Description

Dr. Kavirondo has spent years crafting a life far from home, yet the shadow of his formidable father-Brigadier Fred Kavirondo-never truly releases him. When duty, mystery and cultural obligation draw him back to Kenya, he becomes entangled in a clandestine spiritual enterprise that transforms him into the feared and revered Jabandha spirit. What begins as an adventure spirals into a terrifying double life marked by secret wealth, ritual power and crushing loneliness.

As rumours swirl that he has become a criminal in hiding, Dr. Kavirondo must abandon the cave shrine, return to his mother, and confront the two women whose futures are bound to him: Bella Akiki, the Luo woman he marries under his father’s mandate, and Marietta, the wife in Mexico who believed he was dead.
Caught between truth and illusion, tradition and modernity, guilt and longing, Dr. Kavirondo faces a single haunting question: can a man return home whole after becoming a legend no one must ever know?

    DR KAVIRONDO
    Author: David Mailu
    Publisher: Mvua Press
    Reviewer: Literature Guru
    Rating: 3.5/5 ⭐

Dr Kavirondo is a thought-provoking novel that explores the political, social, cultural, and spiritual stagnation of the Luo community through the character of Dr Kavirondo and his family. The author uses the family’s experiences to interrogate the challenges facing a community, particularly the role of the elite in perpetuating or failing to address these problems.

Culture is also central to the narrative, particularly following the death of Kavirondo Senior and the ensuing struggle over inheritance, family wealth, and the question of widow inheritance. These elements provide an interesting entry point into discussions about changing cultural practices and the tension between tradition and modernity.

However, the novel has notable shortcomings, particularly in its cultural authenticity and representation. For Luo readers, some aspects may feel assumptive or insufficiently grounded in contemporary Luo realities. The treatment of widow inheritance, especially within the context of modern Kenya, raises questions about the accuracy and relevance of some of the cultural assumptions presented.

The portrayal of Brigadier’s involvement in politics and community affairs also feels somewhat far-fetched. His political engagement is so overt that it becomes difficult to reconcile with the realities of military culture, where serving officers would generally be expected to exercise considerable restraint in openly expressing political positions.

There are also instances of cultural misrepresentation and narrative choices that could have been handled more convincingly. For example, the introduction of Dr Kavirondo’s siblings feels largely unnecessary. They are mentioned early in the story but become conspicuously absent when the conflict over their father’s inheritance and protection of his wealth intensifies. This weakens the narrative and also raises questions about the cultural plausibility of the inheritance conflict. The story might have been more coherent had Kavirondo been presented as his father’s only child.

Interestingly, the novel ultimately locates the solution to the community’s problems in the cave and the spiritual awakening that follows. In this sense, the author appears to suggest that the challenges facing the Luo nation are not merely a crisis of leadership, but fundamentally a spiritual crisis requiring spiritual renewal.

Despite its flaws, Dr Kavirondo succeeds in doing what good literature should: it provokes conversation. Its themes of leadership, culture, inheritance, spirituality, identity, and the role of the elite provide considerable material for debate and interpretation.

It is particularly suitable for book clubs and literary discussions, where readers can engage critically with both the strengths and weaknesses of the author’s portrayal of Luo society.

    Overall: 3.5/5 ⭐

Brief Summary The sixth edition of Entrepreneurship and Small Firms has been fully revised and updated with contributions from leading academics in the field. Retaining the popular style of the previous editions and offering a clear and accessible introduction to the topic, this book provides a thorough coverage of entrepreneurial and small firm theory, concepts, evidence, policy and practice. Integrating academic theory with the day-to-day realities that entrepreneurs may encounter it furnishes the student with a comprehensive analysis of entrepreneurship. This well-established text is justly popular for its clear and accessible approach, presenting the key topics of an entrepreneurship module in an engaging yet rigorous style. The book covers wide ranging topics from the economic influences on entrepreneurship and sources of finance, to issues of diversity, family business and social entrepreneurship. New to this edition is a chapter on Corporate Entrepreneurship offering students a unique insight into entrepreneurship activities in larger businesses and organizations. A reorganized chapter structure for the sixth edition allows students to navigate the four parts of the text from introductory concepts, the domains of entrepreneurship, through to strategy and to implementation. Kenyas War of Independence Mau Mau and its Legacy of Resistance to Colonialism and Imperialism 1948-1990 by Shiraz Durrani

Books, African Interest
KShs2,500.00 KShs1,890.00
Kenya's War of Independence restores Kenya’s stolen history to its rightful place, stripped of colonial interpretations. In this expanded and revised version of his 1986 booklet, Kimaathi, Mau Mau's First Prime Minister of Kenya, Durrani covers Mau Mau’s resistance to colonialism and neo-colonialism and reflects on its ideology, organisation and achievements. He sees Mau Mau in the larger context of Kenya’s war of independence and looks at the influence of organised, radical trade unions as the engine of resistance, linking economic with political demands of working people. Additional chapters document the post-independence resistance by the underground December Twelve Movement-Mwakenya. Durrani captures the dynamism of transition from colonialism to neo-colonialism: "Imperialism replaced colonialism, African elites replaced White Settlers, neo-colonial government replaced colonial government. Resistance changed from the War of Independence to War of Economic Independence. Worker and peasant resistance is evident once again. History is on the march”.

Black Rednecks and White Liberals by Thomas Sowell – ebook

Accessories
KShs1,500.00 KShs1,200.00
This explosive new book challenges many of the long-prevailing assumptions about blacks, about Jews, about Germans, about slavery, and about education. Plainly written, powerfully reasoned, and backed with a startling array of documented facts, Black Rednecks and White Liberals takes on not only the trendy intellectuals of our times but also such historic interpreters of American life as Alexis de Tocqueville and Frederick Law Olmsted. In a series of long essays, this book presents an in-depth look at key beliefs behind many mistaken and dangerous actions, policies, and trends. It presents eye-opening insights into the historical development of the ghetto culture that is today wrongly seen as a unique black identity--a culture cheered on toward self-destruction by white liberals who consider themselves "friends" of blacks. An essay titled "The Real History of Slavery" presents a jolting re-examination of that tragic institution and the narrow and distorted way it is too often seen today. The reasons for the venomous hatred of Jews, and of other groups like them in countries around the world, are explored in an essay that asks, "Are Jews Generic?" Misconceptions of German history in general, and of the Nazi era in particular, are also re-examined. So too are the inspiring achievements and painful tragedies of black education in the United States. "Black Rednecks and White Liberals" is the capstone of decades of outstanding research and writing on racial and cultural issues by Thomas Sowell.

The Magic of Saida by M. G. Vassanji

Accessories
KShs2,500.00 KShs1,890.00
The Magic of Saida tells the haunting story of Kamal, a successful Canadian doctor who, in middle age and after decades in North America, decides to return to his homeland of East Africa to find his childhood sweetheart, Saida. Kamal's journey is motivated by a combination of guilt, hope, and the desire to unravel the mysteries of his childhood--mysteries compounded by the fact that Kamal is the son of an absent Indian father from a well-to-do family and a Swahili African mother of slave ancestry. Through a series of flashbacks, we watch Kamal's early years in the ancient coastal town of Kilwa, where he grows up in a world of poverty but also of poetry, sustained by his friendship with the magical Saida. This world abruptly ends when Kamal is sent away by his mother to live with his father's family in the city. There, the academically gifted boy grows up as a "dark Indian," eventually going to university and departing for Canada. Left behind to her traditional fate is Saida, now a beautiful young woman. Decades later, Kamal's guilt pulls him back to Kilwa . . . where he discovers what happened to Saida during a harrowing night of sinister rites. This complex, revelatory, sweeping and shocking book, is a towering testament to the magical literary powers of M.G. Vassanji.

The Numbers Game: Why Everything You Know About Football is Wrong by Chris Anderson and David Sally

Accessories
KShs1,890.00 KShs1,590.00
Football has always been a numbers game: 4-4-2, the big number 9 and 3 points for a win. But what if up until now we've been focusing on the wrong numbers? What if the numbers that really matter, the ones that hold the key to winning matches, are actually 2.66, 53.4, 50/50, and 0 > 1? What if managers only make a 15% difference? What if Chelsea should have bought Darren Bent? In this incisive, myth-busting book, Chris Anderson, former goalkeeper turned football statistics guru, and David Sally, former baseball pitcher turned behavioural economist, show that every shred of knowledge we can gather can help us to love football and understand it even more. You'll discover why stopping a goal is more valuable than scoring one, why corners should be taken short, and why it is better to improve your worst player than to buy a superstar. You'll never play, or watch, a game of football in quite the same way again. The Numbers Game is essential reading for football fans everywhere and will also appeal to readers who loved Moneyball and Freakonomics.
