THE HARMONY OF THE FOREST

She built it to teach. They used it to watch. At twenty-three, Zuri Odhiambo was the prodigy of the tech world, a brilliant Kenyan coder who created Mwalimu—an open-source AI tutor designed to bring education to the most remote corners of the continent. She believed a tool built with good intentions could only ever be used for good. She was wrong. Now twenty-four and disillusioned, Zuri walks away from a high-stakes Silicon Valley career and returns to her grandmother’s village on the shores of Lake Victoria. But the home she remembers is gone. In its place is the Lake Belt Lithium Project, a massive industrial mine fueling the global green energy revolution. As the mine lights turn the lake into mercury every night at 6:47 PM, Zuri discovers a devastating truth: her beautiful code has been weaponized. Mwalimu is no longer a teacher; it is a predictive policing system for the Ministry of Interior, used to flag "at-risk" youth and neutralize resistance before it even begins. Caught between a mentor who sold her soul to military contractors and a childhood love who is now the leader of the Mau Mau Digital Resistance, Zuri must navigate a landscape where data is the new gold and attention is the new territory. AFRO-CENTRIC FUTURES is a fierce, sensual, and unsparing techno-thriller about the "new scramble for Africa." It is the story of a young woman who must learn to unbuild what she made, to resist without becoming the enemy, and to discover that the things worth building are not the things that scale—but the things that hold. ________________________________________ Why Read Afro-Centric Futures? • A Gripping Techno-Thriller: Follow Zuri’s high-stakes journey across twelve months and twelve Swahili proverbs as she attempts to dismantle her own creation. • Timely Themes: An exploration of the ethical cost of "green energy," the colonizing power of algorithms, and the struggle for data sovereignty. • Rich Cultural Depth: A narrative rooted in the landscape of Lake Victoria, blending traditional wisdom with a pulse-pounding political plot.
