Where the Sunrise Dies is a sweeping dark fantasy epic that chronicles the tragic transformation of the Crimson Prince, a devout Christian monarch whose unwavering faith and desperate love ultimately damn him to an eternity of darkness.
The novel opens with a starving grave robber, driven to desperation by poverty, he attempts to rob an ancient cemetery bordering a ruined castle.
There he encounters a mysterious old man with burning silver eyes who spares his life only to share the tale of his damnation, the story of the Crimson Prince.
The Crimson Prince inherits the throne of Transylvania at just thirteen, the sole heir of the beloved Crimson King who devoted his reign to God and his people. Raised without a mother (who died in childbirth) and burdened by duty, the young prince grows into a stoic, humorless ruler. Brilliant but joyless, a “holy son of God with only half a soul.” The priests and nuns of Transylvania recognize his need for companionship and orchestrate his marriage to Sunrise, a virtuous noblewoman of breathtaking beauty beloved by all classes.
What follows is a tender courtship, months of patient silence broken by shared moments: Sunrise painting while her husband trains, playing violin as he studies, teaching her to touch the royal wolves. Slowly, the Crimson Prince learns to smile, to laugh, to love. Their marriage blossoms into genuine passion, and for a brief time, true joy fills the castle.
Their happiness shatters with the arrival of the Ottoman Empire’s Golden Conqueror, a charismatic Muslim king commanding an army of 50,000 golden, armored soldiers. When his messengers arrive at Easter celebration demanding Transylvania’s submission, offering silver as Judas was once offered, the Crimson Prince slaughters them and declares holy war.
The war that follows is brutal and brilliant. With only 3,300 soldiers against impossible odds, the Crimson Prince and his twelve generals, each named after biblical figures, wage a guerrilla campaign in the Carpathian Mountains.
They destroy bridges, collapse mountain passes with explosives, and use the terrain to devastating effect. The Crimson Prince becomes the “Lord Impaler,” displaying a savagery that terrifies even his own men, impaling hundreds of Turkish soldiers in grotesque forests of the dead.
Throughout the campaign, a mysterious winged demon with blazing silver eyes watches the Crimson Prince with obsessive admiration, appearing in frozen moments to offer friendship and power. The prince, faithful to Christ, repeatedly rejects these advances, until the war reaches its darkest hour.
Where the Sunrise Dies is a tragic romance wrapped in epic warfare, a meditation on how the purest love can become the darkest curse.
It examines what happens when a good man’s grief becomes stronger than his faith. When the light he fought to protect becomes the fire that burns away his humanity.
