The first criminal investigation textbook written by an African practitioner, for the African investigator.

What happens when the modern police system fails to deliver justice, and communities turn to methods that have worked for centuries?

In Dead Reckoning I, retired senior intelligence and investigation officer J. Chelal draws on over thirty-five years of operational experience to write the book he wished had existed when he was a young constable. The result is a groundbreaking text that teaches modern investigative protocol, crime scene management, evidence handling, and the investigation of every major crime type, while doing something no other textbook does: taking seriously the African realities within which investigation actually occurs.

From the principles of investigation to the courtroom, this book walks the investigator through every stage of the criminal justice process. It includes detailed protocols for investigating homicide, robbery, traffic incidents, drug trafficking, cyber crime, community disputes, and gender-based violence. It explains the court process step by step. It confronts the contemporary challenges of political violence, artificial intelligence, and the exploitation of young Africans abroad, the neo-slavery of Kazi Majuu.

Most criminal investigation textbooks are written by Western academics for Western students, in contexts where forensic laboratories are available, witness protection is functional, and the community trusts the police. African investigators work in a different reality.

This book speaks directly to that reality. It acknowledges the resource constraints. It addresses the political pressures. It examines the spiritual dimensions of crime and justice that the formal system ignores. And it makes a compelling, evidence-based argument: that before colonialism introduced the modern police, Africa had its own effective systems of investigation, and those systems, the elder’s council, the investigative oath, the community truth-finding ritual, still function today. The investigator who ignores them is investigating with one eye closed.

Dead Reckoning I: The African Criminal Investigation

By J. Chelal

Foreword by Dr. Francis Sang, Former Director of Criminal Investigation, Kenya

What This Book Covers

From the principles of investigation to the courtroom, this book walks the investigator through every stage of the criminal justice process. It includes detailed protocols for investigating homicide, robbery, traffic incidents, drug trafficking, cyber crime, community disputes, and gender-based violence. It explains the court process step by step. It confronts the contemporary challenges of political violence, artificial intelligence, and the exploitation of young Africans abroad, the neo-slavery of Kazi Majuu.

What Makes This Book Different

Who Should Read This Book

  • Police officers and criminal investigators seeking a practical handbook that addresses the realities of their work
  • University students of criminology, criminal justice, law, and security studies
  • Legal professionals who need to understand the investigative process behind the cases they prosecute or defend
  • Anyone interested in African justice systems, indigenous knowledge, and the future of policing on the continent

KShs2,000.00 KShs1,890.00
An exciting literary debut: the unflinching and powerful story of a young girl's journey out of Zimbabwe and to America. Darling is only ten years old, and yet she must navigate a fragile and violent world. In Zimbabwe, Darling and her friends steal guavas, try to get the baby out of young Chipo's belly, and grasp at memories of Before. Before their homes were destroyed by paramilitary policemen, before the school closed, before the fathers left for dangerous jobs abroad. But Darling has a chance to escape: she has an aunt in America. She travels to this new land in search of America's famous abundance only to find that her options as an immigrant are perilously few. NoViolet Bulawayo's debut calls to mind the great storytellers of displacement and arrival who have come before her-from Junot Diaz to Zadie Smith to J.M. Coetzee-while she tells a vivid, raw story all her own.

Kidneys for the King by Miguna Miguna

Books, African Interest
KShs2,890.00 KShs2,400.00
Kidneys for the King has a carefully developed structure. The first and the last chapter focus on the (de)construction of two public figures – Chief Justice Willy Mutunga and Prime Minister Raila Odinga. These two embodiments of the promise of radical transformation and their abysmal failures frame Miguna’s exposition of the trouble with Kenya in chapters 2, 3, 4 and 5. Against the background of the reception of Peeling Back the Mask in the local and international press; on television and on the Internet, Miguna details the rot of our society. A polluted police force; rampant corruption; the vagaries of an irresponsible media; a vile political culture; wayward leaders, a gullible electorate and the truant, half-hearted attempts at implementing a progressive Constitution.

Desert Flower by Waris Dirie

Books, African Interest
KShs1,690.00 KShs1,400.00
Waris Dirie (the name means desert flower) lives a double life - by day she is a famous model and UN spokeswoman on women's rights in Africa, at night she dreams of her native Somalia. Waris, one of 12 children, was born into a traditional family of desert nomads in East Africa. She remembers her early childhood as carefree- racing camels and moving on with her family to the next grazing spot - until it came her turn to meet the old woman who administered the ancient custom imposed on most Somalian girls: circumcision. Waris suffered this torture when she was just five years old. Then, aged 12, when her father attempted to arrange a marriage with a 60 year old stranger in exchange for five camels - she took flight. After an extraordinary escape through the dangerous desert she made her way to London and worked as a maid for the Somalian ambassador until that family returned home. Penniless and speaking little English, she became a janitor in McDonalds where she was famously discovered by a fashion photographer. Her story is a truly inspirational and extraordinary self-portrait of a remarkable woman whose spirit is as breathtaking as her beauty.

Sowing the Mustard Seed by Yoweri Museveni

Books, African Interest
KShs2,990.00 KShs2,500.00
Sowing the Mustard Seed is a story of unflinching bravery. It is the story of unwavering search for a true, revolutionary and development-oriented leadership. The author takes the reader on a tell-all journey of the sacrifice that he and other young Ugandans decided to take in order to liberate their country from the jaws of helplessness to which the first post-independence governments had conspired to consign it. In this spell-binding tale, told in the first-person voice, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni traces the journey of his life from his first few months on earth, through his education, after which he and other patriots embarked on a journey of seeking empowerment to overthrow the despotic regime of Idi Amin Dada. It also delves into other wars, such as the long-drawn-out bid to neutralize Joseph Kony’s ragtag Lord’s Resistance Army and professionalizing the Ugandan army, after many years of sectarianism. Besides illuminating the struggles of the past, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni shares his vision for Uganda and the pillars he has over the years put in place as President to ensure Uganda’s future is secure both economically and socially. Written in easily accessible but highly Africanized language, it is a tale of unstinting focus and commitment that will both inform and inspire the reader.

Crossbones by Nuruddin Farah

Books, African Interest
KShs2,690.00 KShs2,390.00
A gripping new novel from today's "most important African novelist". (The New York Times Review of Books) A dozen years after his last visit, Jeebleh returns to his beloved Mogadiscio to see old friends. He is accompanied by his son-in-law, Malik, a journalist intent on covering the region's ongoing turmoil. What greets them at first is not the chaos Jeebleh remembers, however, but an eerie calm enforced by ubiquitous white-robed figures bearing whips. Meanwhile, Malik's brother, Ahl, has arrived in Puntland, the region notorious as a pirates' base. Ahl is searching for his stepson, Taxliil, who has vanished from Minneapolis, apparently recruited by an imam allied to Somalia's rising religious insurgency. The brothers' efforts draw them closer to Taxliil and deeper into the fabric of the country, even as Somalis brace themselves for an Ethiopian invasion. Jeebleh leaves Mogadiscio only a few hours before the borders are breached and raids descend from land and sea. As the uneasy quiet shatters and the city turns into a battle zone, the brothers experience firsthand the derailments of war. Completing the trilogy that began with Links and Knots, Crossbones is a fascinating look at individuals caught in the maw of zealotry, profiteering, and political conflict, by one of our most highly acclaimed international writers.

The Politics of Betrayal: Diary of a Kenyan Legislator by Joe Khamisi

Books, African Interest
Rated 4.00 out of 5
KShs1,900.00
Brief Summary The Politics of Betrayal: Diary of a Kenyan Legislator In this provocative treatise, author Joe Khamisi catalogues the events that took place during one of Kenya's most important periods in history. This period began in 2002, when Daniel Arap Moi stepped down after twenty-four years as president of Kenya. Khamisi reviews events up to the time when the country exploded in post-election violence in 2007 and the subsequent formation of the Grand Coalition Government between President Mwai Kibaki and Raila Amolo Odinga the following year. Khamisi explores the leadership betrayals that he believes are responsible for the political, social, and economic rot that are pervasive in Kenya. He recounts how he helped a presidential poll loser in the 2007 elections, Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, capture the coveted role of vice president. He also presents an in-depth analysis of Senator Barack Obama's visit to Kenya in 2006, as well as his own personal experiences with Barack's late father, who he describes as a person who "chain-smoked contentedly, drank copiously, and partied spiritedly." The Politics of Betrayal is critical reading for anyone who is interested in the transformation of Kenya from a one-party dictatorship to a pluralistic nation.

Beneath the Lions Gaze by Maaza Mengiste

Books, African Interest
KShs2,000.00 KShs1,890.00
An epic tale of a father and two sons, of betrayals and loyalties, of a family unraveling in the wake of Ethiopia’s revolution. This memorable, heartbreaking story opens in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 1974, on the eve of a revolution. Yonas kneels in his mother’s prayer room, pleading to his god for an end to the violence that has wracked his family and country. His father, Hailu, a prominent doctor, has been ordered to report to jail after helping a victim of state-sanctioned torture to die. And Dawit, Hailu’s youngest son, has joined an underground resistance movement—a choice that will lead to more upheaval and bloodshed across a ravaged Ethiopia. Beneath the Lion’s Gaze tells a gripping story of family, of the bonds of love and friendship set in a time and place that has rarely been explored in fiction. It is a story about the lengths human beings will go in pursuit of freedom and the human price of a national revolution. Emotionally gripping, poetic, and indelibly tragic, Beneath the Lion’s Gaze is a transcendent and powerful debut.

Dead Aid by Dambisa Moyo

Books, African Interest
KShs2,000.00 KShs1,790.00
In Dead Aid, Dambisa Moyo describes the state of postwar development policy in Africa today and unflinchingly confronts one of the greatest myths of our time: that billions of dollars in aid sent from wealthy countries to developing African nations has helped to reduce poverty and increase growth. In fact, poverty levels continue to escalate and growth rates have steadily declined—and millions continue to suffer. Provocatively drawing a sharp contrast between African countries that have rejected the aid route and prospered and others that have become aid-dependent and seen poverty increase, Moyo illuminates the way in which overreliance on aid has trapped developing nations in a vicious circle of aid dependency, corruption, market distortion, and further poverty, leaving them with nothing but the "need” for more aid. Debunking the current model of international aid promoted by both Hollywood celebrities and policy makers, Moyo offers a bold new road map for financing development of the world’s poorest countries that guarantees economic growth and a significant decline in poverty—without reliance on foreign aid or aid-related assistance.Dead Aid is an unsettling yet optimistic work, a powerful challenge to the assumptions and arguments that support a profoundly misguided development policy in Africa. And it is a clarion call to a new, more hopeful vision of how to address the desperate poverty that plagues millions.

Led by Faith by Immaculee Ilibagiza

Books, Religion & Spiritual
KShs3,000.00 KShs2,490.00
For three months in the spring of 1994, the African nation of Rwanda descended into one of the most vicious and bloody genocides the world has ever seen. Immaculée Ilibagiza, a young university student, miraculously survived the savage killing spree that left most of her family, friends, and a million of her fellow citizens dead. Immaculée’s remarkable story of survival was documented in her first book, Left to Tell: Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust. In Led By Faith, Immaculée takes us with her as her remarkable journey continues. Through her simple and eloquent voice, we experience her hardships and heartache as she struggles to survive and to find meaning and purpose in the aftermath of the holocaust. It is the story of a naïve and vulnerable young woman, orphaned and alone, navigating through a bleak and dangerously hostile world with only an abiding faith in God to guide and protect her. Immaculée fends off sinister new predators, seeks out and comforts scores of children orphaned by the genocide, and searches for love and companionship in a land where hatred still flourishes. Then, fearing again for her safety as Rwanda’s war-crime trials begin, Immaculée flees to America to begin a new chapter of her life as a refugee and immigrant—a stranger in a strange land. With the same courage and faith in God that led her through the darkness of genocide, Immaculée discovers a new life that was beyond her wildest dreams as a small girl in a tiny village in one of Africa’s poorest countries. It is in the United States, her adopted country, where Immaculée can finally look back at all that has happened to her and truly understand why God spared her life . . . so that she would be left to tell her story to the world.
