In 1977, Wanjiku Kironyo wrote a letter to her unborn child, intending to welcome him and share where he came from. That letter became the start of a decades-long journey uncovering the hidden truths of colonial Kenya and its lasting impact. Through memories, conversations with elders, and reflections on race and identity abroad, Wanjiku reconstructs a history often denied or distorted. Part memoir, part testimony, What Happened to Us? is a powerful exploration of colonial wounds, resilience, and self-discovery—a call to reclaim dignity, confront the past, and embrace the strength and humanity that have always been ours.
