Description

In today’s challenging work environment where so many who graduated college several years ago, with previously enviable and admirable degrees, are still looking for elusive jobs, getting fired from one’s job can feel like the very end of the road. “Not so!” says Vincent Ogutu, a six-time author of powerful motivational books. In this epic book, “Sacked! So What? ~ Power of Hope and Action”, he persuasively shows us that sometimes being sacked could signal the beginning of a great future in entrepreneurship.

From continually wisely investing in knowledge to building viable relationships, the author details how to monetize one’s skills in order to stop building the dreams of employers and instead, create a business based on one’s own vision and having created it, sustain it. The heart-warming, sometimes heart-wrenching, stories of men and women who overcame the once-seeming tragedy of job loss are the cherries on this proverbial cake making this book a must-read.

Well done Vincent! This is a must-read in this day and age of unemployment, retrenchments and uncertainty in the job market. I thoroughly enjoyed editing it and consider it among my top reads for 2023! If you are unhappy in your employment; if you are afraid that you could be sacked at any time; if you are wondering whether you can build a business, then read this book and you will walk boldly into your future! I highly recommend this treasure to every employed professional. I have read my copy several times and already given it to my friends who agreed with me, it’s full of great tips on how to navigate a job loss.

I got sacked in 2017 and i was fortunate to get this book a few years later, it changed my mindset, and am persuaded it will help many more, whether you have lost your job or not.

Pick it today, thank me later!

“Life is very unpredictable. Imagine working for an international organization and then boom, zero. You find yourself in another country washing people’s clothes to survive.” Vincent Ogutu

Most of us never think of eventualities like those – or even being thrown out of the house due to rent arrears, unable to pay school fees, hospital bills etc.
We must seriously get out of our comfort zones, and plan to secure some sustainable ways to survive disruptions.
This book, “Sacked so what? Is a must read. Remember HR is increasingly being disrupted. Where will we be, and how prepared are we to face that inevitability. COACH Mathangani Muya

By the way thank you for writing that book. It has helped me realize that I was a rocket and when I was fired it was an opportunity for me to take to the stars. Last year I travelled to 3 African countries to offer consultancy services, something I never experienced when I was an employee. It changed my perspective from employment to Deployment. I am now deploying myself on a daily basis and thoroughly enjoying it.

Edwin Otieno a HR Practitioner- Review
So one day after payday you decide to go book shopping.
You buy lots of books and place them neatly on your book-shelf.
When it’s time to read, you start with the popular ones: Trevor Noah’s”Born a Crime”, Chinua Achebe’s “There Was a Country”, Dan Brown’s “Inferno” and so on.
Then one night you find yourself bored, after having finished re-reading Dan Senor’s “Start Up Nation”, which you had to pen a review for. You check what’s on the book-shelf and think to yourself: there are only boring books left here.
    You pick one anyway.
It’s titled “*Sacked So What!*” and is by an author named Vincent Ogutu, whom you’ve come across his books few times.
As you peruse through the synopsis at the back of the cover, you wonder why on earth you bought the book.
It doesn’t seem at all interesting. It’s not even your favourite genre.

You take it to bed to read anyway, because you spent Ksh.1000 buying it and there’s no way you’re going to let your hard-earned money go down the drain.

Twenty minutes into reading the book, you go to make yourself a strong cup of coffee and bring a pen and high-lighter, because you realise that there’s NO WAY that you’re going to put the book down until you’re done with it. It’s so brilliant and so well-written that you slap yourself for not having read it earlier and for judging it prematurely.
That’s been my situation the last week.

Vincent ushers you into the world with plethora of opportunities with captivating tales of those who’ve been several times but had the unwavering faith that all ends well and if it is not well then it’s not the end.
One of the greatest books to read during this time of uncertainty.
    Absolutely unputdownable.

    Get this book, y’all.

Vincent Ogutu, may your pen never run dry of ink. You’re a dynamite.

  11. Chief, the NuriaStore bookseller – 14th August 2022

    Rated 5 out of 5

The book, Sacked? So What! – Power of Hope and Action is mainly about how to overcome job loss.

Nothing prepares one for loss of income.

Ogutu writes in easy-to-read English and short phrases that are very catchy and easy to remember.

The Author’s gifted mind can be seen in the weaving of words that inject someone with the, ‘YES I CAN’ attitude.

In this book real people, across Kenya and Africa share their stories of how they overcame adversity and triumphed.

There’s a chapter about a person coming from nothing, how they built their careers and business, and there’s also the picking up after getting fired from a high-flying job.

The lessons that the book gives can be summarized as, pick yourself up fast, have a goal, focus on that goal, pick up and respect referrals, plan to pay debts, invest in quality friends and employees, and network consistently.

    Don’t be poor,
    P – passing
    O – over
    O – opportunities
    R – repeatedly
Focus on the present and where you want to go. Never dwell on your past failure. Success comes from common things done extraordinarily.
The book heavily leans on entrepreneurship as a way to success. Is this its target audience?
This explains much about the author who is a business and personal development coach.
The problem majorly is lack of innovation and not money. How else do you explain a hawker starting a business with 3000 and ending up a millionaire? An apprentice starting with no money buys out the boss. Focus on the problem you want to solve and the skills that are required. – Vincent Ogutu
If you are feeling lost, empty and insufficient, this book is for you.
Strategies on rebuilding the self; planning, preparing, and executing those plans, litter the pages of the book, especially, the summary of lessons shared at the end of each chapter.
    Have a motivating day!

    #ReadAndReview
Employment can deceive you big time. Many have been disillusioned by lifestyles created and supported by their employer: you will have a company car, maybe even a driver, entertainment allowances, VIP passes and invitations to fancy events, hobnobbing with who’s whos of society at prestigious hotels, expensive club memberships and networking hobbies such as golf. You will watch people trip over themselves to deliver gifts at Christmas time. You will receive undeserved respect and preferential treatment. It’s all good, however, you best not begin feeling entitled, remember the pecks are for the position, not you. Be humble. Sit down.
    .
Think about how much circumstances would change if you didn’t have that job title, that position of power and influence. Unemployment is possible for anyone through no fault of theirs: it could be corporate restructuring, job redundancy, cost cutting retrenchements, corporate politics, end of contract. Being self employed doesn’t exempt you from the overall risk because even great businesses have been known to collapse.
    .
So what do you do when that job that has come to define you and give you stability is gone? It is time to audit your skills, experience and look for opportunities. It is surprising that those retrenched, sacked or retired go on to become more successful than when they were in employment. Your future relies on your mindset.
    .
This book tells of individuals who found themselves without jobs or lost their businesses for one reason or another; and their journey and strategies on re-building self. It also offers reflection for those that forecast that one day they will exit formal employment and pursue individual goals.
    .
Meanwhile, many remain in employment for the fear of the unknown. This book is for you too. I could tell you what says about fear and faith but it’s even better if you read it yourself.

    • You have a comfortable writing style. The result is that the book is an ‘easy read.’ In my view, that is important as it allows the book to embrace a wide audience from educators, researchers, entrepreneurs, ‘wanna be’ entrepreneurs, and sacked employees looking for a way to salvage their future.
    • I really enjoyed the quotes you had at the beginning of each chapter, and scattered throughout the book. They were inspiring and very relevant to me as a leader, entrepreneur, and reader of your book. Some of your quotes were familiar, but, there were some which I had not read before. I appreciate that you did not just copy from another author, but your quotes show diligent research and unique creativity. I appreciated that.
    • I also found your ‘Lessons’ learned at the end of each chapter helpful. They pulled together, very succinctly, the life lessons for each story chapter. That helped to make the stories personal and more meaningful to me. I found myself applying the ‘Lessons’ to myself as I read through them.
    • I enjoyed the stories. It was clear the stories were real stories involving real people with genuine experiences. The stories were told in a simple and straightforward manner with little fanfare or ‘fluff’. That made them endearing and powerful.
It was a joy to read your little book, Vincent. I found it uplifting and highly relevant. I am sure in reading your book, those facing the crossroads of vocational direction will be filled with new peace and understanding for their present, and hope and anticipation for their future.

The quotes show diligent research and unique creativity. I appreciated that! Ray Barreth Serial Entrepreneur and CEO Agora Enterprises

Lessons from the Streets ~ The Art of Money

~ Vincent Ogutu

 Inside these pages

Lessons From The Streets ~ The Art of Money, the author’s sixth book, is an acknowledgement of our street vendors, their hard work and their resilience. It defines hustles, side hustles and the informal businesses which while thought less of, are actually one of the key drivers of our economy. In his unique captivating style, the author tells the story of our heroes and heroines - the street entrepreneurs, leaving the reader in no doubt that our informal businesses are therefore deserving of greater recognition and appreciation. The book is also a call to all of us to realise the potential that is literally and figuratively on our streets, not only for others, but for anyone who will take these profound lessons and make them work for oneself.

 The Author

Vincent Ogutu, an avid reader and prolific author, is the founder of Entrepreneurs Corner, an online entrepreneurial ecosystem. THE COMEBACK by Vincent Ogutu

Self Help & Motivation
Rated 5.00 out of 5
KShs1,599.00 KShs1,499.00
In The Comeback, the author affirms the saying that if you see them on the mountaintop, they didn’t just fall there. He has pooled together authentic, real life stories that depict the harsh terrain these people have walked or crawled through, the desperation, loss and pain on the one hand and on the other hand, the incredible resilience, determination and fortitude that kept them going even when there was no light at the end of the proverbial tunnel, when they skidded again and again down the slippery slope and hope was in short supply. In the depth of despair a helping hand, a mentor or sheer grit has led to triumph, success, restoration and in several cases, unparalleled wealth. The stories and the reflections the Author shares will break your fall, provide stepping stones, a breath of fresh air and illuminate your path as you seek greater heights, or try to dig yourself out of any quagmire. Definitely a must-read.

IF LOVE IS A GAME THESE ARE THE RULES

Books, Self Help & Motivation
KShs795.00 KShs756.00
Now, in If Love Is a Game, These Are the Rules, she presents ten simple rules to help us find true love and create long-lasting, authentic relationships. After twenty-five years of conducting workshops and seminars, Chérie has discovered that the most important--and often the most difficult--part of the human experience is partnership. Everyone is either looking for love or trying to find a way to sustain and feed the love that they already have. Chérie's ten rules are universal truths that we inherently know but often lose sight of in the confusing game of romance--rules as simple as "You Must Love Yourself First," "Communication Is Essential," and "You Must Nurture the Relationship for It to Thrive." Once understood and embraced, her rules help us learn more about our true selves and our needs--and make us better able to meet the needs of others. As the ten rules show, building and sustaining authentic love is a delicate process that requires negotiation and communication, and while love is often challenged by change, it provides a variety of opportunities for us to grow as individuals. In her inimitably warm and inviting style, Chérie shares her own insights into love's journey, from building intimacy and taking the risk of commitment to rekindling the faded flame by bringing back the "sizzle factor." Her inspirational stories, coupled with practical exercises--such as creating a criteria list for a potential mate or making an outline for a formal relationship "check-in"--will bring out the authentic lover in each of us. Fresh and inspiring, If Love Is a Game, These Are the Rules is a perfect guide to living a real-life "happily ever after". ISBN:767904796 Author:CARTER-SCOTT CHERIE

Take The Risk

Books, Self Help & Motivation
KShs995.00 KShs946.00
But by insulating ourselves from the unknown—the risks of life—we miss the great adventure of living our lives to their full potential. Ben Carson spent his childhood as an at-risk child on the streets of Detroit, and today he takes daily risks in performing complex surgeries on the brain and the spinal cord. Now, offering inspiring personal examples, Dr. Carson invites us to embrace risk in our own lives. From a man whose life dramatically portrays the connection between great risks and greater successes, here are insights that will help you dispel your fear of risk so you can dream big, aim high, move with confidence, and reap rewards you’ve never imagined. By avoiding risk, are you also avoiding the full potential of your life? The surgery was as risky as anything Dr. Ben Carson had seen. The Bijani sisters—conjoined twins—shared part of a skull, brain tissue, and crucial blood flow. One or both of them could die during the operation. But the women wanted separate lives. And they were willing to accept the risk to reach the goal, even against the advice of their doctors … As a child on the dangerous streets of Detroit, and as a surgeon in operating theaters around the world, Dr. Ben Carson has learned all about risk—he faces it on a daily basis. Out of his perilous childhood, a world-class surgeon emerged precisely because of the risks Dr. Carson was willing to take. In his compelling new book, he examines our safety-at-all-costs culture and the meaning of risk and security in our lives. In our 21st-century world, we insulate ourselves with safety. We insure everything from vacations to cell phones. We go on low-cholesterol diets and buy low-risk mutual funds. But in the end, everyone faces risk, like the Bijani twins did with their brave decision. Even if our choices are not so dramatic or the outcome so heartbreaking, what does it mean if we back away instead of move forward? Have we so muffled our hearts and minds that we fail to reach for all that life can offer us—and all that we can offer life? Take the Risk guides the reader through an examination of risk, including: • A short review of risk-taking in history. • An assessment of the real costs and rewards of risk. • Learning how to assess and accept risks. • Understanding how risk reveals the purpose of your lives." What the Dog Saw by Malcolm Gladwell

Books, Self Help & Motivation
KShs1,890.00 KShs1,590.00
What is the difference between choking and panicking? Why are there dozens of varieties of mustard but only one variety of ketchup? What do football players teach us about how to hire teachers? What does hair dye tell us about the history of the 20th century? In the past decade, Malcolm Gladwell has written three books that have radically changed how we understand our world and ourselves: The Tipping Point, Blink, and Outliers. Now, in What the Dog Saw, he brings together, for the first time, the best of his writing from The New Yorker over the same period. Here you'll find the bittersweet tale of the inventor of the birth control pill, and the dazzling creations of pasta sauce pioneer Howard Moscowitz. Gladwell sits with Ron Popeil, the king of the American kitchen, as he sells rotisserie ovens, and divines the secrets of Cesar Millan, the "dog whisperer" who can calm savage animals with the touch of his hand. He explores intelligence tests and ethnic profiling and why it was that employers in Silicon Valley once tripped over themselves to hire the same college graduate.

Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell

Rated 4.00 out of 5
KShs2,000.00 KShs1,890.00
In this stunning new book, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers"--the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different? His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing. Along the way he explains the secrets of software billionaires, what it takes to be a great soccer player, why Asians are good at math, and what made the Beatles the greatest rock band.

Working with Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman

Books, Self Help & Motivation
KShs2,800.00 KShs2,500.00
Brief summary Do you have what it takes to succeed in your career? The secret of success is not what they taught you in school. What matters most is not IQ, not a business school degree, not even technical know-how or years of expertise. The single most important factor in job performance and advancement is emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is actually a set of skills that anyone can acquire, and in this practical guide, Daniel Goleman identifies them, explains their importance, and shows how they can be fostered. For leaders, emotional intelligence is almost 90 percent of what sets stars apart from the mediocre. As Goleman documents, it's the essential ingredient for reaching and staying at the top in any field, even in high-tech careers. And organizations that learn to operate in emotionally intelligent ways are the companies that will remain vital and dynamic in the competitive marketplace of today—and the future. Comprehensively researched, crisply written, and packed with fascinating case histories of triumphs, disasters, and dramatic turnarounds, Working with Emotional Intelligence may be the most important business book you'll ever read. Drawing on unparalleled access to business leaders around the world and studies in more than 500 organizations, Goleman documents an astonishing fact: in determining star performance in every field, emotional intelligence matters twice as much as IQ or technical expertise. Readers also discover how emotional competence can be learned. Goleman analyzes five key sets of skills and vividly shows how they determine who is hired and who is fired in the top corporations in the world. He also provides guidelines for training in the "emotionally intelligent organization," in chapters that no one, from manager to CEO, should miss. Working with Emotional Intelligence could prove to be the most important reference for bottom-line businesspeople in the first decades of the 21st century ISBN:9780553378580 Author:Daniel Goleman

FIFTH MOUNTAIN

Books, Self Help & Motivation
KShs1,890.00 KShs1,690.00
A stunning novel in the tradition of the highly acclaimed "The Alchemist, " this is Coelho's daring retelling of the prophet Elijah. During the chaos of the ninth century B.C., Jezebel, wife to Israel's ruler, orders the execution of all prophets who refuse to worship the pagan god Baal. The young prophet Elijah, commanded by an angel of God to flee Israel, seeks safety in the land of Zarephath, where he unexpectedly finds true love with a young widow. But this new-found rapture is to be cut short, and Elijah sees all of his hopes and dreams irrevocably erased. What follows is sure to be viewed as Coelho's literary milestone: the quietly moving account of a man touched by the hand of God who must triumph over his frustrations in a soul-shattering trial of faith.Inspired by a circumstance that forever altered Coelho's own life, "The Fifth Mountain" is a testament to the truth that tragedy in life should not be considered a punishment but a challenge of the spirit. Gorgeous in its narrative and unforgettable in its prose, "The Fifth Mountain" teaches without being sanctimonious. This is a timeless story for the ages, a tale of the past that resonates powerfully for today's readers. ISBN:722537514 Author:COELHO PAULO

Veronica Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho

Books, Self Help & Motivation
KShs1,500.00 KShs1,390.00
Twenty-four-year-old Veronika seems to have everything she could wish for: youth and beauty, pleny of attractive boyfriends, a fulfilling job, and a loving family. Yet something is lacking in her life. Inside her is a void so deep that nothing could possibly ever fill it. So, on the morning of November 11, 1997, Veronika decides to die. She takes a handful of sleeping pills expecting never to wake up. Naturally Veronika is stunned when she does wake up at Villete, a local mental hospital, where the staff informs her that she has, in fact, partially succeeded in achieving her goal. While the overdose didn't kill Veronika immediately, the medication has damaged her heart so severely that she has only days to live. The story follows Veronika through the intense week of self-discovery that ensues. To her surprise, Veronika finds herself drawn to the confinement of Villete and its patients, who, each in his or her individual way, reflect the heart of human experience. In the heightened state of life's final moments, Veronika discovers things she has never really allowed herself to feel before: hatred, fear, curiosity, love, and sexual awakening. She finds that every second of her existence is a choice between living and dying, and at the eleventh hour emerges more open to life than ever before. In Veronika Decides to Die, Paulo Coelho takes the reader on a distinctly modern quest to find meaning in a culture overshadowed by angst, soulless routine, and pervasive conformity. Based on events in Coelho's own life, Veronika Decides to Die questions the meaning of madness and celebrates individuals who do not fit into patterns society considers to be normal. Poignant and illuminating, it is a dazzling portrait of a young woman at the crossroads of despair and liberation, and a poetic, exuberant appreciation of each day as a renewed opportunity.
