of intangible cultural heritage of the Turkana people. Within the Turkana community, knowledge is traditionally transmitted through oral literature. Proverbs, wise sayings and Idioms, serving as conduits of amassed cultural wisdom and life experiences, offer invaluable insights into human behaviors, addressing aspects like greed, ignorance, procrastination, and susceptibility to deception. Regrettably, these proverbs, wise sayings and idioms, a treasured heritage of the Turkana people, face the threat of extinction due to the burgeoning influence of Western education and the encroachment of external cultures. The book is based on field research and experiential views of the author who was born and has lived in the community. Readers from all disciplines will find the book useful. Areas studies, especially on Africa, and all related disciplines will find the book relevant.
