Behind the Story: The Heartbeat of Lenah

I had an amazing childhood, growing up in my village Turesia—surrounded by family, friends, and a close-knit community. I played non-stop, laughed my heart out, and ran freely up and down the hilly landscape. I ate my fill, and lived without a care in the world.

It was the best time of life, and I cherish those memories. They make me glad of home.

It therefore goes without saying that when I started writing, I wanted to write a story about that childhood. Growing up under God’s enormous skies—under the striking, magnificent African skies. So when I finally began writing, I wrote:

—

“Once upon a time on a chilly August morning like all the seasons past, a drowsy village lying on the slopes of the Kerio escarpment steadily awakens.

Outside, the wind hauls and whimpers against the walls of a wooden two bedroomed house.

Someone stirs in their sleep and a bed creaks. A small radio coughs and stutters in the adjacent bedroom as father tunes it to a clear frequency.

A small girl of about eight drags herself out of bed and yanks a jacket from the pile of clothes carelessly stuffed into a big woven basket at the corner of the room. Lifting herself up and standing on the soles of her feet, she unlatches the bedroom door from the nail that kept it shut, staggers towards the living room’s door and draws it open. The cold wind stinks her face and she winces, holds her jacket tightly around her chest and pulls the hood over her head. She steps out and stands on the top stair pulling the door shut behind her.

The year is 1994.

Two planting seasons from when she lay on her back staring into starry skies while listening to her older brothers talk of rumors of ethnic clashes drawing closer to them by the day and the horrors of alleged slaughtering of innocent lives. Stories of death and blood in its wake. All those killings triggered by political manipulations of long simmering ethnic tensions over land and power.

Peace was in a turbulence and the uncertainty that engulfed the nation then and the fear in the faces of many made the days unbearable. And even before the war was barely over and the soil washed off the stain of innocent human blood, the highlands of Keiyo was subsequently ravaged by horrors of a yellow fever disease that swept over the land like wildfire…..”

—

But at some point, I paused. I was sure this would make a terrific short story—but too short for a book. And I wanted a book.

That’s when I remembered the other story.

The story of womanhood. Of moving from an innocent girl in my father’s house to a woman who slowly realized that life for women is not a walk in the park. In fact, many women are dead on the inside—unable to voice their pain, unable to heal, unable to call it quits and live different lives.

I went on a quest to voice the ills that women go through. The values they desire. The insolence they endure.

And yet, many of these women were like me once—full of life, bursting with laughter, running through open fields with the boys and their dogs. Innocent to life’s impending burdens.

And that birthed us LENAH!!- A composition of these two worlds.

A beautiful contrast in this mysterious existence.

The Blessed Hope: A Journey of Faith and Renewal by Ivy Jebichy

Religion & Spiritual
KShs500.00
It is three in the morning, and I am fully awake. Lying here in my bed, and staring into the suffocating darkness, where shadows seem to breathe. I would rather be deep in some sweet sleep, but I am glad I am awake so I can stand against the devil and tell him to his face that he is a liar and a loser. I just had a nightmare. I was at war with the devil, actually, but unlike the many other nightmares I have had in my dreams, this time, I awoke, and I was not scared. I will first go ahead and gladly tell you that I gave my life to Jesus almost two months ago. I am glad about the new change in me because I have never found anything or anywhere safer than being with God. With that, I am simply telling you that there is peace and real life with Jesus. The confidence I have here in giving you this joyous piece of news is not mine but the Lord’s. And going back to the nightmare, I want to confirm that I had actually seen a huge bird on top of a tree last evening, and I pointed it out to my friend. I am not really sure what kind of bird it was, but I think it was a giant owl, for I have seen at least one, if not several in the village. And what would a bird be doing, sitting comfortably on a branch in the cover of darkness, save for an owl, which happens to be nocturnal anyway? The thing is, the bird I had seen attacked me in my dreams. It was an owl. A giant, black, ominous owl. Owls have always unsettled me. Their hoots being an eerie call, a whisper of bad luck, or perhaps even a herald of death. In my dream, I am home, upcountry, in my night attire, ready for bed when a knock sounds on the door. I open it, and there stands the one guy I like most. I usher him in, and suddenly, an owl starts hooting just outside the house. I have never liked those sounds. They disturb the quiet of the night, and again, they are unsettling, depressing, dreadful, revolting and, like I had said, ill-omened. I have never been known to tolerate them either, if I can help it, so in this case, I want to go out and try to drive it away. Unbeknownst to me, the devil has declared war. He sent the brother to tempt me in the one way a woman can be compromised. The devil sought to make me sin, to make me weak. The man was also in the faith, so I didn’t see that coming, but I passed the test, picked up my coat, and ran out. The devil is sly, he knew I would go out rebuking the bird like I have done so many times before. So he lay in wait to devour me. But my God is true and faithful. The God of my salvation is my strong tower and my shield against any weapon formed against me. And in Him, I have the confidence that every tongue that rises against me in judgment shall be condemned. So I walked around the compound, peeking at trees with the help of the moon that shone bright. Then I spotted it. Bloodshot, huge eyes- the most terrifying bird I have ever seen- staring at me menacingly. It sits on a branch, watching, seemingly huge and gloomy, poised to attack. Then it soars toward me, talons outstretched, a shadow of death in the moonlight. I froze. There is only one being who can save me, the one being who is above and beyond any other, the one name I hold onto and consider holy- the name Jesus. I shouted and rebuked it by the blood of Jesus; I tell it he is nothing save a loser and a coward. I recited the verse where it is written that no weapon formed against me shall prosper, asking God to protect and preserve my life from the fear of the enemy. By this time, it was so close I had to dive behind the barbed wire near me to save my head. It comes down, hopping on its feet with its wings drawn out wide for balance, stopping just a few paces behind me. Then it turns and approaches me in the most assured and calm manner. I sense the end… but then, it suddenly stops, appearing to be struck by something. I take the golden chance to flee to safety, but just as I am about to open the door, it catches up with me. With my adrenaline on edge and my survival instinct on point, I grab a thick piece of wood leaning against the wall and swing with all my might, striking the evil bird with a sickening thud. It doesn’t die but loses balance and drops to the ground. I struck it repeatedly, again and again and again, until it died. By the time it lies still, I am shaking with fear and my mind flooded with disbelief. I had killed the damned bird. But one thing remains for sure- the Lord saved me. I arose from my sleep, and I feel peace, security, and triumph over opposition. Thank you, Lord, for saving me. I suppose all I need to remember is that God will never let me down. For greater is He that is in me than he that is in the world -(1 John 4:4). But I do wonder, what really happens should such a dream turn tragic?

Replenishing the Earth

Books, African Interest
KShs1,495.00 KShs1,421.00
Brief Summary An impassioned call to heal the wounds of our planet and ourselves through the tenets of our spiritual traditions, from a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize It is so easy, in our modern world, to feel disconnected from the physical earth. Despite dire warnings and escalating concern over the state of our planet, many people feel out of touch with the natural world. Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai has spent decades working with the Green Belt Movement to help women in rural Kenya plant—and sustain—millions of trees. With their hands in the dirt, these women often find themselves empowered and "at home” in a way they never did before. Maathai wants to impart that feeling to everyone, and believes that the key lies in traditional spiritual values: love for the environment, self-betterment, gratitude and respect, and a commitment to service. While educated in the Christian tradition, Maathai draws inspiration from many faiths, celebrating the Jewish mandate tikkun olam ("repair the world”) and renewing the Japanese term mottainai ("don’t waste”). Through rededication to these values, she believes, we might finally bring about healing for ourselves and the earth. ISBN:2147483647 Author:Wangari Maathai

Unbowed by Wangari Maathai

Born in a rural Kenyan village in 1940, Wangari Maathai was already an iconoclast as a child, determined to get an education even though most African girls then were uneducated. In her remarkable and inspiring autobiography, she tells of her studies with Catholic missionaries, earning bachelors and master's degrees in the United States, and becoming the first woman both to earn a PhD and to head a university department in Kenya. She tells of her numerous run-ins with the brutal government of Daniel arap Moi and of the political and personal reasons that compelled her, in 1977, to establish the Green Belt Movement, which spread from Kenya across Africa, and which helps restore indigenous forests while assisting rural women by paying them to plant trees in their villages. Maathai's extraordinary courage and determination helped transform Kenya's government into the democracy in which she now serves as Deputy Minister for the Environment and Natural Resources and as a Member of Parliament. Eventually her achievement was internationally recognized in the Nobel Peace Prize, awarded in recognition of her 'contribution to sustainable development, human rights, and peace'. In Unbowed, we are in the presence of a hugely charismatic yet humble woman whose remarkable story carries with it an inspiring message of hope. Hers is an extraordinary story, spanning different worlds and changing times, and revealing what the courage, determination, tenacity and humour of one good woman can achieve; how as small a thing as planting a seedling and watering it can made all the difference in the world.

Brief Summary Fifteen-year-old Kambili’s world is circumscribed by the high walls and frangipani trees of her family compound. Her wealthy Catholic father, under whose shadow Kambili lives, while generous and politically active in the community, is repressive and fanatically religious at home. When Nigeria begins to fall apart under a military coup, Kambili’s father sends her and her brother away to stay with their aunt, a University professor, whose house is noisy and full of laughter. There, Kambili and her brother discover a life and love beyond the confines of their father’s authority. The visit will lift the silence from their world and, in time, give rise to devotion and defiance that reveal themselves in profound and unexpected ways. The Challenge for Africa by Wangari Maathai

KShs1,900.00 KShs1,790.00
Brief Summary Wangari Maathai, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and founder of the Green Belt Movement, offers a refreshingly unique perspective on the challenges facing Africa, even as she calls for a moral revolution among Africans themselves, who, she argues, are culturally deracinated, adrift between worlds. The troubles of Africa today are severe and wide-ranging. Yet what we see of them in the media, more often than not, are tableaux vivantes connoting poverty, dependence, and desperation. Wangari Maathai presents a different vision, informed by her three decades as an environmental activist and campaigner for democracy. She illuminates the complex and dynamic nature of the continent, and offers "hardheaded hope” and "realistic options” for change and improvement. With clarity of expression, Maathai analyzes the most egregious "bottlenecks to development in Africa,” occurring at the international, national, and individual levels–cultural upheaval and enduring poverty among them–and deftly describes what Africans can and need to do for themselves, stressing all the while responsibility and accountability.Impassioned and empathetic, The Challenge for Africa is a book of immense importance. Through My African Eyes by Jeff Koinange

KShs3,890.00 KShs3,500.00
"Through My African Eyes!” is a concise narrative covering some of the major players in 20th century African politics. The book is rich with insights into the personal and intellectual underpinnings of many historical events in Africa. Chronicles of some pretty interesting Africans from warlords, soldiers, victims and politicians lend insight into Jeff’s celebrated journalistic style. Through his eyes we are made to understand the role of journalist’s as binders of our social fabric. "Through My African Eyes” is very informative and quite humorous, utilizing a modern quick precise narrative style. He is able to describe complex global geopolitical issues with incisive analysis. The book surf’s one through the experience with speed and historical accuracy. We see the visual the words impart, rather than being stuck in prose. The best part is being able to walk the journey informed by a largely Kenyan perspective. Jeff outlines clearly how biased reportage can splinter any society and promote its disintegration by pandering to people’s lowest instincts. The narrative draws out lesser-known aspects of his life. Jeff’s unblinking examination of his grandfather’s life is historically illuminating and serves as a symbolic bridge between the beginning and the end of colonialism. Jeff is the first African ever to win a Television Emmy and a George Foster Peabody. He merited the Vernon Jarrett Award as well as the prestigious! ‘Prix Bayeux’ for reportage that arrested global crises."

The ideal introduction to the genius of Ernest Hemingway, "The Snows of Kilimanjaro and Other Stories" contains ten of Hemingway's most acclaimed and popular works of short fiction. Selected from "Winner Take Nothing, Men Without Women, " and "The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories. This collection includes "The Killers," the first of Hemingway's mature stories to be accepted by an American periodical; the autobiographical "Fathers and Sons," which alludes, for the first time in Hemingway's career, to his father's suicide; "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber," a "brilliant fusion of personal observation, hearsay and invention," wrote Hemingway's biographer, Carlos Baker; and the title story itself, of which Hemingway said: "I put all the true stuff in," with enough material, he boasted, to fill four novels. The Fortunes of Africa by Martin Meredith

Books, African Interest
KShs2,500.00 KShs2,190.00
Africa has been coveted for its riches ever since the era of the Pharaohs. In past centuries, it was the lure of gold, ivory, and slaves that drew fortune-seekers, merchant-adventurers, and conquerors from afar. In modern times, the focus of attention is on oil, diamonds, and other valuable minerals. Land was another prize. The Romans relied on their colonies in northern Africa for vital grain shipments to feed the population of Rome. Arab invaders followed in their wake, eventually colonizing the entire region. More recently, foreign corporations have acquired huge tracts of land to secure food supplies needed abroad, just as the Romans did. In this vast and vivid panorama of history, Martin Meredith follows the fortunes of Africa over a period of 5,000 years. With compelling narrative, he traces the rise and fall of ancient kingdoms and empires; the spread of Christianity and Islam; the enduring quest for gold and other riches; the exploits of explorers and missionaries; and the impact of European colonization. He examines, too, the fate of modern African states and concludes with a glimpse of their future. His cast of characters includes religious leaders, mining magnates, warlords, dictators, and many other legendary figures—among them Mansa Musa, ruler of the medieval Mali empire, said to be the richest man the world has ever known. "I speak of Africa,” Shakespeare wrote, "and of golden joys.” This is history on an epic scale."

On October 23, 2009, British couple Paul and Rachel Chandler were kidnapped from their sailing boat off the archipelago of the Seychelles. Naval forces and search rescue centres did not swing into full action until the story broke on October 27 when Somalis informed the media that the couple were in their hands. The yacht, S/Y Lynn Rival, was found the next day by naval forces, abandoned off the Central Somali Coast. After the attack, Paul and Rachel were taken first onto a previously hijacked merchant ship, the MV Kota Wajar, and then onto land near Ceel Huur, north of Harardheere on the coast of Somalia. The couple were released, over a year later, on November 14, 2010, after a reported $800,000 ransom was paid. In this remarkable book, Paul and Rachel Chandler exclusively recount their ordeal, revealing the entire breathtaking, inspiring and poignant story behind the dramatic headlines. At the heart of their survival was their unshakable belief in each other and their determination to survive against all the odds, making Hostage an unlikely love story, in which death, at times, seemed preferable to being separated. Dreams from My Father by Barack Obama

Books, African Interest
KShs2,000.00 KShs1,890.00
Nine years before the Senate campaign that made him one of the most influential and compelling voices in American politics, Barack Obama published this lyrical, unsentimental, and powerfully affecting memoir, which became a #1 New York Times bestseller when it was reissued in 2004. Dreams from My Father tells the story of Obama’s struggle to understand the forces that shaped him as the son of a black African father and white American mother—a struggle that takes him from the American heartland to the ancestral home of his great-aunt in the tiny African village of Alego. Obama opens his story in New York, where he hears that his father—a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man—has died in a car accident. The news triggers a chain of memories as Barack retraces his family’s unusual history: the migration of his mother’s family from small-town Kansas to the Hawaiian islands; the love that develops between his mother and a promising young Kenyan student, a love nurtured by youthful innocence and the integrationist spirit of the early sixties; his father’s departure from Hawaii when Barack was two, as the realities of race and power reassert themselves; and Barack’s own awakening to the fears and doubts that exist not just between the larger black and white worlds but within himself. Propelled by a desire to understand both the forces that shaped him and his father’s legacy, Barack moves to Chicago to work as a community organizer. There, against the backdrop of tumultuous political and racial conflict, he works to turn back the mounting despair of the inner city. His story becomes one with those of the people he works with as he learns about the value of community, the necessity of healing old wounds, and the possibility of faith in the midst of adversity. Barack’s journey comes full circle in Kenya, where he finally meets the African side of his family and confronts the bitter truth of his father’s life. Traveling through a country racked by brutal poverty and tribal conflict, but whose people are sustained by a spirit of endurance and hope, Barack discovers that he is inescapably bound to brothers and sisters living an ocean away—and that by embracing their common struggles he can finally reconcile his divided inheritance. A searching meditation on the meaning of identity in America, Dreams from My Father might be the most revealing portrait we have of a major American leader—a man who is playing, and will play, an increasingly prominent role in healing a fractious and fragmented nation."

The Ghosts of Happy Valley: Searching for the Lost World of Africa’s Infamous Aristocrats by Juliet Barnes

Books, African Interest
KShs2,800.00
‘Happy Valley’ was the name given to the region of Kenya’s Central Highlands where a community of affluent, hedonistic white expatriates settled between the wars. Including the writer Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen). The pioneering aviator Beryl Markham and the troubled socialite Idina Sackville whose life was told in Frances Osborne’s bestselling The Bolter, the Happy Valley set’s notoriety was sealed in 1931 with the sensational – and still unsolved - murder of the Earl of Errol, the investigation of which laid bare the extent of the set’s decadence and irresponsibility, and made for another bestselling book in James Fox’s White Mischief. But what is left now? Juliet Barnes, who has lived in Kenya for many years, has set out to explore Happy Valley in a remarkable and indefatigable archaeological quest to find the homes and haunts of this extraordinary and vanished set of people – grand residences like Clouds up in the hills that once hosted opulent and scandalous parties. With the help of African guides, and guided by the memories of elderly expats she tracks down to the Muthiaga old enough to have first-hand memories of the likes of Idina and Lord Errol and the lives they led, what she finds - ruins reclaimed by luxuriant bush, tumbledown dwellings in which an African family ekes a subsistence living, or even a modest school – is a revelation of the state of modern Africa that makes the gilded era of the Happy Valley set seem even more fantastic. A book to set alongside such singular evocations of Africa and its strange colonial history as The Africa House, Happy Valley: The Biography is a mesmerising blend of travel narrative, social history and personal quest. The Thing Around Your Neck by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

KShs1,900.00 KShs1,690.00
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie burst onto the literary scene with her remarkable debut novel, Purple Hibiscus, which critics hailed as "one of the best novels to come out of Africa in years” (Baltimore Sun), with "prose as lush as the Nigerian landscape that it powerfully evokes” (The Boston Globe); The Washington Postcalled her "the twenty-first-century daughter of Chinua Achebe.” Her award-winning Half of a Yellow Sun became an instant classic upon its publication three years later, once again putting her tremendous gifts—graceful storytelling, knowing compassion, and fierce insight into her characters’ hearts—on display. Now, in her most intimate and seamlessly crafted work to date, Adichie turns her penetrating eye on not only Nigeria but America, in twelve dazzling stories that explore the ties that bind men and women, parents and children, Africa and the United States. In "A Private Experience,” a medical student hides from a violent riot with a poor Muslim woman whose dignity and faith force her to confront the realities and fears she’s been pushing away. In "Tomorrow is Too Far,” a woman unlocks the devastating secret that surrounds her brother’s death. The young mother at the center of "Imitation” finds her comfortable life in Philadelphia threatened when she learns that her husband has moved his mistress into their Lagos home. And the title story depicts the choking loneliness of a Nigerian girl who moves to an America that turns out to be nothing like the country she expected; though falling in love brings her desires nearly within reach, a death in her homeland forces her to reexamine them.

Brief Summary The four-million-copy international bestseller of the incredible love story between a European woman and an African warrior The White Masai combines adventure and the pursuit of passion in a page-turning story of two star-crossed lovers from vastly different backgrounds. Corinne, a European entrepreneur, meets Lketinga, a Samburu warrior, while on vacation in Mombasa on Kenya's glamorous coast. Despite language and cultural barriers, they embark on an impossible love affair. Corinne uproots her life to move to Africa—not the romantic Africa of popular culture, but the Africa of the Masai, in the middle of the isolated bush, where five-foot-tall huts made from cow dung serve as homes. Undaunted by wild animals, hunger, and bouts with tropical diseases, she tries to forge a life with Lketinga. But slowly the dream starts to crumble when she can no longer ignore the chasm between their two vastly different cultures. A story that taps into our universal belief in the power of love, The White Masai is at once a hopelessly romantic love story, a gripping adventure yarn, and a compulsively good read."
