Description

Ten pioneering authors explore the complex heartbeat of the coast through evocative themes:

1. Rooted in History: Ancestry, spiritual heritage, and the ocean as a perpetual witness.
2. The Rhythm of the City: Raw urban life and social realism, exploring class divisions and the communal pulse of the Likoni Ferry.
3. Bridging Eras: Modern identity, where coastal youth navigate the digital age, connecting ancestral “slow technology” with the globalized future via the “Digital Dhow.”
Memory Etched in Stone and Flavor: A sensual journey through history via culinary heritage and architectural memory.
4. The Strength of Spirit: Resilience and perseverance against the “Indigestible Silence” of postponed dreams, illustrating the journey from struggle to labor and unwavering hope for a new dawn.
This edition includes a dedicated Reflections section for every story, providing themes, practical lessons, and provocative discussion questions. This book serves as an essential guide for educators, book clubs, and anyone seeking to understand the true soul of the Swahili Shore.

Authentic. Profound. Unfiltered.

With a Foreword by Prof. Jostinah Mwang’ombe, PhD, OGW

A People Called the Agikuyu: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow by Paul Njoroge

African History
KShs4,500.00 KShs4,300.00
A People Called the Agikuyu: Yesterday and Today … and Tomorrow? Around A.D. 1000, a community of Bantu-Thagicu speakers left their Nyambene Hills area settlement in Igembe-Tigania, in present-day Meru country in central-eastern Kenya, in search of new homes. By A.D. 1400, this community had split into distinct, but closely related, Thagicu-speaking groups occupying a region running from Meru, through Embu and Kirinyaga to Murang’a. These groups were – from north to south – the Tharaka, Cuka, Embu, Mbeere, Gicugu, Ndia, and the Agikuyu. Gikuyu national consciousness goes back to the early 1400s. In the next 400 years, the Agikuyu would expand into Nyeri, Kiambu and parts of Nyandarwa – to occupy the land between the Four Mountains, namely Kirinyaga (Mount Kenya), Kia-Nyandarwa (the Nyandarwa Range), Kia-Njahi (Kilimambogo), and Kia-Mbiruiru (Ngong Hills). The British settler-colonialists, as they penetrated the interior of Kenya in the late 19th century, encountered the Agikuyu building fortified villages on the outskirts of the area that would grow into Nairobi. on the southern frontier – and stopped Gikuyu expansion in its tracks. What followed was the brutal and tragic drama of a war of conquest and inevitable resistance. The resistance was suppressed. But within the ensuing half century, the Mau Mau war of liberation would break out, and the Agikuyu and their Thagicu (now GEMA) cousins would suffer ruthless suppression by the mighty British Empire. This is the story of the Agikuyu, from their beginnings, through their encounter with foreign white rule, their contribution to Kenya’s liberation, and their mixed fortunes since Kenya’s national independence – what with their remarkable contribution to nation-building and economic development, but also their tragic experiences, including attempts at ethnic cleansing targeting them, their GEMA brothers and sisters and other communities in the 1990s, and also, most painfully, in 2007-8. The story is set against the historical background of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, the Scramble for and Partition of Africa, the struggles for the self-determination of African nation-states, as well as nation building in a brutal Globalized ‘New World Order” under the control of the Imperialist Western powers, The author, Paul Ngige Njoroge, studied literature at Makerere and Nairobi Universities. He has worked as a teacher and a book-publishing editor.

Temporary People: A Novel by Deepak Unnikrishnah

Books, Fiction and Non Fiction, Anthology of Short Stories
KShs2,500.00
In the United Arab Emirates, foreign nationals constitute over 80 percent of the population. Brought in to construct the towering monuments to wealth that punctuate the skylines of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, this labor force works without the rights of citizenship, endures miserable living conditions, and is ultimately forced to leave the country. Until now, the humanitarian crisis of the so-called “guest workers” of the Gulf has barely been addressed in fiction. With his stunning, mind-altering debut novel Temporary People, Deepak Unnikrishnan delves into their histories, myths, struggles, and triumphs. Combining the irrepressible linguistic invention of Salman Rushdie and the satirical vision of George Saunders, Unnikrishnan presents twenty-eight linked stories that careen from construction workers who shapeshift into luggage and escape a labor camp, to a woman who stitches back together the bodies of those who’ve fallen from buildings in progress, to a man who grows ideal workers designed to live twelve years and then perish―until they don’t, and found a rebel community in the desert. With this polyphony, Unnikrishnan brilliantly maps a new, unruly global English. Giving substance and identity to the anonymous workers of the Gulf, he highlights the disturbing ways in which “progress” on a global scale is bound up with dehumanization.

Taariikhda Afka iyo Bulshada Soomaaliyeed: Daraasaad Af iyo Dhaqan (Somali Edition) by Cabdalla Cumar Mansuur

Books
KShs2,700.00 KShs2,500.00
Ulajeeddada buuggani ma aha keliya in aan wax laga qoro taariikhda Soomaaliyeed, maadaama ay jiraan aqoonyahanno badan oo tixgelin mudan ay buuggan hortiis isku taxallujiyeen taariikhda Soomaaliyeed, laakiin ulajeeddooyinka ugu weyni waa labo: in wax laga ifiyo taariikhdii hore ee Soomaaliyeed oo laga eegayo dhanka cilmi-afeedka iyo dhaqanka, iyo in si cilmiyeysan loo falanqeeyo habka ay u dhisanyihiin qabaa’ilka Soomaaliyeed iyo abtirsigooda, si loo muujiyo in ayna sax wada ahayn sida dhaqan ahaan loo arko nidaamka uu tolku u samaysanyahay. Sida aad u arki doontid, qabiil kasta oo ka tiirsan qabaa’ilka Soomaaliyeed wuxuu ka koobanyahay dad u dhashay iyo dad aan u dhalan oo isku milmay, kuwaasoo, si looga gudbo noloshii adkayd ee miyiga, dantu ku khasabtay inay isbahaystaan, gaar ahaan Soomaalida geela dhaqata haba ugu badnaatee. Waxaan ognahay in geelu uu yahay duunyada sida aadka ah looga jecelyahay Soomaalida dhexdeeda, maxaayeeley isagaa ugu nacfi iyo adkaysiba badan xoolaha, degaanka oomanaha ah. Taasina waxay keentay in layska dhaco, laguna dagaallamo. Sidaa darteed lagama maarmaan ayay ahayd, inta aan dawlad la helin, in qofku ku tiirsanaado tol, ha u dhasho tolkaas ama ha sheegto, si naftiisa iyo xoolihiisu ay u badbaadaan. Oraahdan caanka ah ayaan ka dheehan karnaa arrintaas “Ama buur ahaw ama buur ku tiirsanow” (yacnii, haddaadan cudud lahayn qabiil xoog leh ku tiirsanow). Qoraaga oo soo bandhigayaa cilmibaaris uu waqti badan u huray, oo ka jawaabeysa su’aalo Soomaali badan maankooda ku wareegaaya, wuxuu qoraalkiisa si cilmiyaysan ku salalaynayaa qaybaha dhaqanka Soomaalida: afka iyo lahjadihiisa, maansada, sheekooyinka hiddaha, maahmaahda, abtirsiga, iwm.
