Initially written as ‘Because we are People’, Lyna Dommie Namasaka’s ‘Feminism for the African Woman’ is an argument for the African feminist discourse. It uses historical records, collections of personal stories and statistics to explore African feminism dynamics in attempts to bridge the gap that exists between African modern feminists and the local realities of the other half of African women. It attempts to bridge the disconnect these differences have created and avoid the potential aftermath of this disconnect. More importantly, the book counters the widespread narrative that Africans live in a post feminist era.

Description

African feminism exists independent of the white gaze to eradicate gender inequality in Africa. To create societies where women have capacity for choices, access and human dignity. To create systems that empower women rather than build on the reactive trauma expressed against male violence in Africa. To make Africans aware that African women are deserving of the humanity accorded to men rather than to be a tool to disparage men. To drown out the socialised anti-humanitarian propaganda that surrounds the discourse on the equality of the sexes. To dismantle the patriarchy rather than to invent new ways of surviving it.

What I loved most is how you’ve talked about feminism in a way that feels real and relatable to the experiences of African women. I’ve realized that being strong, ambitious and independent doesn’t always mean having the freedom or opportunities to become everything you want to be. Sometimes, even with so much potential, life and circumstances can stand in the way. Knowing a little about Namasaka’s own journey made me appreciate her writing even more, because there’s something special about someone who can turn personal experiences and difficult realities into conversations that make others think. The book also made me question how much women get to choose, and how much is shaped by culture, religion, family and society’s expectations. I especially love that she doesn’t try to tell African women who they should be, but instead reminds us that we deserve the freedom to figure that out for ourselves. For me, this book isn’t just about feminism; it’s about understanding ourselves, recognising the things that hold us back and believing in the possibility of becoming who we truly want to be. It’s the kind of book that leaves you thinking long after you’ve finished reading it.

This book is such an eye opener. Narrations of real life experiences that the author has had made me open my eyes and actually get a clear understanding of what respect and disrespect to women is. I used to take some actions from men lightly, for example the sexual compliments I get from men and random inappropriate physical contact from men. This read changed my perspective of such. I learnt to speak out and address any form of assault. I also have to mention how the author’s language and presentation of ideas caught my attention. Once you start a chapter there’s that urge to keep on reading. Great book Lyna!

Against All Odds by Kalonzo Musyoka

Books, AutoBiography
UShs90,050.00 UShs83,750.00
AGAINST ALL ODDS: THE STORY OF STEPHEN KALONZO MUSYOKA, is tale of hope, courage, resilience, determination and faith. It is a story of a village boy who rose from the ashes of poverty in the dry, thirsty and forsaken part of rural Kenya into political stardom. Musyoka, the son of a peasant farmer-cum-shopkeeper, grew up in Mwingi district in Kenya’s Eastern province. His place of birth was and still remains one of the remotest regions in Kenya. The book tells the story of the journey of his life, so far. It finds its beginnings in the local village in Mwingi, where he was born. It traverses time and space to see him through the village school, high school and university, even as it gives a rendition of the various vicissitudes that informed his formative years. From there, it travels on to his early experiments with building a career in legal practice, before plunging into the mud of politics, the world of diplomacy and the challenges of statehood and statesmanship. Being his mother’s only son, Musyoka grew up under the gunfire, and terror of the Shifta bandits. His mother lived in constant fear of witchcraft. The evil eye, she thought, would take her son away. The biography tells of Musyoka’s struggles to gain meaningful education, overcome poverty and eventual entry into Kenyan politics. It narrates his rise to stardom, trials and tribulations and his strong Christian faith. It documents his crucial role as a peacemaker since his schooldays. The impact he had on the Sudanese and Somali peace negotiations. His fears, anxieties and survival instincts. It is a tale of respect for elders. A tale of a man determined to walk the straight path of truthfulness, honesty and integrity. It is a tale of a loving husband and father. It tells of his loyalty, his desire for a Kenya that is not just God fearing but free from want, poverty, corruption and hunger. His eyes are set on a country whose economy will one day compete with those of the developed world; a country whose people will walk and live free from fear of insecurity; a nation whose people will enjoy a free, high quality education, social security and good health. The biography details his political ambitions to ascend to Kenya’s presidency; his dreams, his hopes and his aspirations for Kenya. Caleb Atemi is a renowned writer, communications and public relations consultant. Atemi, a former News Editor with the Nation Media Group and journalism lecturer, is working on other biographies detailing the life and times of prominent Kenyan personalities. UShs45,050.00 UShs35,750.00
Chama to Conglomerate' captures the global phenomenon of group investment, whereby like-minded people pool their resources together on a regular basis to pursue business projects with long-term returns. This book shows how they can grow from a small club of investors to a big corporate entity. Chamas (informal investment groups) are an African phenomenon with a history that can be traced way back. There have become really common and come about where individuals come together to form groups with a social and commercial agenda. Unfortunately most of these chamas have a very short lifespan and do not live up to the expectations of founding members. According to Tony Wainaina, chamas as an investment group phenomenon is a sleeping giant with far greater potential for economic growth. The book begins by explaining the value of working and investing in a group and the power of compounding. It then goes on to explain the steps in establishing, forming and structuring your investment group. The use of Trans- Century Limited, recognized as the most successful investment group in East and Central Africa, as a role model for aspiring investment groups is given in detail, together with lessons to be learnt from their success. "I returned to the hangar quite drunk and forgot to fasten my rifle to my waist. When I woke up in the morning, I realized that my rifle, loaded with six bullets, had been stolen. In the military, and especially during a state of war, losing one's rifle was considered a serious crime. It is tantamount to willingly handing over a weapon to the enemy to fight you ...'."- Rev. Dr John G. Gatti From an early age, John Gan) yearns for and cherishes his independence. At the end of his primary school education, instead of joining a teacher training college, young Gaul opts to travel to Nairobi, believing a better world awaited him there. Much later, after scratching hard, he discovers this `better' world when he joins the army. Serving in Ethiopia and Somaliland, and finally traveling to London for the Victory Parade, thrills young Gatti despite the dangers involved. It is at the peak of his career in the military and after receiving the most coveted awards that John Gatti makes another decision: to retire from the army and work closer home. Gatti, the civilian, engages in different jobs before working as a clerk at Kambili Mission Church. "It had nothing to do with my Christian faith ... it was purely for the salary and my desire to work and live near my family," he confesses. It was during his service at Kambui that he encountered the 'flame' that continues to burn in him as he allows himself to be used to transform others. Fan into Flame is a multilayered narrative with the nuances of a thriller as the author unveils dramatic events that took place when he was a soldier in Ethiopia and the serenity that he encounters after his 'rebirth'. The story spans through the history of colonial and independent Kenya. Rev. John Gata's passion for his work as a servant of God, brings out the best in everyone he interacts with, no matter what their station in life. His role as an agent of peace and positive change in the church, his country and beyond, cannot be overemphasized.

Unbowed by Wangari Maathai

Books, African Interest
Rated 5.00 out of 5
UShs75,050.00 UShs60,050.00
Born in a rural Kenyan village in 1940, Wangari Maathai was already an iconoclast as a child, determined to get an education even though most African girls then were uneducated. In her remarkable and inspiring autobiography, she tells of her studies with Catholic missionaries, earning bachelors and master's degrees in the United States, and becoming the first woman both to earn a PhD and to head a university department in Kenya. She tells of her numerous run-ins with the brutal government of Daniel arap Moi and of the political and personal reasons that compelled her, in 1977, to establish the Green Belt Movement, which spread from Kenya across Africa, and which helps restore indigenous forests while assisting rural women by paying them to plant trees in their villages. Maathai's extraordinary courage and determination helped transform Kenya's government into the democracy in which she now serves as Deputy Minister for the Environment and Natural Resources and as a Member of Parliament. Eventually her achievement was internationally recognized in the Nobel Peace Prize, awarded in recognition of her 'contribution to sustainable development, human rights, and peace'. In Unbowed, we are in the presence of a hugely charismatic yet humble woman whose remarkable story carries with it an inspiring message of hope. Hers is an extraordinary story, spanning different worlds and changing times, and revealing what the courage, determination, tenacity and humour of one good woman can achieve; how as small a thing as planting a seedling and watering it can made all the difference in the world.

Through My African Eyes by Jeff Koinange

Books, African Interest
Rated 5.00 out of 5
UShs116,750.00 UShs105,050.00
"Through My African Eyes!” is a concise narrative covering some of the major players in 20th century African politics. The book is rich with insights into the personal and intellectual underpinnings of many historical events in Africa. Chronicles of some pretty interesting Africans from warlords, soldiers, victims and politicians lend insight into Jeff’s celebrated journalistic style. Through his eyes we are made to understand the role of journalist’s as binders of our social fabric. "Through My African Eyes” is very informative and quite humorous, utilizing a modern quick precise narrative style. He is able to describe complex global geopolitical issues with incisive analysis. The book surf’s one through the experience with speed and historical accuracy. We see the visual the words impart, rather than being stuck in prose. The best part is being able to walk the journey informed by a largely Kenyan perspective. Jeff outlines clearly how biased reportage can splinter any society and promote its disintegration by pandering to people’s lowest instincts. The narrative draws out lesser-known aspects of his life. Jeff’s unblinking examination of his grandfather’s life is historically illuminating and serves as a symbolic bridge between the beginning and the end of colonialism. Jeff is the first African ever to win a Television Emmy and a George Foster Peabody. He merited the Vernon Jarrett Award as well as the prestigious! ‘Prix Bayeux’ for reportage that arrested global crises."

Renowned novelist, poet, playwright, and literary critic Ngugi wa Thiong’o was a student at a prestigious, British-run boarding school near Nairobi when the tumultuous Mau Mau Uprising for independence and Kenyan sovereignty gripped his country. While he enjoyed scouting trips and chess tournaments, his family home was razed to the ground and his brother, a member of the insurgency, was captured by the British and taken to a concentration camp. But Ngugi could not escape history, and eventually found himself jailed after a run in with the forces of colonialism. Ngugi richly and poignantly evokes the experiences that would transform him into a world-class writer and, as a political dissident, a moral compass to us all. A winning celebration of the implacable determination of youth and the power of hope, here is a searing account of the history of a man—and the story of a nation.

Trailblazer: Breaking Through in Kenya by Peter Kuguru

Books, African Interest
UShs57,050.00 UShs45,050.00
As a child during the Mau Mau Emergency, Peter Kuguru personally witnessed scenes of horrific brutality. He and his family experienced great hardship and upheaval as the British colonial regime acted ruthlessly to crush the freedom movement. As Peter made his way slowly through school at this terrible time, he must have despaired about his future prospects in life. But the euphoria of Independence and the promise it held, coupled with the values of hard work and education insistently drilled into him by his father, encouraged him to dream big. From a young schoolboy paparazzo snapping pictures of his schoolmates for a few cents, to the courageous and far-sighted industrialist who dared to tackle Coca Cola head-on, Peter Kuguru has travelled a trailblazing journey. At the same time he has never forsaken a fundamental, heartfelt personal commitment to improving the welfare of the people of Mathira. It was this dedication that led him to follow his father, a powerful oak of a man, into politics. Now, in this book, for the first time, a candidate in a Kenyan Parliamentary Election discloses the tricks, deceit and skullduggery that tragically characterize campaigns at the grassroots. These corrupt, dirty, evil and underhand maneuvers have transformed our electoral process into a mere travesty of democracy, destroying the credibility of many politicians in the eyes of the trusting wananchi. This fascinating and revealing book has much to teach our budding industrialists, while leaving our political class with a great deal both to be ashamed of and to change radically and immediately.
